In the snow, the front engine/front wheel drive Transit (Ecoblue) is even with decent and new winter tires just not very good. This might be better.

Come visit the Ford factory in the USA right outside Kansas City Missouri (Claycomo) that is making the E-Transit (in addition to the ICE powered Transit vans and F150 trucks). You may even be able to get special guided tour if you talk to your Ford Pro contacts.

Kyle, the E-Transit borrows the 68 kWh Mach-E standard range pack, rear motor, and on-board charger. Basically they just shoehorned the components from the Mach-E into the E-Transit to save on engineering costs. That might be why the motor hangs down so low (it's designed for the Mach-E ride height?). It's the same 96S3P NMC chemistry pack made by LG Chem, charge curve seems the same as the Mach-E with that initial timed peak before dropping down. Pretty sure you could swap the packs between an E-Transit and a Mach-E standard range RWD and it would work. Also did you not try the "expand" button with the 4 arrows to get full-screen CarPlay? That works on Mach-E now.

Which is good for the service purposes... But. The E-Transit price here, almost 75 000 euros, is just outrageous! about 20 000 eur more than the normal Ecoblue. Would it sell here, I think not. Even salesmen are sort of reluctant, or maybe they are just depressed of the world situation...

A comment I'd like to make on all your reviews, since you are so into charging... If EV makers started to have better USB-c ports, specifically at least one or two 100 watt USB-c PD 3.0 , a laptop - in addition to a tablet or phone - could be charged directly from that port - no adaptor needed. Would be great for people using the car or truck as a work area, greatly reducing bulk in the cabin and the need for a household plug.

I saw on of these on the streets in New York like 2 or 3 weeks ago. It was white with black trim like most Transits, and no graphics, with the only clue being the "E-Transit" badge on the back. I had to do a triple-take because I didn't know they were on the streets in the US yet!

Pretty sure you need to be able to have a commercial account with Ford. That means you own 5 or more of their vehicles. AutoLine Daily has had some discussions with their folks about it if memory serves.

@@skyemalcolm I don't know about a commercial account, but you would certainly need to go through a commercial dealer. Having never dealt with one it's unclear if you actually need to be a business or anything special, or if the dealership would still sell to a private individual. Just poking around Ford's website it looks like I can configure and order an E-Transit for about $52K...

27:17 That little red car being loaded onto the barge is most likely the captain of the ship. Many husband/wife teams. When the arrive for unloading, they take their little car and go into town to eat, shop, etc.; get a hotel room, etc.

Raise it 4 inches, give it all wheel drive, make sure it has a 6ft. 2-inch interior, cover the entire floor with a "thin" battery that will yield a 400-500 mile range, then it will become the most popular RV conversion van ever.

Freeboard is the tendancy of the wind's trying to blow a van or boat sideways. It was a big problem with the early VW bus and Ford Econoline van. Automakers have compensated with better suspension designs, but the best countermeasure for freeboard is having a heavy battery pack under the floor. It means the electric version holds the road in severe crosswinds much better than the ICE version of the same van.

Are you sure about the towing capacity? 750kg in Europe is the switch point between unbraked and braked trailers so is normally greater for braked ones. It doesn’t make sense that the 750kg you quoted would require a braked trailer.

That might be linked to the theoretical maximum of 3500 kilo for the entire combination of van+cargo+tow. That is the max weight for the B driver license. If you go above that weight your should get a C drivers license (for semi trucks).

The motor is in-line with the wheels and has to fit under the standard low load floor. A smaller diameter motor would have more ground clearance but do most van customers really care as long as the motor's aluminum casting can handle the impacts from road debris? This generation e-transit doesn't have the range or 4wd for overlanding so I don't think many people would take it off road.

The no skidplate thing is because full size vans generally are not engineered for any sort of off road capability. The Sprinter is fairly compromised for that, as is this.

Rivian is purely West Coast fair weather but I agree pointing out the drive motor wholly exposed is a no no big time. Good pointing out a lack of heat pump too.

