A tough start, but when promoting the debut album, Keith Emerson put on an extravagant performance, one of the first to make full use of the Moog synthesizer and want to attract attention. For me, he was the most innovative keboarder at the time, along with Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman. Maybe it would have been better to choose a studio recording like TAKE A PEBBLE or KNIFE-EDGE as the first masterpiece from the debut. There would also be extravagant TV live performances for both songs, e.g. entering the title and adding Beat Club (then German Kult broadcast). ELP covers a wide musical spectrum such as the ballad Lucky Man to the later "Piano Concerto" from Work, but also its own brilliant version of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition. It would be great if you went a little chronologically.

I totally love it when I see and hear these bands from back in the early days - the days when rock music was gaining the ground it needed to set the bar for other wannabe rock bands. ELP lives in my memories as one of these bands...they were 'pushing the envelope' of rock music, and (like many others, for example King Crimson) won many hearts and minds over to the genre. Great selection, great band! Thank You for helping bring these early masterpieces and great bands back into the limelight.

Not all ELP songs are like this one. TRILOGY is their best album. GREG LAKE has a fantastic voice. Please do more of ELP if you can. Especially LUCKY MAN, you will definitely like that one.

I, personally, prefer Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery. For me ttheir 2 best albums. Try a quiet song like Lucky Man to start with ELP.

"Take A Pebble" may appeal to a more lush and sonically softer side . Their Landmark Albums: Brain Salad Surgery & Tarkus = undeniable brilliance. Their First album "Emerson Lake & Palmer" contains several noteworthy contributions to next level virtuosity as well .

King Crimson was the Prog Rock Fathers! Greg Lake, the bassist was the first King Crimson singer ..on 1969, this WAS the "Steven Wilson music from the 70s" 😅

ELP have beautiful ballads, crazy wild prog rock songs and everything in between. Origins of prog rock is mid to late sixties. That Moody Blues song you heard "Tuesday Afternoon" is off of one of the first prog albums.

In my experience, ELP's music was labeled as Classical Rock (not to be confused with classic rock) before it was called Prog Rock.

I came here from your "Epitaph" reaction. I was so curious what you had listened to that got a negative reaction. I agree with other commenters that this is not a good place to start with them. It throws you in the deep end. You need to ease yourself into them. Most people heard "Lucky Man" on the radio and bought their first album thinking they would hear similar music. The first album was a brave collection of classical adaptations and what some consider to be the first heavy metal rock. This band is incredibly versatile and unpredictable, but they're my absolute favorites. Brilliant, creative musicians.

This wasn't really the place to start on your prog rock journey and certainly not on you ELP journey. This is PURE theatrics and gives you absolutely no idea of how good a keyboard player Keith Emerson was and how godd a guitarist and bass guitarist Greg Lake was. You were impressed with Carl Palmer and his abbility on the drums... well ALL three of them were that good in each part of the group.. and that is why they were so huge. Try "Take A Pebble" next from them. It is much better from a beginner point of view.

Rondo first appeared on Keith Emerson's previous band The Nice album 'The thoughts of Emerlist Davjack' (a mishmash of the four group members surnames) in 1968 although it was probably based on a Dave Brubeck composition. It re-appeared on a live album in 1969. The band split up in 1970 when Keith Emerson formed Emerson, Lake and Palmer consisting of Keith Emerson (keyboards) Greg Lake of King Crimson (vocals, bass, guitar, producer) and Carl Palmer of Atomic Rooster (drums, percussion). This was their first live performance.

Hi just subscribed and watched your reaction to ELP, totally understand why alot of people don't like or understand this music, I found them in the early 70s, was for me the first band I really got into, had every album they made, had the pleasure of seeing them a couple of times in my local venue in Bristol England, totally amazing if your a fan,prog rock was generally a English thing, there were only probably 3 major bands about, ELP, Pink Floyd and Yes,the 3 ELP members were all classically trained, did you notice the drummer Carl Palmer, he had the left hand drum stick held in the way of a forces drummer would hold it, and the other as a ordinary drummer would hold it, he could when doing a solo on just the snare drum be so fast that it sounded like just one continuous note or beat,along with John Bonham of Led Zeppelin arguably the greatest drummer ever, sadly Keith Emerson the keyboard player shot himself in the US recently because as his girlfriend says he could nolonger play keyboards because his hands and arms nolonger worked right, and he couldn't face life not playing, how sad is that, anyway you both take care keep up the great work English Billy.

Emerson was trying to “bend” notes which up to that point was impossible. The knife and the jumping on the keyboard was to create feedback to get unheard of sounds out of the organ. You see him turning off and on the organ to get the desired bend in the note.

I saw ELP live in 1971 and many times there after. They have been 1 of my top favorite bands For the last 52 years. All due respect To comment Asking why he is angry did somebody spill his beer his ridiculous. I'm guessing you were not watching live shows of Rock bands In the 70s.

I would highly recommend "Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Pt. 2" from ELP. It's wild like this, but also has singing, which brings some focus I think would help you enjoy it more.

In this period, EL&P were quite extravagant in their performances and in addition to the songs they played, there was a considerable period where they improvised. For example, Emerson would start doing something on his keyboards and Lake and Palmer would continue improvising on their respective instruments, of In fact, according to Lake's autobiography, they did not previously know exactly how long the presentation would last because of the improvisations. Aside from the above, for me the band showed their cutting-edge musicianship in their recordings. Emerson, Lake and Palmer were probably the first supergroup, a term initially used by a journalist to refer to the band members having stood out in other bands with some recognition.

