We are back with Jonathan Bailey (Tim) and Matt Bomer (Hawk) as they face the realities of being gay in the 1950's! This show is tough to watch but so important.

Thank you for bringing up the importance of intergenerational friendships in the LGBTQ community and for the importance of knowing your history. I'm 61 and I came of age as a gay man right at the start of the AIDS crisis. It was awful and terrifying, but at the same time, we had just enough freedom in the West in the 1980's that we could, some of us anyway, live our lives at least somewhat openly. We still had fun, still had some joy through the crisis. But there was plenty of sorrow and fear, too. What often bothers me is how some younger members of the community don't seem to know, or much worse, don't seem to want to know, what it was like for us. This manifests itself in many little ways, from "Why would you want to watch a sad gay movie about AIDS?" to "I can't believe you weren't out to your parents" and on and on. Shows like this are very important. Do I only want to watch sad movies and shows about our past struggles? Of course not. I love seeing lighter, happier representations of LGBTQ people, too. But I don't want what we went through to be denied or forgotten, either. And never forget that the struggle for acceptance and equality isn't over and it never will be. Anyone who thinks it is is just fooling themselves. Thanks again for these reactions, guys.

I have to admit that before I found out about and watched this series, I had little to no interest in the history of LGBTQ people, despite being pan myself for the past 2 years. It's shows like this with very sobering themes that made me truly stop and research our history. Now, I'm trying to get my straight friends to understand the importance of our history all the way up until now, although they are less than enthusiastic. I'm truly sorry for all the hardship you went through, and even more so for our generation's ignorance to your suffering. Thank you for sharing this. ❤

@@megb8763 Thanks for your response! I was one of the lucky ones as far as the AIDS crisis goes--somehow, by pure, dumb luck, I managed to dodge the bullet. The stress, anxiety, etc. were all still there, but I didn't have to directly deal with the illness itself. But so many, many were not as lucky and suffered greatly with this horrible disease and were even demonized for their illness. The U.S. government at the time chose to ignore the epidemic. It's great to hear that you have become interested in LGBTQ history! I don't know if you are in the U.S. or elsewhere, but part of the reason the history is important, and here I refer to the LGBTQ civil rights struggle, not just the AIDS crisis, is that there are forces who right now are working to take us back in time and undo all the gains that have been made over the past few decades. There are also way too many places in the world where LGBTQ people are still living in societies where they must hide and where they are in grave danger every day just for being themselves. We must recognize that the struggle is ongoing. Best to you, and thanks for your awareness and advocacy!
@megb8763
@megb8763 8 месяцев назад
@bluefriend62 It was already hard for me to comprehend how those in power could go as far as to let the people they should protect and advocate for die. But hearing from you, someone who actually experienced the fear and suffering of that period in time, it feels even more surreal. I myself can barely stand random comments from a random people, let alone virtually have an entire country against you because of something you didn't choose to have. Again, I'm so sorry for you having to go through that, and hopefully, those who are in power now can see the way the world is going and correct its course as to avoid something awful like this happening again. I can't stress enough how hearing from you has helped me understand so much about our community and history. I only hope that I can find other pieces of media with the same ability of starting conversations, educating young people, and giving us a small sense of pride at how far we've come since. Thank you ❤️

Your comment is spot on 💯! I'm fast approaching 60 years old and encountered times having the same convo with the youth in the community today. If you haven't seen it, then watch Madonna’s current Celebration tour AIDS tribute performance of "Live To Tell". It's posted all over RU-vid from her European leg of the tour. It's a beautiful tribute to her friends and the many many faces who lost their lives to AIDS. It brought back so many bittersweet memories and emotions. I and many others Lived It and are lucky we're still here To Live To Tell. It's been 30 yrs since I lost my first partner. He was ten years older then me and I learned so much from him. He was my first love and first of many beautiful memories going back to 1984 when we met. He would leave me love notes, and the last one before he passed was on a Keith Haring post card. When the performance briefly stopped and Madonna bowed at Keith, the floodgates erupted. 😭 A day doesn't go by that I don't think of him. RIP Never forget 💔💫✌️😢✨️🎇

