I will say this, if this game was never made, Kojima would bever have been motivated to make his Metal Gear sequel. So that's got to count for something.

I had this game as a kid, but couldn't beat it because I couldn't figure out how to beat one of the final--not the FINAL one; I never got that far--bosses. There was a trick to it I couldn't figure out how to do correctly. It wasn't until a few years ago when I FINALLY beat it. That being said, I still loved played the game. It was fun, despite not being a "true" Metal Gear.

For historical context, the original _Metal Gear_ came out in 1987 in Japan and a year later in America. This came out in 1990, only a few months before the release of the "proper" sequel, _Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake._

I only played the 'Legacy' collection for PS3, so it's interesting to see how apocryphal the Nintendo versions got, and we already got the sprite for some screwy lookin muscle guy that's ranked lieutenant. I won't spoil what I just read, but in the manual, and only in the manual, it says that the leader of the enemy forces is named Higharolla Kockamamie. No, seriously!

I like how, when you compare Snake's Revenge and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, you can see they both took inspiration from Metal Gear 1, but both fleshed out different parts. Imagine if the Metal Gear series developed in Snake's Revenge way instead of MG2.

Hideo Kojima said himself that he likes the game, and I like it too. It's well designed and the reasons so many people bash it aside from the fact that it isn't cannon are ridiculous.

I think "having nothing to do with Kojima" is slightly untrue- (paraphrasing cus comment section) the game came to be because one of the developers for the game met Kojima in Japan after playing the first Metal Gear game, asking if Kojima would ever do a sequel. When Kojima said no, they got his blessing to do their own sequel. THEN seeing how bad it was, it inspired Kojima to then go and make the REAL Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Oh snakes revenge!! This game it's pretty good! The music so kickass and the difficulty it's... weird....and gameplay tends to vary between overhead view to platformer and for me it's better than the nes first one(Wich i played via emulation years before o played this one)...i can play the first level without being noticed

This was literally my first introduction to the Metal Gear series, and the first MG game I ever played. That was before MGS launched on Playstation. For a supposedly 'bad' Metal gear game, it's still a lot of fun. There's a few areas where you can cheese knock-outs (something young me figured out pretty quickly) to stock up on rations that the guards might randomly drop. This is because of the fixed-spawn locations for enemies on some screens. Just keep punching and they spawn INTO your first. Lovely. Also, it's very possible to get through large chunks of the game entirely stealthily, including that entire opener, but it's necessary to know the enemy patrol patterns first. In the areas where you walk INTO the path of a search light, you need to line yourself up on the left-side of the path (the brown area) and run STRAIGHT DOWN. You'll barely clip the light but won't trigger an alarm.

I remember reading in an issue of Nintendo Power this was the game that actually got Hideo Kojima to make Metal Gear 2 as someone working on Snake's Revenge at Konami told him they were working on a sequel to the NES Metal Gear, but wished Kojima would make a REAL sequel...which led to Metal Gear Solid and beyond.

Not quite. He made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Then when 3D game consoles came out he was intrigued at the prospects of more cinematic story telling. To get use to the new stuff he started making a 3D reimagining of Metal Gear 2 as it was considered the definitive stealth game. Through development this became the Metal Gear: Solid we all know, with some features and set pieces from Solid Snake still being used, like the staircases, or the radar and codec screen, or characters like Roy Campbell returning.
