Well, the channel hit a million subs. So we’re putting together some special episodes for the occasion. I am going to share some personal episodes and interviews over the next month. So I’ve done nearly 700 interviews since I started Professor of Rock and whenever I bump into someone who watches the channel I get the same question time and again. What is my favorite interview? Well, It’s ACTUALLY a very easy answer. I’ve shared hundreds of origin stories that have come out of the interviews I’ve done and I’ve shared some of my story over the last several years, but today I’m going to give you my origin story… I’m going to take you back to the 80s when I grew up…
For anyone who has seen even a handful of episodes, you know that my Dad was the one who raised me on rock and roll… Well, a few years before he passed away I had the chance to take a camera crew out to the small town in Idaho where I grew up and I got to interview my dad. I also interviewed my wife, my friends, and my grandpa, who’s also passed away. Today I share my origin story of how I started Professor of Rock and I take you back to Blackfoot Idaho where it all started.. I also have some artists and bands in this episode as well. Thank you Adam - This episode in particular was bittersweet for me as my Dad was very similar in sharing his passion for music with me. After months of illness as he lay unconscious and near death in a California hospital I flew home from Australia where I now live and I brought a CD player into his room with a playlist of his favourite artists which I had made just for his passing - it included Paul Simon, Miles Davis, Van Morrison, The Who, Yes, the Beatles, Dave Brubeck and many other rock and jazz artists. As I sat by his side listening to music with him, though he was unconscious, he reached for my hand and squeezed it just before he passed. My Dad had amazing taste in music but he was not a hugger or toucher, that was the first time my Dad held my hand since I was a child. I was the only family that visited him in the hospital as he lay dying and it had a profound effect on me to witness his passing while the soundtrack of our lives played loud in that quiet Montery hospital. It was one of the hardest but most meaningful nights of my life, so thankful I experienced it. Thanks Adam for reminding me of the bond music can create in life and even in death.

I love this interview! My only criticism is: IT'S TOO SHORT!!!!! Learning more about you, hearing the people who love you speak of you, it brings tears. You DO have an incredible gift, an incredible memory and a beautiful way of bringing out the person behind the fame. You are so very real, Adam, so very open and respectful. Yeah, this needs to be longer. We need part 2.

I hate it when teachers say stupid stuff like, "you can't do it" because often, as in your case, they are dead wrong. Congratulations on winning the gold medal for career development in your graduating class by following your passion and getting good enough to allow you to make a living at it. True story: my mom started her college career at UC Berkeley as an English major. after being in an English class for a little while her professor said you are not college material. she transferred to San Francisco State changed her major to pre-nursing period. Transferred back to UC Berkeley and worked for her RN. I wish she had gone back to that teacher who told her she was not college material and waived her diploma in her face, but my mother wasn’t that kind of person.

@@ProfessorofRock I'm so happy for you! Congratulations!!! My parents were quite a bit older than yours although you and I are somewhat close in age. (I'm one of the youngest kids in a large family.) I enjoy your nostalgic stories, as I can really relate! Anyhow, when I was in college, I was given two free tickets to one of Frank Sinatra's last concerts in SLC. Of course I gave those tickets to my parents. Up to that point in my life, I hadn't had a chance to do something REALLY nice for may parents. I know they enjoyed the show. I don't think they ever expected to see him perform live. I have no regrets.

I was born in Pocatello, Idaho and have family from Blackfoot! When I watch your videos I feel that there is another person on the planet who is just as obsessed with music and the back stories as me! ❤ My hope is that we can inspire the next generation, alpha to keep this great music alive! My two youngest boys are such fans of music like their Momma, with my 10 year old dreaming of seeing and meeting Jeff Lynn from ELO in his lifetime. If that teacher of yours who shamed your passion and talent for music facts and stats is still alive, I hope someone shows him this episode! I was much like you as a kid. My parents were of the Big Band/Swing era, although my father also listened to country music as we worked around our property out in the remote desert in the 1970s. My earliest memories are of singing along to the rock records I'd inherited when my oldest siblings moved away to attend college. (Side note- WHY would anyone leave their records at home when they move away?) I would learn all the background vocals and harmonies while I memorized the production notes listed on the record cover. As I got older I read Circus and Creem magazines (I still have some of them-can't believe I didn't keep them.) We lived too far away from other people and the town to be able to go somewhere after school, and there were no homes near us, so we didn't have friends over much nor did we go to their homes very often. My brother was into his motorcycles, I had the horses and music. It was often too hot to go outside so I would listen to the radio, often calling the DJ to discuss an artists new release. I won contests so often they banned me. As a teenager I was too shy to be in a band so I picked up a camera and took concert photos- excellent photos. This enabled me to be onstage with the rock stars and gave me a reason to be around the bands that separated me from the groupies. I attended more than 200 concerts my sophomore year of high school. My friend was very outgoing and she'd talk our way into backstage passes. In this way both of us found ourselves onstage with The Rolling Stones, dancing to Honky Tonk Women and making the cut into the live movie, "Let's Spend the Night Together "! I began to attend local punk rock shows and met the people who became my tribe- all my friends and husbands came from that group. I wrote music articles for the U of AZ student newspaper, too. I was offered to move to NYC to be a music journalist, but I became a mom and opted to stay put. I ended up as a teacher who had an after school Rock History class. I admire how you've put your talent to use as a career- your timing is perfect. Just a few years back you would not have had RU-vid to create a channel for, but now you have a MILLION subscribers!!! It's so great!! You are doing a fantastic job. I confess I sometimes get frustrated when you tell your subjects that you really resonated with a song of theirs when it came out, when you were 2 or 3. I remember songs having an effect on me at that age, maybe because it had scary music, but I could not truly resonate with the song at 3 years old. As much as I admire you, I don't think you truly remember when REO Speedwagon hit it big, at least not in the way an older kid or adult does. I thought I saw Kevin Cronins face fall when he heard you tell him you were 3 or 4 when the album was released. But I could be wrong. Also it does not deter from how great the interviews are. Congratulations!!!