The fact that Hawk admitted to his mom that he had someone and told Tim that he was home with him is a big deal. Hawk solely likes impersonal sex, so it suggests Hawk might be catching feelings for Tim. Hawk reminds me of Brian Kinney from QAF in a lot of ways. That monologue to his dad especially. ICONIC! I'm reading the book, and I highly recommend it.
@TinaOe
@TinaOe 8 месяцев назад
Oh I can see what you mean re: Brian! They both have that convinction that their worldview is the one right way to deal with things and seemingly no shame about their sexuality, but obviously due to circumstances/the time period they live in that manifests itself pretty differently in terms of how they openly portray themselves
@mandipandi303
@mandipandi303 8 месяцев назад
@@TinaOe Exactly. There's a couple of scenes in episode 1 that I could almost hear Brian delivering verbatim. The one where Hawk kind of answers Tim's questions about Hawk's politics, belief in god, and first lover. He congratulates Tim for somewhat turning away from god and tries telling Tim that Tim does know him (when that's obviously not true). Also, the scene in the bar where Tim gets upset at the idea of Hawk marrying Lucy, and Hawk tells him that they got away with making the straight people look like fools at the party, but that's all it could be. It's all so Brian. And let's face it, Hawk isn't wrong to be careful, and Brian is 100% valid for wanting his life that way (though Brian shouldn't be as cruel about it).
@davidcwitkin6729
@davidcwitkin6729 8 месяцев назад
Totally agree. The fact that Hawk is so much like Brian is proof that the 50s were a lot more like the 90s than people would care to admit. We've come further in the last 30 years than we have in the last 2 millennia. We have a lot to lose by backsliding.
@mandipandi303
@mandipandi303 8 месяцев назад
@@davidcwitkin6729 One hundred percent! There are actually studies that show that any time social progress is made, there's a significant time of backsliding against said progress to undermine it in response. We can NEVER be complacent! Fellow Travelers will show it.

I really appreciate the work the two of you are doing for the queer community. I was a scared little gay boy in the South during the HIV/AIDS crisis. I had no community of friends until I was 18 because in the South it was deadly to be out. I had to move to a big city to find my people. I have lost all of my friends to either AIDS or suicide except for one. Being an old gay, I have trouble with understanding all the new words for genders and sexuality. The two of you have helped me with some of that. I am so proud of both of you.

With each episode I watch of Fellow Travelers, the more I feel this is one of the most important shows for LBGTQ+ youth to watch, I could be a grumpy old man but young people now days while still having to deal with hardships have it way more easy then folks back it the day and I really think some take it for granted. However there is still a long way to go.

The attention to detail that has been put into this series is phenomenal. From the styling to the location sets. It really takes the viewer to the time periods they are in at the moment(s). So well-done. At 62 years old I can relate to the 80s references and can only imagine the late 50s and early 60s looked as they are portrayed. But, having studied and read about the whole McCarthy era, I can assure you that there is still some shocking details to come in the series. Can't wait!

The lead actors are brilliant and it is definitely a great show, but it is so hard to watch. I get so emotional, have to stop the video to take a breath. Can't stop thinking of trying to survive in that atmosphere of suspicion, bias, hatred towards anyone who didn't adhere to the so called "societal norms". Even today, though a lot of progress has been made, there is still so much stigma and intolerance directed at the queer community. So many societies readily accept cruelty and violence, but god forbid allowing people to LOVE whomever they want. Guess religion has a lot to do with this by poisoning people's minds (Tim's character is a good example). Blows my mind to think of how many lives were lost or lived in misery, always afraid and pretending.

13:24 this is true, i live in a country where the penalty for being gay is up to 3 years in prison and mine isn't even the worst of countries that see us pretty much exactly how queer people are viewed in the show. It's not too bad in terms of legalities here(no one will report you to the police or anything) but the people are really homophobic, and when they do think someone might be gay and they want to punish him for it, it quickly gets extreme and ugly. I'm happy that a lot of countries are now accepting of lgbtq+ folks but y'all need to remember that the fight is not over, it's not over here, in my country and ones like it, but it's also not over there in countries apparently supportive, with all that's going on with trans rights in America and the amount of idiots rising up again painting queer people with all sorts of words, the fight still goes on y'all. Never forget who paved the way for what we have now but also never forget those who still live in the same situation.
