A separation like this happens because of a spring, which pushes cold (more dense) water against warmer water. Usually an effect which doesn’t get much attention, as it’s rather invisible. The bigger the temperature difference though and the smoother the spring flows, the cleaner the separation in between the waters. Here the swamp water is A) muddy and B) warm enough and the spring water cold, slow and clean enough to make this division so beautifully sharp. It really is amazing and rare because of all these factors. Thanks for sharing!

I believe effects like this can also be caused by both density levels in the water and salt levels but I think that might be more underwater stuff.

That is the result of a thermocline. It also happens when brackish water intrudes into a fresh water area. In Alaska we have areas like this when the tide is moving near a large fresh water source. The river will be muddy and silty but the ocean is much clearer. It creates some really interesting ribbons in the bay near Homer.

There’s places in the arctic waters where freshwater mains freeze into stalagmite type formations because of their higher freezing point. I would speculate that maybe there’s a different makeup of water between the sides. But where they merge there appeared to be enter mixing, so I’m guessing there’s a source adding the muddy water and a minuet current in there thus allowing it to slowly move across as a unified front.