Dude, I was going to pass this video up. I really was. I am 52 yrs old, and I can say that not watching this would have been one of my biggest mistakes. What a truly BEAUTIFUL love letter to your passions and inspirations. The respect that is passed between you and the artists you interview is so wonderful to watch. For us to be a "fly on the wall" as some of the most PROLIFIC artists of our lifetime sit down to chat with one of the most studius of music historians is magnificent to behold. I had forgotten about Sam Goodie! The pieces with your loved ones are so touching. Your channel is phenomenal. I won't doubt you again lol

This is what I wanted, a trip through your musical life Adam...very proud of you and how you've stuck it out!! Like your Dad, Paul McCartney was my favorite, especially when he was with The Wings. When I was a kid, my Dad and I would go to James Bond movies, like Live and Let Die! That set a tone for music for me, that song and Band On The Run!! So happy for you Prof. You deserve even more subscribers. As a retired teacher I want to apologize for any teacher who ever told anyone that they would not amount to anything. Don’t listen to them and follow your heart and dreams. Prof. Rock is the perfect example of leaning all you can and utilizing it. Education can be schooling, self taught and life experiences. You don’t need a ton of degrees to succeed. The lack of education is the road to slavery. Don’t ever let someone enslave you because you don’t know.

When I found out that my dad was sick, I started to interview him. I'm so grateful for that time. We both got to know eachother on a deeper level. I miss him so much. He truly was my hero.

nice you did late dad was interviewed by a local reporter and was same a sports talk show when he retired but my brother asked each guy for a copyna few years latet but was too late had dementia but at least we have a few newspaper articles from that time the local tv reporter planned to save the interview give to my brother but he had so many just was lost the radio one was like 20 minutes but same so enciurage anyone to interview before its too late my brother regretted because he wrote a book about his life

I had a few deep conversations with my dad before he passed and glad I asked him questions to find out how he truly felt and what he really went through before it was too late. I'm so glad I did. Those are the memories worth keeping. We'll see our dads again one day❤

"I learned more from a 3 minute record than I ever learned in school". Well said. Classic rock lyrics taught me so many key lessons. Us and Them, the insanity of war. Don't surround yourself with your self (YES). "No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun". I didn't want to get left behind so I got out there early into my profession. I graduated high school here in Oklahoma in 1983 so I was a teenager in the late 70's and the early 80's for me it was rock and roll music, classic television series, pro wrestling and old superhero comics I'm 59 now and i still like it all today in 2024 Thank You Adam.🤠🎸🎹🥁🎤