With my Tesla I reduce my travel times in town on average about 20% because of the better acceleration without exceeding the speed limit. The 20% massively adds to productivity of any delivery person making an electric delivery vehicle almost mandatory to say nothing of the operating costs which you’ve already mentioned.

I find that number to strain credulity. Do you live in an area of 60 mph roads with endless red lights that are exactly a quarter mile apart?

@@xiaoka thanks for your comment. Firstly I am talking about driving in town where traffic lights are a factor. Second, I get my 20% number from the Google map estimate of my arrival time which I can usually cut by about 20% although sometimes it may be less. On the roadways where there are three lanes going each direction they will typically be a turning lane at the intersection that has parked cars on the opposite side of the street. If that lane is empty, I can pull into that lane and be across the intersection before the car is waiting at the light I’ve got a car length allowing me to safely gain one or two blocks lead on everyone that was previously behind me. I’ve never yet had anyone even get halfway across the intersection before I am completely across the intersection having passed everyone. I accelerate up to a typical driving speed of everyone behind me and look at them all rattling along a block or so behind me.

3500 kg full mass and 750 kg braked trailer is not because this van is weak, it's just because you'd need to have a different driver's license category for more weight here in Europe. Most businesses will be alright with the usual B license but for hauling more you'd need C or C1 or have C1/C1E if you need a bigger trailer. That would also need the dealership to issue another documentation for the car allowing that so basically nobody will do that and drive on a B license.

@@Scrap-press the car can't be more than 3500 kilos for B license in ANY case, per Council of the European Union Directive 91/439/EEC that hasn't been amended since 2008. Openly speaking, the number 4250 kg is not mentioned in the EU at all, the only numbers for B license are 3500 kg and 750 kg. And yeah, there are no exceptions to any regulations in driving made for electric vehicles at all.

If you ever do a Retro show, seek out a running eStar Van. Aluminium chassis and body, A123 based packs, beautifully styled. Last one I heard of was running around SF Bay Area some time back.

Nice to have a heat pump. I'm guessing not there. The electrical efficiency would improve range. Probably a deal breaker for me. Since it's a delivery van or campervan, a thermal barrier with the cargo bay seems warranted with air tight door. Very incremental improvement by these legacy companies. Its their market share to lose.

That low-slung motor without a skid plate is a disaster waiting to happen, especially with a commercial vehicle. Deliveries out of town or use as a vanlifer are going to involve some poor roads.

Totally agree, great opportunity for an aftermarket skid plate. Skid plates are not hard to make, but bulky to ship and tedious to install.

We have it - the E-sprinter is (or was) with 41kWh battery and 70 Kw engine... But somehow the importer lost the price list from its site. There seems to be some examples on sale, though. Fiat has also one called E-Ducato but it really is more fossil-aged thing than the Sprinter. Car manufacturers are so conservative - and that is the reason some people like Elon Musk can manage well on that game.

I wished I had a good calculation that would show carbon reduction per kwh of battery in different use cases. If batteries are a limiting factor in building more units, how would we get the most bang for our battery deployment. If you look at it simplistically a van driven 100 mile a day replacing a 17-mpg ice engine vs a Tesla Model 3 driven 40 miles a day replacing a 35-mpg gas car, the electric van will replace 3x more gas consumed than the Model 3. Any way you look at it these vans will be a game changer provided Ford makes them reliable.

I test drive one here in California. Drives well but the 125 mile range is a deal breaker. They need to increase the range and then it would be viable for a daily driver or travel van

this one looks to be a short wheelbase 130 inch model you can tell by where the rear fenders are located when they are that close to that up and down seem its a short wheel base the med length model has 15 inches or so spread from that up and down seam

Considering the target market, 200km range and the low! hanging rear motor will probably be ok. Driveability, maneuverability, and charge speed will define it.

