Such an interesting difference here between all the Martial Art Tubers (Love all you guys so much! These are the Avengers Assemble videos I LOVE. Just missing wonderboy ;) ) Seth's explanation is a guy who lights martial arts and like going to the dojo buffet. Taking bits from here and there, like watching all the styles made into a smoothie. Watching Mike is very much watching his years of experience in fights, not matches, but fights. No rules, no style points, no off limits, just two or more guys going at it. All real, no bells and whistles, just max damage and max protection. It ain't pretty but it would suck to be on the other end of. Watching Jessie is like a textbook and an encyclopedia rolled into one. The technique, the nuance, the information. Amazing. Keep the good times rolling Kevin!

All of the kicks Mike shows in this video, down to the crescent headkick and the push-away sidekick is completely in-line with what my dad showed me, and what has worked in my experience. He retired from SpetzNaz after the fall of the USSR, and opened a school for diplomatic body guards in Latvia. He had the 'Master of Sport' rank in Sambo, and a lot of practical hand-to-face combat experience. On the other hand, Sensei Seth put out a video on street fight kicks last year, and it is hilarious bullshido. Thank you, Mike.

Kevin is the "Everything But Karate Nerd" 😂 Question, though: Savate practitioners would have any kind of "advantage" on a street fight since they are already used to wear shoes for kicking? I've seen on another channel that wearing shoes can change the mechanics of a kick more than we, the average people, would think of.
@jonharker9028
@jonharker9028 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, shoes definitely change the way a kick feels, but it also dépends on the type of shoe. If I have minimalist shoes like Jesse Enkamp likes to wear, they have so little presence that it’s basically the same as a regular barefooted kick. Conversely, yeah a pair of combat boots or sturdy hiking boots make the foot more like a solid club, and wood-soled dress shoes or cowboy boots or the like are also pretty stiff. A running shoe can be pretty light, with a spongy toe box, but with the thick shock-absorbing sole you can count on the whole bottom of the foot or just the heel to deal plenty of damage without hurting you too much. Take care, and kick safely!
@danielfang749
@danielfang749 11 месяцев назад
Usually during my trainings we are barefoot, but sometimes we have to train sweeps that are too hard to do in the mat and wear our shoes on normal floor, gravel, dirt, etc. It does changes how the kick feels, you definetly can feel the weight and the momentum. Tbh, you should always train a bit with you day to day footwearing to see how much that changes and how your shoes react too when you fight. Always fun to try kicks on a slippery floor xD
@ambulocetusnatans
@ambulocetusnatans 11 месяцев назад
@@danielfang749 Totally agree. I like Japanese styles but they always *always* train barefoot. One time I had a Karate friend and we were outside, and I said let's do some training, and he said ok wait a minute and I'll go put on my uniform. I'm like what, you don't need that, just do it.

The thing I've noticed about each style is the difference between speed / timing, damage versus placement, and efficiency/ effectiveness. Some of the words are similar but slightly different. Speed is more efficient for more attacks but less effective and lower damage. Street fighters are best ended as quickly as possible.

@ambulocetusnatans
@ambulocetusnatans 11 месяцев назад
Why are you getting in street fights? I've noticed that many teachers and students think that self defense and street fighting are the same thing. The Law sure doesn't think so. A self defense situation is when you get attacked. You don't want to get attacked, and you are not agreeing to be attacked. But a street fight means that both of you are agreeing to fight, it is a mutual decision to fight. Self defense is about getting home safely. Street fighting is risking not getting home at all.
@kevinmurphy5878

@@ambulocetusnatanswhen martial arts guys are saying street fight they usually mean ANY fight that is not a sanctioned sport fight or a martial arts match. Missed the perfect opportunity to mention how savate uses the reinforced toes to "bypass" blocks. A pointed toe into the side of the neck around a strong block is not only devastating but utterly demoralizing, even more so to fighters who are used to blocking big head kicks. Scraping along the shin using the hardened shoe as well as snapping into ribs around body blocks all have that "what the hell is this guy capable of?" Demoralizing factor that is even more important in the street, where simply not attacking the guy anymore is a win condition in and of itself. Excellent and informative video! Especially interesting to hear about JKD "Savate up front, muay Thai in back" leg philosophy.

I like to land with the foot for leg kicks because you maximize length. Never worried before about someone checking moving backwards so usually a check shortens the range enough that the check lands on the shin. Leg kick with shin if you want to punch or aren't worried about being punched, land with foot if you don't want to punch or be punched

@kevinmurphy5878 11 месяцев назад
Just my two cents, but you might want to take a legend's advice with a grain of salt, more than a really good amateur or a middle of the road pro, if you're starting out. The first thing that comes to mind is strikers like Ali, McGregor, Shannon Briggs, Alex Pereira, who wing punches from the hip and get a power and unpredictability boost out of it because they have good enough range control to do it. Somebody who doesn't have years of experience would not want to model their style after guys like that. Leg kicking with the foot could be like that. Or am I missing the point? Are you just talking about head kicks

In a Street Fight, be dirty as you want. Be alive at the end of the day. When i was a kid, the best kick you can do in a street fight is a Front Kick.. I got in a fight when i was 9 and like 2 teens (one dude and one stud lesbian) are trying to jump me.. Now, me a Green belter in Kyokushin Karate, used what i know and front kick really worked then elbows and eye gouge for sure when he hit the ground after that front kick (I grew up with a lot of Martial Art films and UFC, Pride, K-1 so i really used what i know).. I didn't really care about the other teen punching me while i pounded his boy in the ground cause i sorta blacked out and i didn't feel anything at that point.

I'm not a big fan of the crescent kick. I have two favorite kicks for self-defense/street fighting... 1) The rear leg push kick to the gut. Its a rear teep in Muay Thai. In Greek pankration its called the gastrizein, etc. Every art has it. Great for making space. Great for knockdowns.Great for kicking armored combatants. Works both as an interception or a finisher. 2) Oblique kick to the knee. Works from any range. I especially like it from clinch so its actually more like stomping down on the knee as much as its a kick. Also works nice as an interception. Definitely big in Wing Chun.

This is not the way to use kicking practically or safely in a fight. Having studied and practiced with people that were forced to use violence regularly due to their profession I can’t assure you, pay attention to your Wing Chun teacher, and if you study it, the kicking taught by your fma teacher. Learn stomps and knee knocks. A kick is a large lever that exposes your ankle, knee, groin, and hip to destruction. I have twenty years of training in boxing, kick boxing and grappling, I don’t confuse them for combatives.

Yeah you DEFINITELY wanna use your shin against someone's leg LOL I was sparring with my friend once and we were both having a good time, wasn't too crazy or too soft, so I put a little extra heat on one of my kicks and I broke my foot over her thigh LOL beginner mistake

This is misinformation regarding the rear leg “mimicking” Muay Thai in Bruce Lee’s JKD. Bruce Lee wasn’t fond of Muay Thai. You can google his notes on what he thought about it. He thought it was overly telegraphic for one. He didn’t adopt anything from Muay Thai. Savate though, he did experiment with it. But again, JKD is its own thing. It’s not a blend of different “arts” You can’t stick everything on a pizza and hope it’s going to taste good. Likewise, you can’t mix a bunch of different arts that are structurally different, with different body mechanics and footwork and hope by some miracle you can blend it all together when the shit hits the fan and somehow apply it. Mixing things sounds good. But when it comes down to practicality and being able to effectively use something to defend yourself it’s not all that functional.

Bruce Lee loved Savate, but he took nothing from Muay Thai. His kicks are a combination of savate and taekwondo.
