The acoustics in that empty stadium, along with the special quality of air and sound when it is extremely cold (it was -20° below zero that day) must have been absolutely incredible for them to experience. I've watched this trip into outer space probably a hundred times. It's a different view of the universe in my mind each time, but they always bring me safely back to Earth. ❤🌹❤ RIP Keith and Greg God Bless you, Carl ❤

"Fanfare For The Common Man" is one of my favorite songs by EL&P. Love this live version at Olympic Stadium, Montreal in 1977. It shows them rehearsing in an empty stadium in the cold winter. Loved their use of the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer & piano. They are considered a progressive rock band. They had a unique sound that included classical music with jazz & symphonic rock elements. Their sound is like no other band. Sadly both Keith Emerson & Greg Lake died in 2016, leaving only Carl Palmer.

That was actually a studio audio recording they were performing to in sync with the music, the same as found on their album "Works". There was only one cameraman, so they had to perform the song 4 times with the camera concentrating on one performer each time for the first three recordings and then the 4th with all four in camera view. Then it was all edited together.

Carl is still going strong... I saw him and his band last month on the technology-enhanced "Return of Emerson, Lake & Palmer" tour using the separately-recorded keyboard, bass, and vocal tracks from a 1990's ELP Albert Hall gig, having Keith and Greg on video for about half the songs. It was actually far better than I expected! From the opening "Karn Evil 9 (1st Imp, Part 2) which transitioned from recorded Keith/Greg to live CP Band, through the completely live "Tarkus" and "Benny the Bouncer" featuring Carl singing (REALLY!!!) and intermission of a recorded "Creole Dance" by Keith, to the combined recorded and live "Fanfare/America/Rondo" finale, it was very well done.

Yup, Montréal is often cold, but ELP put some serious fire into the olympic stadium. "Mon pays, ce n'est pas un pays, c'est l'hiver" - Gille Vigneault (My country isn't a country, it's winter)

Keith Emerson-Keyboards, Greg Lake-Bass and Vocals, when they have them and Carl Palmer-Drums. This was recorded at an empty Montreal Olympic Stadium, a little over a year after the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. I saw a couple of games between the Montreal Expos and San Francisco Giants there in 1980. Saw ELP live in 1993. They blew out the power in the venue three times before they finished the show. AWESOME!!!

Yes it was cold - Montreal in winter and 20° below zero! One of the great prog bands, along with Yes and King Crimson - three bands with occasionally overlapping line-ups and an astonishing sound. This is a classical piece by American composer Aaron Copeland, but I think even Copeland himself admitted that this was an impressive version. Time to try their epic "Tarkus" suite.

Biz , "Take A Pebble" may appeal to a more lush and sonically softer side . Their Landmark Albums: Brain Salad Surgery & Tarkus = undeniable brilliance. Their First album "Emerson Lake & Palmer" contains several noteworthy contributions to next level virtuosity as well .

Part of an interview with Greg Lake: LAKE: I remember we were rehearsing in a basement beneath the Olympic stadium. It was the only place large enough to fit the whole orchestra in to rehearse. A phone call came in and I had to go up and take it, and everyone took a coffee break. So during that break I took the elevator up to the ground floor, which actually took me to the Olympic stadium. And I went up to the stadium and I was looking at this absolutely mind-blowing site, covered in virgin snow, with the Olympic rings lit up in neon lights at both ends. It was an eerie sight, begging for something to happen, and I thought, ‘Video.’ We got the crew to move the gear up to the stadium the next day to start recording. Of course, what we didn’t plan was for it to be way below zero. My fingers would literally slip through the strings. So we had to record it in fairly short bursts, but it was a lovely film in the end.

Took something old and made it something beautifully new. Such fond memories of this on the radio, and it charting well, when I was a schoolboy in England. Another Brit 70's band with lots on Medieval influences - Gentle Giant. Many say has YES sounds, but can get super-abstract! You can hear guitars and keys, but then they'll all play a Recorder (wood flute) quintet, the bassist plays trumpet and violin and acoustic guitar (great for guitar duets), the Key player plays cello and vibraphone (xylophone) which the drummer also plays. Really trippy. There are just a few vids on RU-vid.

