Cannon Films. Ninjas. Insane plot. Ridiculous fights. What more do you want from a movie? This was our first Sho Kosugi film and it won't be our last. We lost our minds during the finale of this because the movie went completely off the rails. It's a must watch.

One of my favorite ninja movie tropes is that they run around in full black camouflage *_during the day._* For stealth. Even though it only makes them highly visible. I can barely believe it was an actual Japanese guy making these movies, but I guess he knew what people wanted at the time, and he certainly delivered. I'll never forget that "shuriken only work if you throw it in their eye" bit. Instead of just applying poison to the tips, which makes much more sense. I might call Sho's movies "aggressively nonsensical."

Fun Facts: The Kuji-Kiri are the Ninja's Nine Levels of Power. They are 1. Rin - Strength of mind and body. 2. Pyo - Direction of energy. 3. Toh - Harmony with the universe. 4. Sha - Healing of self and others. 5. Kai - Premonition of danger. 6. Jin - Knowing the thoughts of others. 7. Retsu - Mastery of time and space. 8. Zai - Control of the elements of nature. and 9. Zen - Enlightenment. The film was originally to be shot in Los Angeles, but the necessary permits, police protection, fire marshals and myriad logistics fees would be taking up a bigger and bigger part of the film's budget. The Utah Film Commission was trying to get Cannon Films to start producing films in their state and a representative promised no permits, location fees or union deals as well as lower salaries for local crews. The commission's assurances persuaded Cannon to switch filming to Salt Lake City. Menahem Golan called an emergency meeting one day at the Cannon offices in regards to the film which he called a mess. During the meeting, it was Golan who came up with the films' opening prologue that adds more depth to the story. Kane Kosugi plays Kane Osaki, the son of Cho Osaki, who is played by Shô Kosugi. Kane actually is Sho's son. His younger brother, Shane Kosugi, appears uncredited as Cho's first son. Ninjutsu was "the art of invisibility". The martial art is also known as Ninpo and Ninjitsu-Ryu. Shô Kosugi is an actual Ninpo practicioner and was also the movie's technical advisor and fight co-choreographer. Kosugi starred in numerous other 1980s ninja movies and appeared in each of the films in Golan-Globus' Cannon "Ninja" series but playing different characters. Director Sam Firstenberg said in an interview that his "first decision right away was not to follow in the steps of the Hong Kong flicks, but rather to approach the movie as a straight Hollywood action movie with a martial arts slant, and the Ninjitsu mysticism the icing on the cake." Despite being the second entry in the Ninja trilogy, this film has nothing to do with the film that preceded it (Enter the Ninja (1981)) nor the one that followed it (Ninja III: The Domination (1984)), other than the fact that they starred Shô Kosugi (but playing different characters). The final rooftop fight scene between Shô Kosugi and the villain took two weeks to shoot. Director Sam Firstenberg in an interview said this is because there were many effects, pyrotechnics, mechanical rigging, safety considerations, elaborate camera positioning (including hanging 20 stories high outside the building), and helicopter shots. Shô Kosugi personally crafted many of the weapons in the film. The second of three "Ninja" movies in the Golan-Globus Cannon ninja series. The others were Enter the Ninja (1981) and Ninja III: The Domination (1984). All three were unrelated in terms of story. Cannon also went on to make American Warrior (1985), which spawned four sequels. The unrated version of the film features the infamous blood splatter from Graden spaying all over from a clear rubber tube that is completely visible. One of the major reasons this version of the film is more popular. The violence was dramatically cut for its original theatrical release which still garnered '18' certificates around the world. In the documentary, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films, director Sam Firstenberg stated that this film was "very heavy on philosophical ideas and drama" which may have been one of the reasons the first cut of the film was a total failure prompting a re-conception of both the plot and the movie itself by Menahem Golan, who had previously directed, Enter The Ninja. The film's budget was roughly around 700, 000 dollars. The film was shot in 48 days. First "Ninja" film directed by Sam Firstenberg for Golan-Globus' Cannon Films. Firstenberg who would go on to direct the sequel, Ninja III: The Domination (1984), as well as American Warrior (1985) and American Ninja 2: The Confrontation (1987). According to Mark Helfrich, who was also the films' editors who appeared in the Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films, that the first assembly of the film that was edited together, "made no sense" the way it was shot. Which led Menahem Golan to redo the films' plot and added the prologue that opens the film in which Sho Kosugi's family is massacred by a Ninja clan and decides to go America with his only remaining sibling at Brayden's urging despite a warning from his mother in the film about "not trusting him" Steve Lambert, the film's stuntman, virtually played the entire Brayden/Silver Devil Masked Ninja himself as Arthur Roberts didn't have the physical ability to do everything that was required for the role as well as the fact that he and Sho Kosugi rehearsed and choreographed all of the major action sequences together. Lambert also plays a few of the ninjas in the opening prologue and is in the fight in the park's jungle gym. This is the first film in the trilogy in which a Ninja has displayed another power that isn't physical but mental. Brayden uses the power of hypnosis to seduce Cathy into joining him to get Shane after witnessing him murder his grandmother in Cho's dojo/Gallery which also enhances her aggression within her. In Ninja 3: The Domination, the Black Ninja uses black magic to not only possess the girl and use her body to control and manipulate her enhancing her aggression and sexuality but to also use mind control and spiritual witchcraft to control his enemies. These could be apart of the nine levels of power established in Enter the Ninja or other powers that were never fully developed or explained in the original film. Director Sam Firstenberg says in the Blu-ray commentary for the film that the original cut was around two hours long but Cannon told them to cut it down to 90 minutes, mostly to have more theatrical screenings with the shorter running time. Not much is known about any deleted scenes, but Firstenberg says that in the part where Braden first enters the building there was a decapitation scene which was cut. He also mentioned how he wasn't sure whether Caifano had a death scene which was cut out during re-editing or not. There are several promotional stills which show some deleted scenes (including some additional action parts) and the theatrical trailer shows a few shots of deleted scenes like Braden slicing off Cathy's dress, and a couple extra parts from the ending action sequence which show armed soldiers arriving and entering the building and Braden shooting an arrow towards some of them who are shooting at him from the roof. According to Producer David Womark, who was also the films' second unit cinematographer who appeared in the Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films, stated that Menahem Golan wanted a sequel and said "Here's seven hundred thousand dollars to make a Ninja movie. By the way, the script isn't too good." Menahem Golan was director of the first film, Enter the Ninja (1981)), and was to direct this one also, but shortly before production was to start he decided to turn over directing chores to Sam Firstenberg. Golan did remain as producer, however. Sho Kosugi played the film deadly serious and it is noticeable in several scenes such as the Van Chase, in which he did most of the stunts himself. In the end credits of the movie Don Shanks is credited as "Dan Shanks." Producer Menahem Golan wanted the story for this sequel to take place in America, since its predecessor, Enter the Ninja (1981), took place in the Philippines. The name of the art gallery was "CHO Oriental Art". Although the scenes set in America were filmed in Salt Lake City, it is never explicitly stated in the movie where they are supposed to take place. At least one trailer for the film, however, says that the action takes place in Los Angeles. According to the credits and various promotional interviews with Sho Kosugi in 1983, Eddie Tse did most of the "devil mask" Ninja double work. Ashley Ferrare's debut. Ashley Ferrare is of Italian ancestry. In a video interview Sam Firstenberg showed the original Silver Devil mask and stated it was the only prop he had kept from any of his movies.

