Your theory is right, but the example is bit of a strech. Why compare cortana, why not Google Assistant or Alexa? Also co-pilot is still new and we don't know whether it will be sucessful or not. A better example could be ChatGPT but even that is not as much used as Google Assistant or Alexa at this point of time.

I still think watches are the superior form factor. Health sensors are something that I think should be more prevalent in tech so that's why I typically prefer watches rather than something like this. In my ideal little world most people would have cellular smartwatches as their daily drivers. If my Apple Watch Ultra could be set up completely independent from a phone, it would dramatically change my relationship with technology. I also think smartphones should become the next primary desktop PC for most people, many flagships and even mid-range phones are more than powerful enough for the regular person anyways so just let ALL of them be dockable like with DeX and let them utilize pass through power to not wear out the battery when docked. Just a couple of unrealistic ideas that I like to stew on.

As a photographer I am obviously excited about the innovation of a global shutter sensor, but honestly, it won't really change anything for 90% of use cases, especially in stills photography. Only in edge cases will the average non sports photographer have any issue with a rolling shutter, which makes the trade off in terms of sensitivity, noise and resolution non appealing for most users. At least this early generation does not do anything for me at the end of the day, but the geek in my still is excited.

I consider that it should not compete against a cell phone but rather be an accessory. I imagine it in the work world that helps to see elements with which one works, providing advice and recognizing elements, and as a designer who recognizes what one sees and proposes proposals. that he sends to the cell phone, that he makes tours of architectural work or pays attention to construction details, providing solutions, or either as a lawyer or doctor where he can provide information about what he observes, serving as a small advisor.

The Humane AI pin kinda reminds me of the Star Trek comm badge. Except it's quite a bit more clunky and much larger. EDIT: Also, it kinda seems like this would be better if it were a Bluetooth-capable device and would run ChatGPT locally, and only use mobile data when absolutely needed. That way it could be made smaller. A simple combination of three buttons (one to turn on/off, one for reset, one for initiating communication), antennas, projector, battery, ultrasonic depth sensor (for sensing hand gestures), a microphone and a speaker would work - but without the need for such a powerful processor onboard (since most processing could be done by the connected Smartphone, including the streaming of audio sent to speaker, and the streaming of microphone input as audio to the Smartphone for processing). Could likely take up less space, and be more practical. Also, perhaps with a glove, it could be added to the back of the hand, similar to Babylon 5's "Earth Alliance Hand Link".
@southcoastinventors6583

ChatGPT doesn't run locally but you could MIstral 7B to run locally with a version of machine vision as well a TTS which could all be done on a modern phone. @@southcoastinventors6583 now that's what I call an informed comment, even if not written in the best English. I agree with you on local models but thing is, even Google, Apple or Samsung are being very cautious with this, as most companies don't want to be liable for results, and also, OpenAI has an interest on running this on the cloud for full control and for commercial reasons. So to me it seems the only way they could partner with the big AI name right now specifically, would have to be in the way OpenAI seems to be offering most of its services - on the cloud.

The Humane "product" just goes to show how insanely inefficient the shoulder-rubbing-private-corporate-capitalism actually is. Noone in their right mind should put any money into such a business - it's an obvious flop. The product itself is stupid and could be done by 1 person in a garage and yet some stupid/self-interested person gave them, most likely not their own but their company's money, for this project. I bet that if you looked really well under the covers it's most likely some kind of criminal negligence on the part the the "investor". Yet nobody looks, nobody asks questions and millions of dollars change hands just like that - because the founder(s) are cool to hang around and can pull up nice/funny stories that people at the top find entertaining. So gross. I hanged out a bit with that crowd and the amount of BS those people breath in and out is beyond anything I've ever seen. All the while they "make money" mostly because the credit rates have been ultra-low for the last few decades. There's SO MUCH cheap money in tech and so little progress compared to the spending. Not sure if that's going to change withing our lifetimes though.

They were phased out rather quickly with the advent of the cellphone, but it was still a cool new innovation at that time. @TheFridayCheckout apart from the pricing and the subscription model, I think the Humane pin is a refreshing change in terms of tech being screen free. I guess one branch out direction for tech to take is going screenless to actually engage with the real world more, but somehow people seem to want to be almost wedded to a screen. I agree this seems like a clip on ai assitant, but this is better than carrying around a clunky device that only seems to be getting bigger and heavier? Isn't that what technological design or ideation is about? to try taking things in a new direction instead of just progressively adding refreshes? I don't belong to the group that thinks the metaverse is the next way forward, and hence all things moving in that direction in terms of glasses, headsets etc.

By having a combined experience of over 25 year Apple like them, they should know better about real world use of technology. I think the gist of the AI Pin is on the name of the company - they probably wanted a device that would get us away from the proverbial Black Mirror, not just in its screen form but particularly akin to the TV show of the same name, which presents the problems of humanity's use, consumption and proliferation of media, information, communication and interactions in general, not just between us but with all these gadgets that seem to simplify our lives, but maybe really are just getting us more apart from our true nature or life goals. I, for one, think it may be a product out of its time, either a bit too late to the party to create a trend, or too early when we see how much of a problem our current trend seems to be moving towards.

Maybe with an earpiece to replace radios, a police specific AI with laws and regulations, GPS, real-time bodycam upload, things like that. Just spitballing here... but I think that with some kind of central control unit at HQ, it could be pretty effective.
@holgerwinkler9278

The Ai Pin will be a flop. It is not an alternative design to a smartphone, but to a smartwatch. You can see that from the size, the poor screen, a poor camera and probably a poor battery life. However, the biggest problem will be the existence of a camera in general. This means that the device cannot be used in safety-critical areas or in public spaces due to data protection. It is not for nothing that Google has scrapped its glasses.

The marketing department fucked it up by calling it a "smartphone killer". They became too ambitious with that proposal. It would have been to advertise it as a complement of an smartphone. Yes, it doesn't sounds too glamorous or bombastic but at least you are not lying... At least this can serve a precedent to future products about what and what doesn't works.

For the RISC-V Issue: I guess they would (if the lawmakers' actions go through) need to adopt the Android / AOSP or Chrome / Chromium approach (open-sourcing the bare essentials, then everything else would be closed).

this AI pin is kind of anecdotal for NOT going with "because they are former Apple engineers..." mantra on principle. I mean .. it depends on what they did for Apple .. were they sorting the mail? were they programmers? were they advisors, call centre agents, janitors, designers, inventors? .. Also - just because they were good in one job does not mean they succeed in another ( e.g. Elon Musk, who was lucky buying Tesla .. for a while, but is utterly inept in everything else .. and everything else he touches turns to ash)
@dominikmuller8456
@dominikmuller8456 6 месяцев назад
All in all, I agree with your comment. However, when Elon Musk bought Tesla, it was essentially nothing. In practice, he is essentially the founder of Tesla. And don't forget about SpaceX. We don't know why they no longer work for Apple. Maybe they were so bad that they got fired.

It's worth considering that even if the US gov just concentrated on helping their risc 5 companies to "do better", none of that would matter if those companies were then able to immediately turn around and freely sell/lisence all that tech to China. As far as I know, idea of the sanctions is not to stop China from ever getting to where the US is, but to delay them so the US can be at least a few steps ahead.

One problem with voice assistant is, that you only have 1 bandwidth of information to your brain. These are your eyes. You can read and skim text and images way faster that listen to information. Want an instant prove? Just listen to voice messages that are 5 minutes long compared to a written chat. This limits the response of the AI.