Love this rocked up cover of the Aaron Copland classic. ELP was a very special band of talented musicians.Keith Emerson's early band "the Nice" was originally the backing band for PP Arnold or before breaking off on their own. Greg Lake, of course was in the fabulous early prog band King Crimson before ELP, and Carl Palmer was a respected drummer for several bands. Sadly both Greg and Keith died in 2016 leaving Carl the only remainig member who is still performing.

Longtime subscriber here. Thanks for this one Biz. I know you’ve done a few from ELP already. Helping to usher in the real progressive rock movement of the early 70’s, Keith Emerson was a force of nature. His experiments and creativity with Moog along with Classical composition reworks were mind blowing. He, and his friend and colleague from Yes, Rick Wakeman (formally trained at The Royal Academy, London) have bodies of work like no others. ELP Live with a 60 plus piece Orchestra was a remarkable musical experience. His iconic self built Synth System was given to a young blind female artist and friend of Keith’s prior to his passing. Her name, Rachel Flowers. I invite everyone to check her out.

There is a video of Greg Lake, who was playing bass here, doing a solo version of their hit "Lucky Man", with him singing and playing an acoustic guitar. His voice is wonderful and he is chewing gum while singing and playing intricate melodies on guitar. The only other musician that I saw doing that was Jimi Hendrix. Worth a look.

For a long time, this was very popular backing music to put underneath sports highlights on television. I'm sure it's still sometimes used today...I always thought it was kinda funny that until Metallica and G 'N R, the most popular music for stadium sports in America was usually by British bands...When Keith goes into the keyboard solos, that bass tone is fat...It's not easy to lay down a consistent groove like that while the synthesizer is flying all over the place...It would have been a blast to watch them in that empty stadium while they were videoing this...Keith was cool as fuck, man...It was neat to see somebody get it and appreciate it...Some people are thrown by the lack of vocals...

"Fanfare for the Common Man", a cover of Aaron Copland's same-titled orchestral work and released as a single (reaching #2 in the "summer of punk"), remains the 3rd highest selling instrumental track ever. ELP were giants in the field of progressive rock, garnering global recognition because of their emphasis on complex compositions, stunning live performances, and technological innovation. For instance, when the album Tarkus (1971) was released, the title track was a 20-minute, multi-movement concept piece that epitomized compositional dexterity. As well, the album Brain Salad Surgery (1973) featured “Karn Evil 9,” a 30-minute track broken up into three different impressions. As proof of its lasting impact, this prog-rock classic will serve as the inspiration for an upcoming sci-fi film. But the power of ELP’s compositions elevated during live performances. In 1977 during the Works tour, the band was augmented by a 70-piece orchestra and choir. Playing in front of nearly 80,000 fans at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, ELP showcased songs like Pirates, which takes the listener on a musical adventure on the high seas. Pictures of an Exhibition and Fanfare for the Common Man were perfect examples of how ELP fused classical and rock music to near perfection. From 1970-1977, ELP changed the musical landscape by breaking all the rules. In the golden era of progressive rock, the group was the ultimate musical expression. There were simply no limits to their creativity. - Excerpts from Ottawa Life Magazine

This Copeland classic has been redone by many, many people. I first heard this version when the album came out. One of my dorm mates bought the recording the moment it was available. We played it often. My favorite version however will always be the one performed by a jazz legend in his 60s, Woody Herman, and his "Thundering Herd" in 1976. I was privileged to see Woody perform several times in his later years and it was always a clinic to see how he led and molded his band. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fAFC1cIszTc.html

No, it wasn't a set-up and sound check. The only reason they were at the Olympic Stadium to begin with was because, in a very large room below, it was the only place large enough for the guys and the orchestra to practice in. Fanfare For the Common Man was written by Aaron Copeland in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under conductor Eugene Goossens and was inspired in part by a speech made earlier that year by then U.S. VP Henry Wallace, in which Wallace proclaimed the dawning of the "Century of the Common Man". 🖥 Info gleaned from Google.
