That's sad. The CMY color model is actually easier to understand than the RYB color model. Particularly because it is the opposite of the RGB color model we use in lights, instead, we use the CMY color model in pigments such as paints, inks, crayons, filters, sand, and any type of medium.

You can even test it on your phone. Try to capture things with true red, green, and blue colors like my profile photo, invert each photo, and you'll see they turn into cyan, magenta, and yellow. It's actually logical to think about it! They're opposites!

Just wanted to add my two cents here, about that difference between additive and subtractive color that was mentioned. Basically, additive = light, subtractive = paint, clay, anything that isn't glowing. They're called that because with light, like on a computer screen, when you mix two colors together you're adding them. Green + Blue = Cyan, Green + Red = Yellow, Red + Blue = Magenta. This is how our eyes process light and color. But! When you're using paint, Green + Red is not yellow. It's some gross swampy grey-brown. This is because paint isn't sending light directly into your eyes, white light has to bounce off it first. Some wavelengths are absorbed, or subtracted, and others are reflected into your eyes. So paint is green when it absorbs everything except green, i.e. red and blue. Red paint absorbs blue and green. So now, when you mix these two paints, you're not mixing red and green light. You're mixing two paints, one that's absorbing red and blue, and one that's absorbing blue and green. So your new paint will absorb a lot of blue, and will technically be yellow, but it will also absorb a lot of red and green and become darker and a lot more desaturated. That's why Cyan/Magenta/Yellow are the primary colors for paints. Cyan is a mix between blue and green, so the paint version of cyan is only absorbing red. Cyan absorbs red, magenta absorbs green, yellow absorbs blue. Now, if you want to mix, say, blue, you mix cyan paint, which will absorb the red wavelengths, and magenta paint, which absorbs the green ones, leaving only the blue ones to bounce off and into your eyes. So, if you're using triadic and on the fence about whether to try CMY, just... remember that example earlier? About why red + green = greyish brown instead of yellow? Imagine how much incoherent shrieking you would do if people started insisting that yellow was not a primary color and could be made by mixing red and green. Just imagine it. Imagine them looking you dead in the eyes, pointing at that disgusting mess, and telling you it's yellow. Because that's exactly what the triadic color wheel does to cyan and magenta.

This is interesting. I learned the word 青色 in japanese and it has always been translated as "blue". However, some people say it is a greenish-blue. When I looked it up on google, it was the color of the sky, which is "blue" in English... so, actually, 青色 is cyan and the Japanese have known it all this time ? and the translation as "blue" is due to the fact the english speakers call the cyan color "blue". Idk if it makes sense... but I just understood some things idk if it is even that related i just wanted to point it out

The latter half of the video is actually not entirely correct... Magenta is both real _and_ it's created by our brain. Because all colors are. Our eyes have color receptors for red, green, and blue light (called cones), and _every_ other color is created by "mixing" those three. I put mixing in quotations because you're not _really_ mixing... You're perceiving both types of light at the same time, and your brain is judging accordingly. Your brain isn't "seeing what's in the middle" of the spectrum, because the little graphic that Echo showed is, itself, a human construct, just as much as the color wheel. There are no yellow wavelengths or cyan wavelengths, there's just an empty spot (sort of). But because we have to visualize them as the color blending into each other, it makes us think "oh, that must mean this wavelength corresponds with yellow/cyan", when in reality, there isn't _any_ wavelength for yellow/cyan, because those colors are just how we perceive green light at full intensity with red/blue light at full intensity. And the reason why we always visualize them in that order is because of the length of the wavelengths (for lack of better phrasing). Red has the longest waves while blue has the shortest, so they stand on opposite sides, while green has comparatively medium-length waves, so it lies in the middle. Yellow is not "in-between" red and green, it is both colors of light together at full capacity. And cyan is not "in-between" green and blue, it is both colors of light together at full capacity. The same goes for magenta: _of course_ it isn't "in-between" red and blue, because that's just not how light and color work- there is no intrinsic and objective graphic that defines life- it is us that create them based on our understanding of the world. Magenta is not "in-between" red and blue, it is both colors of light together at full capacity. Magenta is not a lie, it is a beautiful duet between red and blue in which they are both at full volume, harmonizing.

@DANGJOS 4 года назад

@Mr.Sparks.173
@Mr.Sparks.173 4 года назад
The two colour systems - additive and subtractive- explains fully how colour works. You see stuff because a wave of light travels from a source, hits an object, reflects off that object into your eye. Light adds colour to the world making it the additive colour system. In this red, blue, and green are the primary colours, white is the presence of all colour and black is the absence of all colour. When the light strikes an object, some wavelengths are absorbed and some are reflected, those that are reflected is what we then experience as colour. In this the primary colours are magenta, cyan, and yellow, white is the absence of all colour (it reflects all light) and black is the presence of all colour (it absorbs all light). So what happens with magenta (and pink, purple and other such hues) is that white light (made of red, blue and green) hits the magenta thing, the green light is absorbed and the blue and red light is reflected into our eyeballs. If you were to have a light that only had green wavelengths of light, when it hit the magenta thing, it would be totally absorbed, making it look black and not magenta. Yellow does the same thing- absorbs all blue light, reflects all red and green light resulting in something that looks yellow. Finally cyan absorbs all red light, reflecting all green and blue light. Mixing magenta and yellow is essentially making a pigment that absorbs all green (the magenta) and blue (the yellow) wavelengths of light, leaving only red light to be reflected. Same thing happens with cyan and magenta - all red (the cyan) and green (the magenta) light is absorbed leaving only blue light to be reflected. Which leaves me with one final trick with colour, what happens when you shine a yellow light (only red and green) on a magenta object (absorbs all green light)? It looks red rather than magenta because theres no blue light to reflect and the green light is absorbed, leaving only red to be reflected.