Yeah I have currently 2018 transit 250 and I was looking forward for full electric but daily I drive around 200 miles to work and back so it’s not for me in this gas mileage which is pretty sad coz my thought was will be similar to f150 lightning .well hopefully sooner than later they improve this issue so I’ll be looking forward to get one.👌👍

No skid plate a problem? Did you forget you are standing in Germany, where potholes are a psychological affront to the national psyche? I have watched (working from home) a pothole repair in Germany. It took three days. It was like a root-canal for the road. Deep digging to the root of the problem, compaction of layers for days, and final finishing layers of asphalt compacted in every layer. That pothole was dead, unlike the undead zombie potholes we tolerate in the US.

Max speed for vans, trailers and large vehicles is 50mph on a roads in the UK. Speed restrictors set at 56mph.

I suspect this is impractical for service vehicle to be used daily, if you put shelves and tools and parts and then you wouldn't be able to drive half a day without running out of power. I am sure electric is the wave of the future but they have a long long ways to go

The VW Tuareg is advertised on Canadian TV. Wouldn't be the first time certain vehicles are available in Canada but not the U.S. As far as the effect of Wind Resistance, TFL truck/TFLEV ran a Ford Lightning with camper up to Prudhomme Bay, Alaska.

I'm wondering if the lack of a frunk is because they plan to offer a front motor. One of the cool things about the European market Transit (with ICE) is that you can buy it with front, rear, or all wheel drive.

🤗 I drove FORD VANS for decades…for family and work 🤗 and now I am retired…but I would be totally 💯 enjoying this except for my own STEREO SYSTEM…WAS ALWAYS A MUST 😁😎😍😍😍 Also love the center charge port and I would love💚 it if FORD WOULD USE TESLA’s charging …And I think it could happen 👍🤗😍😍😍

course running into some thing. damage to the charge port will be a problem, the other problem with the charge point in the front, is that most vans will back in, since drivers can see traffic easier

Before buying an electric vehicle, check with your insurance company. The insurance companies already know the cost of a replacement battery in case of a mishap will cost almost as much as the vehicle, and your insurance will skyrocket even higher.

They should have put the charge port somewhere else. I think it is a bad place for it in case of an accident, in that it will very easily disable battery charging.

If the ones for America are made in Turkey and imported as commercial vehicles, they will be subject to the chicken tax. That would explain the price bump. They used to add seats to the rear of Transits and take them out upon import, but the US threatened a ~$1B fine for such skirting.

It's Awesome having the weight down low and having it ride and handle so well, can we fill the roof with solar and get some charging during the day? I have a transit van here in Colorado on the western slope, I took out most of the seats to have a bed for camping, it rides terrible with out weight in the back and in the wind I don't like to drive it, I put sand bags in the back plus all my camping stuff just to get a better ride.

Curios about realistic mileage , Cause I really want to get a van to convert it but i prefer an EV as I enjoy them much more. But they state 120 miles, but it does have about 68KWH , most other cars can hit about 200 miles with that , so wondering if Ford is being humble on its range. I mean if this could hit 200 miles I would totally invest on it

My work bought one. Mid roof model. Basically a useless van. Ford messed up on this one. Realistic range it only gets 85 miles per charge though it says 110 on the dash

Nice review and you ar e right, the comparison to the F150 shows that the pricing is weird. Also 68kWh for such a van is a joke, that will in real life have at least 300-350Wh/km and beyond the moon if above 100kmh. So realistically less than 200km range for 60k? Makes no sense whatsoever to me.

I’m sure Ford did their market research and learned customers need just this; 120-240 miles/day last mile deliveries.

@@ben3989 except America is vast and small rural cities surround our major cities. It’s very common for a major metro to have a dozen or more towns 40-80 miles out. Can’t even run 60 miles both ways to fix a leaking faucet, (plumber) or refil Freon on a commercial AC(HVAC) or re-key a door lock(locksmith) in its current form it’s pretty impractical

Radiators are also used as part of battery coolant loops, yet most other EVs don't have that ICE-sized radiator.

It's a pity the range, of the E-Transit is so misrable. You can understand Ford not wanting to canibalise sales of their Fossil Fuel Vans though. Ford E-Transit currently has an Lithium NCM Traction Battery...
