Tekken is all about matchup knowledge , simple as that . If u dont know matchup , any charater is dangerous and vice versa . No need to make 45 min stories about it :D
"if you don't know the matchup, any character is dangerous, and vice versa" What exactly do you mean by "vice versa" here? If we swap the pieces, you're just repeating yourself: "If you don't know the matchup, any character is dangerous, and [any character is dangerous if you don't know the matchup.]" If that's not your intent, then are you trying to say "If you know the matchup, characters are no longer dangerous?" Because that's demonstrably false - there wouldn't be much of a top-level scene if it was true, unless you're also proposing that all the top players don't know matchups.
Aight so first off, you’re wrong. Having matchup knowledge is important, but having a good gameplan, learning your opponent’s gameplan and adapting properly are equally important. Second, how the fuck is this relevant? This is a tourney top 8, they’re past the point where matchup knowledge really matters as a factor. Finally, are you stupid?

We have a spot in the netherlands where alot of dutch players grind offline Tekken every weekend and Sin is always there. He trains alot and also gets coaching from an old skool dutch yoshi main called kyoko manjii who used to be really strong during T5/6/Tag2. Im really happy for Sin since he is really passionate and wants to travel the world. 100% gunna see more of him in the future

As a non-yoshi player i literally just got reminded that i could implement a full crouch game with my character with this breakdown 😂 have to remind myself that i have one and im not properly utilizing it
I really like how you said that bringing Yoshi's and bear's into the mix adds a fun flavour to Tekken because like... I'd like to think I'm pretty easygoing and carefree 99.99% of the time, but for whatever reason playing Tekken 8 changes something in me and it just like, it gets to me sometimes. The overall vibe of the whole community is so negative. People are always complaining on Twitter, log in to any of the fight lounges and you'll just see people calling everyone else trash and getting into fights, people plug and one-and-done constantly I've been so desperate to inject the fun back into Tekken 8 that I've been doing anything I can to remind myself of the old days of Tekken, going so far as to make my character select theme the character select theme from Tekken 1 (it's terrible) It's such a fun game when things click and when it feels like you're doing well and adapting accordingly so I want to love it, but a lot of it the experience is getting streamrolled by random gambling mixups > teabag (it's a natural combo)
The placement of the spins from Sin is really good. The only out of pocket spin was that one in the first match he did randomly when he pulled off his comeback. The other was after a dropped combo at the end of the last match which he’s probably used to people mashing on panic wake up.
he is clearly just checking his reaction to fc to take advantage of that. If the bear litteraly didn't change how he play normally then it can't be conditioning
@@thezs1832Just cuz u dont get the desired doesn't mean he wasnt conditioning. Also imo conditioning and gathering data are two sides of the same coin
@@sstanford1331 well imo conditionning is based on the opponent reacting to what you do so he is suppose to change his behavior, if we say people are conditionning even when they doesn't get anything from it well then conditionning apply to litteraly eveything and using the term become meaningless. That's just my take tho i get it people can have different way of thinking about it
You say this is unserious but idk man. There’s a lot of genius play here. Both of these players are locked in and aren’t really goofing around. Just some really good Tekken.
people talk about Yoshi being broken, I see a player, Sin, who played like a god. For me Yoshi is a strong character but not broken for me top 10/12 in a tier list is in between S and A, A+ is right.
I missed this, been out of the PhiDX rotation lately. T8 being my first serious Tekken and being a Yoshi main struggling to get out of purples... I'm here for a YoshiDX arc
Tekken 8 is such a slugfest, these "troll" characters are inherently not as far off from the metagame. Funny do stuff works better in a game where everybody wants to be proactive. I like the new Elements of t8 but imo they could buff movement a bit and make some mixups less scarry.
