Show this to anyone who asks why you train Krav Maga.
Krav Maga not a Martial Art and its not a combat sport like Boxing or MMA. Krav Maga is a form of self defense and physical training first developed by the Israeli Army in the 1940s, based on the use of reflexive responses to threatening situations.

Krav Maga is about lot more than just fighting. Many people think that self defence and street fighting are the same thing. They’re not. Krav Maga goes far deeper beyond simply no rules street fighting.

For everyone that says there's no pressure testing in training: In my gym, we were literally conditioned to attack other students as robustly as possible and not simply comply to the technique. If someone didn't actually attack, but gave in willingly, which sometimes happened, our coach would remind him to actually try to resist the technique.

PSA: This is a flashy "sales" video for a "McDojo" martial art. - Krav Maga does not teach you to face and disengage another human in unarmed combat because it lacks sparring, "pressure testing" what you learned. -The success rate of defending a knife attack safely even by the most well trained is roughly 5%. -Aikido is not a martial art, it's a demonstration of one. -Self defence is a legal term not a system of combat conduct. - the vast majority of courses called "self defense" is nearly worthless. - Want to just have fun? Train whatever is fun to you. Want to defend yourself? Learn a combat sport (boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, judo, ju-jutsu, wrestling...etc). These are tips from a martial artist / combat sports practitioner who tried a lot of things for many years.

I have always been an advocate that if you're going to defend yourself then Defend Yourself. In any situation where you're being attacked there are no referees who are going to pull the other guy off you. There are no rules, always assume your attacker is out to kill you and won't stop until he dose so, then will spit on your corpes and do a little dance while laughing afterwards. I'm not saying kill or be killed but make sure your attacker is no longer capable if attacking you for the foreseeable future. Even if it means breaking bones or crippling him.

i was a Close Combat Instructor in The Corps and a U.S. Recon Marine vet. I also hold a black belt and brown belt in Okinawan Karate and Judo respectively and was taught by my Dad to box at a young age and boxed in Golden Gloves in H.S., finishing with a 24 - 4 amateur record. I have looked closely at Krav Maga; it was initially designed by the Israelis to teach to mostly untrained defense forces personnel to allow them a simple method of teaching martial hand to hand skills against multiple untrained aggressors to allow them to stay alive long enough to flee. Like all martial hand to hand teachings it can be effective given the right circumstances and the relative size/strength and proficiency of the two parties involved. In my opinion, the three top martial skills to learn in order are 1.) Boxing, 2.) Judo or Jujitsu and 3.) Weng Chung or Okinawan Karate.

You will find very few videos that tell you the absolute basics of how to engage when it’s a question of fight or flight. These guys are experts and so they can identify their targets and hit them with precision. This takes years of knowledge and practice but seems so easy on the screen. Almost all strikes are to the head and upper body and therefore also look impressive. These exercises are for the Dojo, not for street emergencies. Hitting others in the face is definitely not recommended - these days there are always those with phone cameras and that sort of evidence if the police turn up will always go against you initially - although it’s a natural instinct when we give in to our emotions instead of keeping focused on the main aim and that is to injure your opponent correctly so as to then go to the next phase which is flight. Dropping someone to the floor and then going down with them is also a no-no in the street, the most unsuspected individuals could join in and speed of execution is your goal. Now, the most important thing to keep in mind is that someone with an injured leg can’t run. This must be your priority: neutralize the leg. One leg is enough and the advantage is that there are two of them, versus one head, so you can choose whichever side suits you best. When confronted raise the arms as if to offer surrender. This catches the opponent off guard, keeps your head protected and also acts as an upper body stabilizer for the kick. Don’t kick with your toes out in front, much the same as with the hand; fingers and toes break with relative ease, that’s why punching isn’t recommended and open palm strikes are, use the heel instead. A sideways motion catching and displacing the kneecap is ideal. If you miss, you’ll at least have made the leg double sideways and if not breaking something is at least extremely painful; a straight blow to the knee will make the opponent feel sick and if hard enough will have them out of the game for long enough for you to get away. Also, on camera, it doesn’t show you to be either an expert or willing to inflict purposeful injury, rather a clumsy, spur of the moment way out. Now start practising at home so your “clumsiness” is highly effective. Like the man said, the more you do it, the better at it you are.

@RonEngelmanKM
@RonEngelmanKM 2 года назад
Very true. In a fight both combatants arrive ready and mentally prepared. Even two idiots fighting in a parking lot, both sides have made an active choice to be there and fight. In self defence it’s usually a matter of assault against an unready defender (the assumption is, if they saw it coming they would have tried to avoid the assault). But he have one advantage. The attacker may have chosen the target, the location, the place and the time, but usually for this reason they are in no way prepared for an aggressive and very violent response from the person they chose to attack. This catches them off guard and tips the scales in the defenders favour. That’s where Krav Maga comes in. We overwhelm the attacker, distance ourselves and draw our weapon (in the case of military or police) or run away in the case of civilians.

Not for me. I find the style of editting makes the video more flashy and attractive. When watching Bruce Lee we usually had to slow down the video but with KM it's editted in a way to speed it up to make it look more potent. The second thing when I watch Krav Maga it always starts off in a position that already has the attacker in his personal space. If a person finds themselves in this positions it's cause they messed up. Krav maga talks about kicks to the groin, eye gauging and other alternatives that isnt allowed in a mma scenario but I've never seen any KM school practise these defense drills. @@kencallwood9066 I looked at it now and yes there is a basic groin strike thats usually done with holding the arm. Ever notice that when practising for a knife defence they always practise with right arm. If the attacker holds the blade in the other hand it will surprise the K.M. Also in K.M the attacks are always one direction. Fundamentals of a street fight is that you won't ever see a weapon in the real world and a knife attack changes angles all the time.

