Spinal Tap 1984 epitomizes the golden era of the 80s. Watching this movie is pure delight, as it never fails to evoke genuine laughter. MTV used to play an extended promotion for Spinal Tap when this film came out. I had NO idea it as satire. I as ten at the time and would watch MTV for hours a day, hypnotized by all the bizarre, flashy videos. I thought Spinal Tap was just another metal band that was popular at the time like Ozzy, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, etc. I had no idea. Then, later in the year, my dad rented This is Spinal Tap, and I said, "Dad, I thought you hated heavy metal." He said, "This is a comedy." I had no idea what I was in for. It was absolutely hysterical. When I got a bit older, I began playing lead guitar in a series of metal bands on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. I learned that Spinal Tap was, indeed, real. I saw so many Spinal Tap moments in that silly scene. So the movie may be satire, but what it satirized was very real. That's why it's so funny. All of these bands were trying to outdo each other. I probably knew fifty guitarists in Hollywood named Jay. They were all different, and yet they were all the same guy. They looked and sounded exactly the same, all uncreative wannabes. Bassists, like Derek Smalls, were always the odd man out. You need them in your rhythm section, and if anything, they tend to be the philosopher of the band. Drummers are just baboons on crack. Combustible, unreliable animals. And frontmen are just egomaniacs who duke it out with the rest of the band but have a real conflict with the guitarist.

Watched it opening night with 3 friends. There were only 7 people in the theater, and we were the only ones laughing!!!!!!!

The trailer just straight up puts in most of the big jokes in the movie with no setup

Was just realizing that the dialogue about "This goes up to 11" came long before the "It's got electrolytes" debate in "Idiocracy." :)

Fun fact the cast from the spinal trap played the characters from small soldiers as the gorgonites