Always have been. Not sure about pre T4 era, but since my time onwards, both bears and yoshi were always hot potato, bottom of the barrel chars. They've always been top tier in fun, but mechanically, they were easily the most neglected/poorly balanced chars. And that remained true for bears forever, even in T7, where they were objectively the weakest chars, and they've only stopped being too much of a joke in T8. They still retain their legacy "joke char" weaknesses, but have actually gained something in return to compensate. Yoshi's situation was never that dire, though he was doodoo in T5-Tag2. He started feeling like an actual char in T7, while retaining most of his identity, up to the point he became a bit *too* overally strong (though it could be argued that this was a general T7 problem). Not that this ever stopped players from playing those chars, nor succeeding with them, quite the contrary. But if we're being fair/objective to them, those chars have been considered "gimmick" chars for a reason, and that's because their fundamental tekken tools were trash.
@@sstanford1331No. I’ve always had a hard time against yoshi and bears. I guess NorCal was a different scene. Solid players for all characters. I mean Bronson Tran won tournaments with Ganryu. Yoshi was good in T6.
Objectively, these are low tier characters, but low tier is not the same as gimmick. Gimmick would be like a Mokujin, which shouldn’t even be in the game.
@@jorgesmith2000 Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree on that, it's a matter of wording. The fact is, bears and Yoshi were historically lowtiers, thus they relied more on so-called gimmicks, which in turn made them "gimmick chars". The fact that they somewhat play by their own rules, mostly out of necessity, can be an argument in itself. Also, I don't get the Mokujin hate, let the man be. He's the most tekken char there is.
Hey coach Phi are you still planning to release those RDC Xiaoyu coaching videos, I think i want to pick her up but I could use a beginner guide. Thanks!
Yeah any character can get full launch against whiffed Flash. As a Yoshi main at mid-high ranks (fujin) I throw flash out pretty much only if I *know* my opponent is going to mash jabs from neutral (or -1 or -2). If a Yoshi crutches on flash, literally just being patient and watching the Yoshi panic flash is your cue to get a full launch combo (easy 80+ damage for most characters). Flash is a tool to punish opponents who are hyper aggressive. Patience is your friend against Yoshimitsu. He's a counter-attack type character and has poor engagement skills otherwise.
i’m highly considering quitting tekken. idk for whatever reason everybody seems to be like pros when i play online and i don’t even play ranked anymore. i managed to reach raijin but ever since my losses are significantly more than my wins. not to mention even lower ranks seem to be playing like pros. it’s very discouraging at this point and i just get frustrated
Trust me the best you can do is take a break from online and/or try to improve offline. Maybe punishment training in practice mode, maybe watching videos about your character, maybe just stop tekken all together for a bit
They took Yoshi and gave him literally everything, I haven’t been able to come with anything he doesn’t have, while still being the best in class for many areas. He has so much… Healing of Jun, Evasion of Lili, parries of Raven, Range of Victors sword attacks, Keep out of Lee without the high execution requirements, one of the best oki tech trappers in the game, he has a full grapple game with stance grapples and unbreakable grabs, tricky ranged lows like Alisa, amazing wall pressure and wall splats. Has combo damage that is on par with Jin’s CD1 into CD2 combo+wall+rage+counter hit. Yoshi can do that damage with just a counter hit and wall, doesn’t need rage and gets the benefit of high crushing for his -13 on block mid launch and doesn’t need the just frame inputs to get that kind of damage. The god move that is flash which is the fastest in the game by far and it counter hit launches, heals and can be used as a combo filler, he also has some of the best tracking moves in the game, one of the best stances in the game that crushes lows and mitigates damage due to being airborne while also have unique stance grabs and amazing tracking and chip heavy moves. I know PhiDX says he doesn’t like to go low, that’s pretty true, but that doesn’t mean his lows are bad, he just doesn’t need to use a lot of them to win, not when you have an unblockable launching low that is as fast as any other launching low but can’t be blocked. This makes this low an amazing move for oki tech traps. So he has good lows, great mids, and great highs. So I’m wondering, what does Yoshi actually lack as a whole? When I look up the weaknesses to other characters I get general things like “Bad damage, poor pressure/poking, lacking an I15 launcher, poor momentum, bad punishing moves etc etc” but with Yoshi I just get solutions to specific moves. So it seems like he doesn’t really have any major weaknesses, it’s just about whether you have the hyper specific knowledge for this particular match up. He seems so clearly overpowered to me, he just has way too much going on and doesn’t seem to be particularly bad at anything, I can’t think of many characters like that, even in Tekken 8. Yoshi even benefits from the aggressiveness meta since he has some of the best counter hit tools in the game, along with some of the best keep out in the game, and if you play defensive you get hit with unblockables. He has answer for everything and it often seems to one of the best in games. Even all rounder characters like Jin don’t have this many things going for him. Yoshi even gets broken hitboxes on his grasshopper stance. The dude has everything going for him it seems. He even has unblockable venom spit that isn’t punishable on whiff, it can only be ducked.