This song truly doesn’t represent their collection. It’s actually a carry over from the Nice when Keith was with them. Please try “ From the Beginning to start getting a feel from them. Then maybe Hoedown, Jerusalem, Live version of Pirates from Montreal Works tour. You will see the depth of them.

This song, Rondo, was not on ELPs first album. It was a song Emerson recorded with The Nice, but was a staple at all ELP shows

Rondo wasn't in the ELP first album that I bought in 1970 or in any of the other albums that I can recall. It was a song he played with the Nice I believe. This was their first performance as a group and is before their first album was actually released. To clarify, Keith did similar antics at every show I ever saw them at, so it wasn't a one time thing. The crowd would go WILD!!!

Sounded like a practice session, like "orientation". "Here guys, go beat on these instruments until you get the hang of them." Lots better ELP tunes to break someone in on. From the Beginning pops into my mind, for one.

Prog rock does not only have theatrical elements, there are many musical styles that are mixed, harmonized and processed, jazz, classical, folk, blues, metal, country and many more.

I saw them in America in 1970, in a college auditorium, after the release of first album The Barbarian being a great introduction. I had heard The Nice but ELP were a step above. Merchant of Alba, this is only a small portion of their work, If you continue you will be won over, but excess was their trump card. Fusing Rock, Classical, Jazz, Rock n'Roll together was the where they staked their claim. Keep exploring with new bands, I enjoy your journey, many of the bands you cover I've seen as I am in my seventies and grew up in NJ near NYC.

Before you put Keith in a box, I would suggest. for beautiful piano .. The Three Fates - Emerson, Lake & Palmer [2012 Remaster]..... Keith Emerson .. What genres do you want? He was considered the greatest keyboard Player of all time in many polls in the 70's but according to his obituary in Keyboard Magazine he was #1 for all 40 years from when they 1st launched in 1975. Classically trained he wrote is own piano concerto for orchestra... Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9 1st impression, part 2.(Cal Jam,1974) Remastered by RudenkoArt...Benny The Bouncer... for rag time... Jeruselum ... for a church hymn....

Well, not the best video to start with EL&P (I'm going to see a tribute band this evening). There a great video of Aron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man recorded in a desert Montreal stadium full of snow before the 1976 olympics. The studio stuff is very different. On Works, there's a symphonic piece written by Emerson and Trilogy is a great album that doesn't contain much of what you have called "crazyness". Last suggestion: check youtube for Rachel Flower's videos. She plays Emerson (not only) and is a very amazing multi-instrumentist.

ELP One of best UK prog rock band. Three element Keith Emerson (died) fenomenal piano -Hammond , greg Lake voice ,guitar, Bass (died) and Carl Palmer (live) best prog drum.

Prog rock was all about pushing the limits and mixing every genre you could think of, On keyboards Keth Emerson who would often in other tracks put his own take on classical or jazz tracks but also a composer of classical and jazz himself. he could also play pieces of Bach or Beethoven lying on top of a grand piano backwards. you may not have liked this one but ELP produced many like this but also many tracks that you might like better based around folk Jazz or classical. of course, my youth Pink Floyd, ELP, YES, Genesis, King Crimson, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind, Led Zeplin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple among others. Maybe try Lucky Man or Take a Pebble or FanFair for a common man from ELP.

This song was not an ELP song. It was recorded by Emerson's previous band - The Nice. It was a cover of Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk. For a better example of ELP react to the title track from Trilogy. Critics of Prog rock back then acknowledged the musical prowess of the bands but criticized some of their work as pretentious, self indulgent or just showing off. Palmer's solo here was reprised on the ELP track Tank from their debut album.

I love Emerson Lake & Palmer, but honestly this was not their best song or best performance. Being the first progressive rock supergroup, there songs covered and incorporated a wide range of genres, from rock, to jazz, to classical, to love/folk. For a completely different performance and song, I suggest the song Pirates, Live in Montreal, 1977, done with orchestral backup.

This was an attempt at Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a la Turk", only thing is...the 9/8 was not in Carl's toolkit. Since it is the 9/8 that makes the song a classic, they missed the boat on this one. Carl has speed, but not a lot of math. Bruford had more math. He could have pulled it off. Alas, Carl was only a kid at the time.

More prog rock bands, please. (I have asked for Genesis.....you will like them) By the way, Genesis is not like this at all. Dramatic, but more in a serious way, more like opera (which is why they were so loved in Italy. Genesis plays together in amazing ways. 'Firth of Fifth' you love. You will also like 'Ripples'. 'Mad Man Moon' is interesting and a lovely composition. EL&P loved to do big, colossal solos for their own sake. For me it is tedious. I prefer good MUSIC not this type of entertainment. That being said I saw them live once and their concert was incredible.

EL&P tended towards the 'show-off', over-the-top, entertainment side of prog. This 'Rondo' is an interpretation of the classic rondo by Mussorgsky. They could be self-indulgent to a fault. However, their interpretation of some of the other classics are very good. Give them another chance. Too much 'energy'. True.

It is unfortunate to start out with live versions. Always start with studio music "as written" before you delve into their creativity in front of an audience! This goes for most bands...

I understand that reaction videos are thoughts about a piece of music that one has never heard of, but to have such strong opinions about what clearly was considered incredible entertainment both then and now, is disturbing. So, I ask, what is worse, a guy who entertained millions for money or two people who offer up uneducated opinions and ridiculous comments about a band and an era of music for which they are woefully ignorant, just to make money? Also, I guess you think that Jimi Hendrix was angry when he lit his guitar on fire.

Il tanto lodato John Bonham era molto potente e molto rozzo niente a che vedere con la maestria e l' eccellente uso del rullante e dei piatti di Carl Palmer.
