Now that's a raw performance! Melanie was an unbridled artist who didn't want to conform to record company standards. She's singing about how "they" made her change her song, her sound, her style to meet top 40 pop music standards of the 60s/70s. Her greatest song was a gospel inspired telling of her experience at Woodstock. "Lay Down, Lay Down" was recorded with the Edwin Hawkins Singers who turned out many of the Civil rights protests in the mid to late 60s... Phenomenal musical group!
You've gained a 65 yr old Aussie hippie as a new fan been deep diving into all your stuff and you haven't done a reaction I've disliked and you love all my favorite songs but the biggest thing for me is the love that shines out of both of you your relationship reminds me of mine until he died heaps of love from this old Aussie to both of you and your loved ones
“Brand New Key”…makes me want to roller skate, but maybe not a great idea for my 77 year-old body?? ❤️🎶 Does anyone else remember “Skateland” in Northridge, California?
Melanie Safka is an extraordinarily talented lady. Please do everyone a favour and react to her track "Lay Down: (Candles in the Rain)" with the Edwin Hawkins Singers (a very famous Gospel group at that time). No autotune, just spectacular singing from Melanie and the Choir.
I love Melanie!!! She has been since I first heard her in about 1969. You should react to Candles, better known as Lay Down. She wrote it after performing at Woodstock.
I remember Melanie's songs growing up in the 70's. She had hits such as "Brand New Key", "Ruby Tuesday", "Beautiful People", "Ring The Living Bell", "The Nickel Song", "Bitter Bad", "Together Alone", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" etc. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" was inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.
Melanie just passed away (Jan 23, 2024) at age 76. Have you reacted to "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) with the Edwin Hawkins Singers yet? Great song. Youll want to make sure it's the full length and not single version... like 7 or 9 minutes. When youve finished that there was also her sexually-suggestive hit "Brand New Key."
When she left her record company they tried everything to ruin her. If she came out with a new album they would make one up with the song that was not good enough to be on her old albums so people would buy them and say how bad they were. She was very vocal about how much the record company tried to sexualize her.
This song has always been a vibe. Melanie's best song, in my opinion. Listen to Babe Rainbow, next by her. Melanie is a great writer. She has a lot of great songs.
Another shot at the parasitic infection that is the music industry. I really like where independent music is headed. You got a guitar, mic and a song and we have a stool. This reminds me of open mic nights back in the late 60s early 70s
I don't get why reactors are nearly always being recommended to first try her songs Brand New Key and Look What They've Done To My Song. When her best song, by FAR, is Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) w/Edwin Hawkins Singers.
I was under the impression that this song was written to a band called the wurzels who recorded a version of the song Brand New Key, and called it “ I’ve Got a Brand New Combine Harvester ( which was awful ). Luv ya
Wow, I'd long forgotten how truly poignant these lyrics are. Actually, honestly, I may have never noticed it getting caught in the ''pop'' of it. 50 years later, I got it...