@@WertzMS You’re surprised that on a video about analysing characters that I used a lot of words to analyse a character? It’s not even that long, it’s a single paragraph. It baffles me how little people are capable of reading these days, the only way they can learn something is if they can lazily watch video having someone verbally explain it.
@@User6-q9s it’s the most annoying replies I get. It’s really annoying to spend time thinking through an argument and analyse of a character then spend time writing it up just to have some respond with “I’m not reading all that” or “It’s so long! Too many words!”. If you don’t wanna read it then don’t. I don’t wanna hear people complain about their own problems with reading. I know you’re saying it’s a joke, but the overwhelming majority of people who write comments like yours are serious about it. So yeah, it pissed me off a bit.
I've always said Yoshi is basically a UFO, but in Tekken form lol. He can create the weirdest situations and especially move in so many more ways that aren't really possible for the rest of the cast.
The whole 'joke'-character is a myth. How are the bears cheaper og 'jokier' than say Yoshimitsu with all his trolling, or Alisa with her chainsaws, or Xiaoyu who evades everything, or Zafina who is glued to the ground in her stances? And Raven with his teleports and clones? The fact is that over half the cast of Tekken is just cheap and have bizarre, cheezy moves, and Tekken 8 just made that even more hardcore. Either half the game is joke-characters or none are.
I mean look at their intros, their outros, their heat attacks, their rage arts… they’re obviously not meant to be taken seriously😭 You honestly mean to tell me you look at the rolling Karate bears with the same level of seriousness as the other gimmick/stance characters you listed?💀
It used to, but it was a bit too much, considering how much Yoshi gotta spin. Yoshi's bottom tier movement makes him reliant on the spin and MED cancels. Of course, that means he can evade situations where most characters can't, but spins can always be baited out and they always cost health.
His sidestep is as bad as bears, if not worse, though probably a bit better than jack's. If you made his spin too detrimental to him, you'd need to buff his ss a bit.
@@Nausicaa-oj1gf Exactly, most people don't understand how trash Yoshi's movement is. At least Jack makes it up with a solid backdash, Yoshi can barely move without his unique evasion shite.
If you can't block that low can it be low parried? If he's in range it doesn't seem like there are many options to deal with it other than a low jab maybe.
by "that low" i assume you mean the unblockable sword sweep, and no you cannot parry sword sweep, its unblockable, and its a weapon move, you cant parry unblockables and you also cant low parry weapons either. You either stay on the ground if you think they will use it or if they are late you can hopkick
Tekken 8 is dumb for having this type of moves and the mixups of high unblockables that reversal break. Which need you to do a specific move and only that move to escape that. The defensive move being risky or clunky to execute.
@@Perry_Talion mixups are a necessary evil in fighting games, some mixups are better than others but if you want to beat them you have to know their options and your own, and then play accordingly. the sword sweep has a ton of weaknesses that also hurt it, it has very little reach and has a lot of recovery on whiff, and all guard break highs are duckable and launchable
@@MidrollAdsMost lows have high recovery on whiff, it's still an unseeable low launcher that's also unblockable. It's much more than a mixup, it's straight up overpowered especially against a character like Kazuya who doesn't have an orbital or hopkick
@@shaghilathar3588 Homing moves will always clip Yoshi while spinning, if he's in range. The way he moves diagonically though, means he can actually manage to evade anything in general, especially on his 3rd+ spin. But if Yoshi managed to space out your big-fat-homing-safe-mid with a single spin, it means you didn't space it properly and just threw it out. So, get whiff punished mlol.