The passion, coupled with the bottomless depth of knowledge, instantly connects Adam to those he interviews. I’m sure the musicians are used to shallow, repetitive interviews until Adam arrives and they are drawn in by his authenticity, professionalism and love of the craft. Watching this video is great as it shows much of the backstory often alluded to in his other videos, and also shows snippets of earlier interviews with some artists who have since passed - Adam’s interview being a superb documentation to their legacy. I was born in Los Angeles, an adopted young with my twin brother by a set of parents that couldn't have natural children, and they raised me in their image. By 1973, when we were nine, my parents didn't like what Los Angeles was becoming and they moved me to rural Wyoming, so I grew up much like you, Professor. Where we are different is that I used to pretend to be a sportscaster, and I would put paper cutouts of the songs on the air and write them on little circles and spin them on my Tinker Toys like I was playing them, and my twin brother became a DX type of guy that would listen to AM radio and try to find distant stations from our desolate Northern Wyoming home. I got started in broadcasting at age 17 at a country station, even though I was a rocker. Then, I joined the service, and I volunteered at Armed Forces radio. I got bit by the karaoke bug and ended up karaoke hosting when I was stateside, since you can't do commercial radio or Armed Forces Radio inside the United States when you're active duty stationed in the states. I got married in 2015 to the woman I'm going to keep for the rest of my life, and she's the one that signed me up for public radio in 2018. She told me she thought I'd get bored, and she wanted me to be more active. Now, the Olympic Peninsula knows who her husband is. I often look for trivia like you do to talk about the songs that are played on the air. We love them both the same, only I want to present them, and you are so good at presenting the artists themselves. I just wanted to say that we have matching passions and I hope we keep going as long as time will allow us. Of course, my wife is a Master Gardener and we have five acres of property to take care of, but I am building my own studio and I will try to catch up.

One million subscribers is a testament to how much music affects us all. I raised my kids on the music I loved. They each have their own tastes now, but can definitely appreciate many genres. Inspired by your stories, I have begun creating a calendar of 365 of my favorite songs in a google slide so when I pass, my kids can listen to a song a day along with a few scribbles in a notebook explaining what that song meant to me. I hope it will be something they enjoy since I am enjoying working on it.

Wow!! I've got tears in my eyes from this episode, Adam. As someone who grew up on the other side of the Tetons in the 80's in Jackson Hole, I understand intrinsically everything word you said in this episode. I grew up on the banks of the Snake River, working incredibly hard to save up for my first guitar. We share an era of time and music unmatched! Keep up the great work!! I grew up listening to rock ‘n’ roll and music from the 50s 60s and 70s and 80s in most of the 90s and I love going behind the music of all the artist knowing the artist lives and everything else.Thank you Professor for having a channel where I can learnSo much from the artist them selves. i’m glad no amount of discouragement decided to deter you and focusing on your rock ‘n’ roll dreams.

2:16 As soon as I heard you say you were interviewing your Dad, I already knew this too would become my favorite interview. Like your Dad did with you, for me, it was my Mom. Although I grew up to be more of a hard rock/heavy metal kind of girl, I have such a deep appreciation for r&b, Motown, Disco and AC. I so wished we could have gone to more concerts or that she could have just seen the 1 concert she always wanted to see.......Elvis. A couple years before her stroke, I did get to take her to see Elton John and we had the best time. We danced, sang, cried, and shared a wonderful night of great music. Even though her stroke left her unable to speak or walk, for 7 years she still tried to sing and dance with what little movement she had. Because of COVID, we were not allowed to be with her as she passed and had to stand outside the building & watch her through a window as she ascended to her heavenly spot and she did so listening to Elvis. I will always be so grateful to Sam, her nurse, and him putting his phone next to her ear as Elvis gospel played through the speaker. She had shown no signs of awareness or emotions that day, but that all changed when she heard Elvis and she smiled and a couple hours later, she was gone. I'm so thankful I had her for my Mom & that I got to hand down the music she inspired me with to my children and now I get to do it with my grandchildren. They are so much like her in that they love Disco, Motown, and Elvis. Congratulations, Adam and cheers to your continued success 🥂

Hi Adam; as one of the comments said, ‘I was ready to dismiss this video’ but I started watching and waiting for some heavy hitter in the rock world from the 80’s but when it was about your dad I nearly switched off but I didn’t! This is up there with the best, I’m a 70’s kid (7-17 in the 80’s) I lost my dad seven years ago and we didn’t have the best relationship either, he was a drinker and regularly beat my mum up and even me, he was diagnosed with a range of illnesses and stopped drinking where he became my dad, he was a different man which I had missed growing up! We didn’t have the music connection as you and your dad but I saw some similarities with you not getting along. This is up there with your best video🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I'm now 70 years old and enjoy a lot of your incites. Music was my mothers passion and we lost her in 1958 so music became my passion, thanks for all you do. BTW I grew up in Seattle listening to top 40 music on 950 KJR owned by Pat O'Day the legend.

Congrats on 1 million subscribers! This is well deserved Adam! Like you, I'm a child of the 80's, and my life has always been marked by music. I grew up in Jacksonville Florida, 1 generation removed from dirt poor, thankful that Strawberry Fields did layaway for back to school. Daddy loved rock and mother loves country, so I grew up listening to both until I was a teenager. It was what bound Daddy and I, because he loved this channel that played "The best of the 60's, 70's and 80's. It made me appreciate the bands Daddy grew up with, with his 2 favorites being The Beach Boys and Bob Segar. We listened to The Beatles, The Who, and so many others whose names I can't remember, but whose songs I still love on Sirius XM's decades channels. As a teenager myself, I listened to Billy Squire, Def Leppard, Black Flag, and anyone else who made me want to "Bang Your Head." Your channel just keeps filling in back stories of the songs I've loved, day after day. Keep on rocking!!