The latter half of the video is actually not entirely correct... Magenta is both real _and_ it's created by our brain. Because all colors are. Our eyes have color receptors for reg, green, and blue light (called cones), and _every_ other color is created by "mixing" those three.

Because when we believe a lie for long enough it can feel like a part of us. But, your brain is tricking you. Echo is not yelling at you, she is yelling for your sake (and mine), because she is mad we were lied to. Echo directly said "you have been lied to", in saying that she was completely absolving us of fault for believing-the-thing, but that doesn't change our brains urge to protect long-held ideas as if they're a part of ourself. So when she is angry at the lying and the specific belief which is a lie, it can feel like anger at us, because we held that belief. Don't let your brain trick you, let the wrong belief go, and know that Echo is yelling on our behalf. :)

actually purple is more real than blue. you can't find pigment that is blue in nature all the blue that exists in nature are physical structures that brakes the light to show blue but blue as a pigment in nature is not real while purple as a pigment exists in nature, sure it is rare but not as blue. (i mean you could find more purple flowers than blue) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KN7krvnm2uM.html and another thing if you don't explain what is the difference between subtractive and additive colours or at least leave a link to a video where it is explained this, how do you expect me or anyone to understand when you use this phrase during the video and how it is effecting on the difference between RYB and MYC? this is a lack of information (cuz, not all people have this information) hurts your main point cuz if I don't know what the difference and all I see is that one green is less vibrant than the other, it is still green so RBY is still primary colour and does not change anything in my perspective. if you do not want to get into details about a certain phrase than don't use it during the video, it makes your point unclear and if you need this phrase to explain your point you need to give that information. plus a major thing I think you should have mentioned at the begging of your video is that you are talking about coulour theory of pigments and not in physics cuz it is different. light acts differently than pigment you'll get different results using light or using pigment; if you mix RBY in light you'll get white while in pigment you get black or brown it is different. (p.s. although I am not sure of it, I think this could also be dependant on the medium of art you are using, cuz oil paints acts differently from watercolour or acrylics and as far as I know, they don't make cyan or magenta in oil paints and yet bob ross still made wonderful paintings)

healla2000, it's RGB (the RYB is the lie!) vs MYC, the whole point was that these sets are either primary or secondary depending on the TYPE of mixing. Since light mixing is additive (their intensities add up), while pigment mixing is subtractive (paints absorb light, the more you pile on the darker it gets). You seem to know there were different types (CTP vs physics), but was apparently unaware that THESE were the two. And if you payed any attention at 1:04 you'd have seen that BOTH were mentioned, even though later on the pigments were talked about in more detail. And i'd have to disagree with your point of not using something unless it's clearly defined: anyone interested to learn more about the subject is free to look it up, while if it wasn't mentioned we might not even KNOW that there's something to look into.

@skurinski
@skurinski 5 лет назад
You're wrong too. I wish scientists would stop telling people that there are "red", "green", and "blue" cones. This is very far from the truth and is especially a problem when describing vision vs perception. The cones types are labeled S, M, and L (for short, medium, and long; refering to wavelength). [The actual names of the cones are beta, gamma, and rho; but those are harder to refer to as they aren't on most standard keyboards os I will be using S, M, and L] 'S' cones are most sensitive to violet light, 'M' cones to a yellow-green, and 'L' cones to yellow. 'L' cones also have a small peak in the violet-blue which is often not shown but is vital to understanding our brains interpretation of cyan through magenta (with magenta appearing as ultra-purple) Red is 'L' with little to no 'M'. Cyan is 'S' with 'L' and a little 'M' (this is possible because 'L' cones are have a small peak in the blue range). Purple (not magenta) is 'S' sensitivity alone. Magenta is the brain's interpretation of 'S' with 'L' with no 'M'. Magenta is more visibly on the purple side because of the brain seeing it as a natural extension of 'S'+'L'. Humans are one of the only mammals to see reds so clearly, but this has more to do with our brains' large visual cortex and less to do with our eyes. Red is just as much an interpretation as magenta, there just happens to be a visible wavelength associated with it. We would see near-UV as magenta if we could see those wavelengths with our cones. We can't because our lenses filter out most of the light in that range and so it falls below the threshold of photopic (cone based) vision. People who have had their lenses surgically replaced with artificial lenses that are more UV transparent do in fact see near UV light as a magenta or magenta haze.

Yea. Additive primaries are actually arbitrary and RGB color space isn’t really the best. It’s simply the standard because it works with technology. If you look at a color gamut diagram you see that no three primaries can possibly cover the entire visual spectrum.

What about Brown,silver,gold and black how does your eyes make those? Is it the same as the magenta?
@majacovic5141

brown is dark orange. silver & gold are light gray and dark yellow + reflectiveness. all metals are color + reflection. black is the absence of color.

The latter half of the video is actually not entirely correct... Magenta is both real _and_ it's created by our brain. Because all colors are. Our eyes have color receptors for reg, green, and blue light (called cones), and _every_ other color is created by "mixing" those three. Magenta is not a lie, it is a beautiful duet between red and blue in which they are both at full volume, harmonizing.

aw man i was so disappointed to go to your videos and see that this is the only one about color theory. I loved how well you explained this, it was easy to understand and entertaining at the same time. A shame to see you havent expanded on color theory for art, i find it so hard to understand. I feel like i understood everything you said but i have no clue what to use it for haha specially considering you mentioned something about substractive or additive so i feel more lost than before somehow, but i guess i know two news words i should use more.
