I know I'm late to reply, but no you're not the only one. The effect wasn't explained very well. There's a red filter applied to the photo - one uniform shade of red - but because your brain knows that things aren't all one color, for example fruits which are usually many different bright colors, the red filter sort of "cancels out" & appears shades of red, pink, grey, etc. It becomes more noticeable if you stare at the picture for a minute or two. You might start seeing bits of other colors pop up where they aren't!

thatcrazygirlyouknow point some red light at it... the point of the illusion is supposed to be that if its seen under red light your eye adjusts so it will think its all red coz the lighting is red... or something like that... ive seen a similar thing but it was with yellow and it is amazing when it actually works

There's a little bit of green above the cup. Put it into paint and color picked it, right on the line of solid yellow and red. So a kind-of mix. It's also close to the center, so it's more grey-ish too.

the reason behind why everyone saw only the shades of red is because youtube upgraded the quality. when vsauce uploaded this , youtube did not have such great quality and color pixel , so , when michael uploads it , it appears to be yellow and green . thats the reason behind it . everyone watching after 2014 will not see the effect anymore.

i mean the op is either joking or completely clueless. "youtube quality" has nothing to do with this effect, it was documented in the 1950s, long before youtube existed. this is about how our *brains* rebalance colors (after you stare at them for a long time in full screen - it won't be immediate, and won't work if your eyes can see other colors, like "real" green, at the same time). its basically the same effect you get after you wear anaglyph (red/blue) 3d glasses for a long time. when you remove them and close each eye alternately, the eye that had the red lens will see everything in blue and the eye that had the blue lens will see everything in red, because your brain rebalanced the input from each eye.

for most of that picture i only see red or pink. i see no oranges or greens at all. except for that area above the plastic cup. pause at 0:52. look at the plastic cup on the middle right of that picture. look straight above it. in between there and the arm (closer to the cup), that is definitely green. i even tried it on paint using the color picker tool. it is dark grayish-green im 100% positive. but aside from that, the picture is only red and pink as i can see.

This really is great. There are no (if any) pop culture references to date it, so it stays essentially timeless. It’s interesting, for me it changed right after I saw the video/explanation. First time the green was so obvious to me, I was almost in disbelief when he showed the wheel proving it was just a grey. But the day after I had watched the video for the first time, everything was all of a sudden obviously red (various shades) + grey. I guess once the brain knows the lighting conditions it initially perceived are not “real”, it can see the colors objectively for what they are