Born in Queens NY & grew up on Long Island… music was always on from Beatles to Zeppelin, classical music to the Great American Song Book… mom played folk guitar & dad played piano and accordion which was a gift from his cousin Peppino Di Capri, who is a singer in Italy & opened for the Beatles in 1965 in Milan. My parents were there. Girls screaming….mom said, I have the playlist & poster.❤So great to hear your story. ❤❤❤

Congrats on hitting 1 million. I think the 2nd million will come along much quicker. My wife, who I just lost this past March 23rd, and I first connected over our love of the Beatles. On May 31st, (in 2 weeks) it would have been our 33rd Anniversary. She may be gone, but whenever I hear a Beatles song, she's sitting next to me, Rockin' along. Thank you for keeping the spirit of Rock alive.

I think this is why I love your channel so much. The information is incredible. I was raised in a musical family, mom was a concert pianist and my teacher. She loved classical, folk music and 60’s rock. My brother became my teacher after she passed and introduced me to classical guitar. My father loved rock and early metal and loves rock and metal.

Sir, our stories couldn't be more alike! I grew up in a small farming town in eastern washington at just about the same time as you it appears. I also used to work the orchards, moving pipe before school, riding my bmx all over town and country. Buying cassettes and later, CD's. I too connected with my father while working on cars and the farm while listening to his music and stories of the time he grew up. CCR, the Byrds, Hendrix, Beatles, etc. But it was generational too, because I bonded with my grandma and learned to dance listening to Glen Miller and his Orchestra, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Sinatra etc. Music really is the throughline that connects generations, hearts and minds, and brings people together in a way that's undeniably powerful and deep. There's a reason churches use music... there's something about it that makes people feel connected and part of something. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I see why it's your favorite Adam. Especially when it's your family. . Mainly your dad. Have a great rest of your day man. My town was very similar. Small town called Erath in Louisiana. We had a hometown famous folk singer named DL Menard. Cajun singer. We were not connected to a lot of areas. Closest big city was Lafayette which was almost an hour away at the time. It was wonderful.

You, my friend, are by far one of my favorite channels to watch. Born in Jan of '78, I have always had a love for music, it was my form of emotional expression and listen to most everything from the 1920's until now (though mostly stopping in the early 2000's). Oh, and as a side note, I will eat atomic fireballs one after the other!

I were borned in 1956, I quit music radio in 1980. I moved over to the best talk radio ever, KMOX 1120, then in 1992? Robert Hyland died, it’s never been the same;(;( The same is true of music after the 1970’s. The only 80’s bands I could stand were those of the golden age, 1955-1980;) Since 2000 you can’t be sure if you’re hearing true talent, or an autotune cleaned up recording!!

Superb! Love this video. I grew up in New Orleans and was bussed 28 miles into the inner city to school. Our bus had a sound system and the driver played the hits of the late 60's. The Beatles, the Animals, Steppenwolf and all of the great rock songs of the late 60's. The station was WTIX in New Orleans. Those songs still take me back to specific places and people. Later I moved to Kentucky and was hooked on the music of the 70's. It was a great time to be a kid listening to the music. When I first started dating we drove around listening to WLS in Chicago which we could pick up at night in Kentucky. I remember the D.J. Bob Surratt (sp?) who played all of the hits of the 70's. Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, the Doobie Brothers, Edgar Winter, Chicago, the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, and so many more. I had an 8-track in my VW Beetle that I blasted Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Ten Years After, Emerson Lake and Palmer and the like. The music created the ambiance of the time. There's something magic about it.

Congratz to a small town "farm boy" who was reared in outlying villages of the metropolis of Groveland. 😂😂 I am a country bumpkin who grew up in rural southern Utah and move pipes for 4 summers in Bancroft, Id. When I listen to you, I'm with family. I found your channel about 2 years ago and have been loyal music "fanboy" of yours. I have 5 sons and they listen basically to music from the 60s - early 90s. I was talking with one of them the other day, he just moved back to the States from Ozland, and he mentioned the song lists his two sons,13 and 11, have is the same. Finally, I felt the thrill of having been a successful father. I was a single father raising my three older boys for most of their lives. Funny thing, ask those two grandsons their favorite song, and they'll say "Shaving Cream." They sing it arouud their mum becquse it drives her crazy. Their litttle sisters are starting to pick it up now. That is so awesome. And Mr. Prof of Music, most kind sir, thank you so much.