That said, we practice most techniques on both sides and the most basic drill is the 360º defense where we simulate attacks coming from all angles. The attacks in KM are definitely NOT always from one direction and it is an accepted fact that in a knife fight you WILL bet cut or stabbed at least once. The point of KM and these drills is to train your mind to not stop and to train your body on what to do if you manage to block the attack so you can minimize the damage and incapacitate or eliminate the threat as quickly as possible. No clue where you live or how many real life classes you've attended, but my advice would be to seek out a school that pushes you to the physical and mental limits and try it out for a month. If you're still not convinced, then you can go back to whatever it is you currently do.

@@kencallwood9066 It's good to hear that you guys are training for full 360 and I appreciate the honest answer. Yes in these circumstances there is really good knowledge and you seem like someone who knows their stuff. Unfortunately that quality of level is rare. Coming to what I've seen so far is that K.M uses sometimes a little to much force. K.m is supposed to be an always evolving self defence system but when I do show a technique to a K.M practionar thats very affective then they will shy away. For example a simple triangle with the arms and a simple forward step instead of a flying body. Krav Maga also has alot of teachers who preach it's not a martial art but then teach the hammer fist from MMA. (Some of them actually watch UFC and use those techniques in a live situation. )

There is always a philosophy behind the martial art. In reality, you are just being trained how to defend yourself . All that matters is if the martial art adequately prepares you for the scenarios it trains you to handle. An evil or good person can learn the mechanics of martial arts. It is no different than learning how to shoot a gun.

First thing Krav taught me is how to run away effectively. It's really about survival and fighting as a last resort - but doing it properly. Most people I've met who are Krav Maga "veterans" have not had to use their skills at all outside of competition/grading ceremonies. The occasional person has stories about the odd bar fight (my instructor even had CCTV footage of him narrowly escaping 4 drunk guys to show that when dealing with drunk people, you can really use their state of mind to your advantage). I learned pretty quickly that fighting is really really unpredictable, particularly when it comes to street fights. In my instructor's footage, one of the people threw their keys in his face and left him with a black eye; this is not something you can predict at all, and will totally alter the outcome of a street fight. The longer you spend in those situations, the exponentially more difficult it becomes to survive and get away without taking damage or having to deal with the very tricky criminal implications of defending yourself. The one thing which will get you into trouble more than anything else is EGO. Arrogance has no place in a street fight; don't assume you're more skilled than they are, just focus on surviving. If all they want is your money/phone/car keys, give it to them and get out of that situation safely. Your belongings are not worth your life.

"Krav Maga not a Martial Art"... yes it is. It fits the very definition of a martial art because it was developed by a military for self-defense applications! (and therefore also conforms to "martial" traditions.) This doesn't mean that it is any more or less effective. It has many of the same features of Okinawan karate and other defense oriented fighting styles. In fact, it looks like what the old Okinawan masters were teaching prior to karate being systematized in Japan in the 1920s. Anyways, great video. Thank you for sharing.

@حر الرياحي the thing is Muay Thai fighters have an extremely unique way of striking. The combat mechanics is COMPLETELY different from what Krav Maga trains you for. For example, Krav Maga teaches you how to deal with strikes from the fist. It doesn't teach you what to do when someone comes at you with an elbow. Krav Maga ain't the broadest, so to speak, self defence system, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work at all. It works in very specific situations, but it works phenomenally. I did get attacked once, and let's just say it worked really well for me. I read a comment above about being well rounded. So if someone pulls a knife or a gun or something along those lines, KM is good. If you're going up against Muay Thai or BJJ or something, other systems may be better suited for those!

In KM you are training to defend yourself against untrained attackers. Military KM originated as a system to quickly train soldiers with simple, gross motor fighting skills where aggression can cover up technical deficiencies under stress and combat conditions. Similarly, civilian KM aims to give regular people simple, principle-based fighting skills to defend themselves against untrained attackers, where aggression and relentlessness can cover up technical gaps under stressful conditions.

@@djharto4917 well said. Krav could be good if they implemeted good boxing and bjj in their training, as well as sparring and pressure testing. You don't need to be an elite boxer to be able to look after yourself, but I do believe that it is the basis of all self defense and fighting arts.
@ionlucian421
@ionlucian421 2 года назад
@Kripton Chairs unfortunately too few of them do sparring lessons. Most focus on techniques, because tis is what people actually look for. Most people who start krav maga wish to know how to handle themselves if the situation arises without getting hurt in the process. So the multitude of techniques that appear very aggressive is very appealing. If you watch the episode on krav maga of Fight Quest, you'll see what I mean by sparring or pressure testing.

Krav Maga is simply another form of traditional jujitsu, albeit hyper-adrenalized with no level of mastery involved. It's a common person's self-defense method done in an overt way. It's just ok as with any other self-defense form. It works and can save your life. The problem with Krav training is the emphasis on hyper-vigilance bordering on paranoia and lack of gradation in the response to a threat. It's all or nothing and this shit can put people in jail for hurt people needlessly. Do yourselves a favour and find a different type of self-defense that stresses grappling (tho not that silly ass goofy BJJ which can also get you killed) with an instructor who will show you how to control someone with different levels of force. Krav Maga, as a fundamental self-defense philosophy, has no room for mastery. Only response. Helluva thing for something that really is nothing more than jujitsu with a little bit of wrestling thrown in.