I got one for you guys: "DOA: Dead or Alive" (2006) Directed by Corey Yuen ("No Retreat, No Surrender" The Transporter") and starring Jamie Pressley, Eric Roberts and this kid, Kane Kosugi. It's based on a popular 90's fight game famous for having options to adjust the chest jiggle on the female characters. And here's the kicker: it's actually good. It's very silly, but far more often than not, it's on purpose and great fun. Nobody really knows about it because it never got a theatrical release, but for my money it's better than Mortal Kombat

29:14 call back to Dragon Sound's "Against The Ninja" was chefs kiss. Also, the iron claws/spikes at 28:48 are called Shuko. They made them for hands (and feet) and were used as fork assists to carry large bails of hay/feed for animals on farmlands. When in use for combat/espionage/spying, the ninja could wear them and use to climb tubular trees (similar to the way conventional cable men climb telephone poles), they were used to claw out flesh, and when hands were placed together weaving the spikes, it created an iron stop against swords. This is where myth of ninjas catching swords with their bare hands came from because they couldn't easily be seen. This was a secret weapon attributed to the Togakure-Ryu Schools of Ninjutsu. The more you know ;)

Samurai gave boys a sword when they were young, they also presented a favourite toy, if the boy chose the sword he was trained in martial arts, if he chose the toy he would learn math, science, medicine etc. Samurai didn't raise their kids to be working class, they were professionals and teachers. Sho is a Samurai but it was the 80s and ninjas were all the rage.

Hi Jason. This was the first R rated movie I ever watched. I think I was nine years old, and it shaped the way I thought about restricted movies, ninjas, and frankly life itself. I haven't seen the movie since. But, there were two memories from almost 40 years ago that stuck with me: the ninja star embedded in the kid's skull and the leg slashing from below (which happens at the end of the movie). Thanks for resurrecting those innocent childhood memories!
