@@JooWorks I'm exporting in 4k, I heard there are 2 codecs RU-vid uses. People recommend uploading DNxHR instead of h264. Maybe that truck works.
@diman4010
@diman4010 4 года назад
@@CineDecodificado yes, YT uses h264 (up to 1080) and VP9 (for every resolution). You can use youtube-dl tool (just google for it) to download and compare 1080 stream quality for both codecs. You might be surprised, but the newer codec VP9 has the worst quality just because it's bitrate is 2 times lower than h.264's. This is why banding is so visible now on yt... It wasn't such an issue back then, when VP9 wasn't a default codec for 1080. Sort of solution that might work sometimes: film grain, noise or some sort of dithering. It can help to reduce banding in 4k, but usually things in 1080 are going to be worse: macro blocks are everywhere. I really wish youtube team tune up codecs much better, but they are busy with making robots for tech support.
@JimRobinson-colors
@JimRobinson-colors 4 года назад
@@diman4010 RU-vid makes a copy of your video as it transcodes to those codecs - so the one you upload has little to do with the process - it just has to be a codec that it can read to transcode. It is usually a good idea to throw more bits than they ask for too. They will compress at their maximum but they won't increase the bit-rate if you are lower than their maximum - so why leave bits on the table. The 4k thing is that they allow a higher bit-rate to it - so the idea is that if you upload a 4k and people watch it in 1080HD it will look better than it would if you just uploaded it to 1080p - but if your footage is not really 4k and you are doing this to fool the system - you rub the risk of someone watching an upscaled video in 4k that really should be 1080p

well, I have bought that LUT converter, therefore it doesn't want to convert 27*27px picture, saying "your jpg/png must have the exact smae size as the original one (125x125px or 512x512px)". Not sure what original file it is saying about. So I exported 125x125px from photoshop. It created .cube file out of it and after I apply it as a LUT, it make a mess. Seems more like colorama effect in AE. So that was waste of time... or wasn't?

The LUT generation instructions are out-of-date. The software now requires the image to be 125x125 or 512x512 px. The reference video should be updated with the updated 125x125 reference image. Was able to use your LUT though. Thanks!

@JimRobinson-colors

There is a standard, it's called bt1886 - which all displays and online services read. Rec 709 Gamma 2.2 for video is interchangeable with sRGB - sRGB is still used by some because it is backward compatible with CRT monitors - but the standard expecting colorspace is bt1886 - So you should grade in 2.4 and then place a CST on the timeline and shift the gamma from 2.4 to 2.2 ... render the timeline out, DaVinci Resolve will tag that render as 2.4 - This process will look different than rec709 gamma 2.4 and also slightly different than just outputting rec709 -2.2 or sRGB. I can send you a list if colorists that use this standard and links to all the data for it if you wish. I appreciate your unique look and approach to ideas - but i feel that this particular video is filled with misinformation.

I get it's a lookup table but is there a way to over-compensate for the exact effect that youtube does so when my browser plays it it'll look close to the actual video itself?
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 2 года назад
Well technically the actual video colors look as they look in the browser. It's just your uncolormanaged editing software that make them look too saturated, because the file's colorspace and your displays default colorspace don't match. So a better workflow is to color manage your editor or get your self a rec709/sRGB -display.
@Clarity520
@Clarity520 2 года назад
@@JooWorks Thank you for the reply I really appreciate it. I think I kinda get what you mean but I don't think the actual video is supposed to look like that? So my situation here is I recorded some gameplay using OBS. After rendering it in Pr, I'm pretty confident the result looks very very close to the actual gameplay. However when I uploaded it to youtube I could clearly see the difference between my rendered video and the one playing in the browser. It's so much more colorful when I play the rendered video in VLC. I've seen some solutions online that suggest to over-saturate the video so when youtube plays it in the browser it will look somewhat closer to the original. Basically 1+1-1=1 Maybe I fundamentally misunderstood how colors work which is very likely the case since I'm new to video editing, but is it possible to figure out how less-saturated the footage is in the broswer, then apply a layer of over-saturation with the same ratio in Pr to eventually achieve a fairly color-accurate end result when viewed in broswer?
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 2 года назад
@@Clarity520 Aa. Well now I get it, your game is actually DCI-P3 colorspace. When you upload it to youtube vs "normal" the video file has rec709 metadata on it and then the browser shows the file as rec709 aka. Muting down the colors. (by the way you should not see this happening on firefox.) I'm not sure if it's possible to give you video file dci-p3 metadata and would chrome even care about it. I did some testing some time ago and I think dci-p3 metadata does not change the color management on chrome. (can't be sure though, it was some time ago). If you convert your footage from rec709 to dci-p3 you should in theory end up having just the rigth amount of extra saturation to conpensate for the conversion that happens in the browser. You can create a lut like that on lutcal website or send me a message here: joo.works/contact-me and I can send you one.

I appreciate your video, but I use FCPX and haven't noticed a big color shift after uploading to RU-vid. What I do notice and hate very much is the difference in LUMINANCE between Safari and FireFox and Chrome. What I see in FCPX matches what I see on RU-vid when using Safari (in terms of luminance). But when I view that same RU-vid video in FireFox or Chrome, everything is darker. It bugs the heck out of me because to make my videos brighter to look right on FireFox and Chrome makes it a tad too bright in Safari. Safari is the default browser for all Macs and the default for Apple mobile devices too, so we should not treat it flippantly (even though Apple stupidly blocks viewing of 4K RU-vid content in Safari, which I hate). I'd therefore love to see a new Joo.Works video that addresses these luminance differences, and touches on FCPX too, for those of us who prefer FCPX over Resolve and Premier Pro. Thank you.
@JooWorks

You can create a LUT to monitor the footage in different browsers the same way even when it's only about luminance.

@JDW I’m curious… how are you getting your video to RU-vid from FCPX? Sharing directly to RU-vid from FCP, sending to Compressor and using a default RU-vid export, or using a custom export out of Compressor, or exporting a ProRes from FCP and encoding that somewhere, or ? Please let me know… I’m trying to get to the bottom of this issue. Feel free to DM me on twitter (same name) if you don’t want to clutter up Joo’s comment feed.

@PhotoJoseph I don’t think Joo will mind if I reply to you here. I upload directly to RU-vid from within FCPX. My GH5 footage is 10-bit 4K HLG, placed on a Rec.709 timeline in FCPX with Color Space Override set to Rec.2020. And as I said before, the luminance level I see in FCPX matches very closely what I see in Safari when I later view my uploaded video on RU-vid; however, viewing the same RU-vid video in Firefox and Chrome is a bit darker overall.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 4 года назад
JDW Interesting that you’re using the default export and seeing the shift. In my tests, exporting to RU-vid from FCP directly is fine. However I’m also not using HLG, so that’s another interesting clue. God I’d love to figure this out.

2:58 That chart is incredibly wrong mate. Firefox is second after Chrome, and it was first before Chrome became so popular with Google forcing it on every Android user and promoting it to every Google search user. Firefox is also the only big browser that is focused on privacy and an open-source ecosystem (be it software or behaviour related). Chrome is also open-source, but it doesn't really behave in such a way considering all the tracking and logging. If you care about privacy and security, get Firefox with HTTPS Everywhere, uBlock Origin and DuckDuckGo. Firefox is also the fastest big browser, and since the last updates consumes as much RAM as Chrome, if not less...
