This video was it for me. The above head view was the best thing for my swing and in turn made me realize how much I was casting. I took this to the range this morning and I moved a club up in distance with significantly less effort as a result of this video, and obtaining a descending blow of the golf ball. Thank you, Russell!

Thank you Russell. I can't wait to try this drill this weekend. I've had a 2-3 year layoff from golf and have found that as I'm reintroducing myself to the game I'm having a difficult time with my sequencing as you explain in the video. I seem to have lost two irons of distance and hope this drill will help me regain the yardage and improve my game. Thanks again. Todd

I really appreciate that your lessons are derived from understanding that people have differences in how they arrive at a result. Reminds me of the fun and value of trying to emulate different pro swing types. Movements that are extreme or opposing convenional but still trying to make a good strike.

I really like the top view that shows club head angle and hand position through impact. I come over the top too much, because my right hand wants to be the instigator of the downswing. I’ll give this a go today. Thanks

This advice works for me in combination with your video about how you never rush the swing. If you take the faulty movements you exaggerate for purposes of illustration and reduce them by about 85%, you get the error that I make, and probably many others. Early extension and release, which tends to close the club face ever so slightly so that even if you make a good strike the ball will go left of the pin. Which of the two ways you show to get forward shaft lean and a downward attack angle, a lot of rotation or a definite shift of the hips toward the target, may depend on the flexibility of an individual player. For me, at my age of 82, it is the linear forward shift, and the timing of it was perfectly demonstrated in the other video, the one, two, three steps. Just put that into practice today and it worked wonders. Wedges with good contact, good spin and straight at the pin, not on the left edge of the green. So again, thank you.

Absolutely bang on advice Russell. Bang on. I'm off 5 but still inconsistent in ball striking. My key swing thought (which I'm prone to forget when get head full of other stuff..) is 'hit down on the ball'. I find if I focus on that my path improves, the strike improves and I can consciously feel shaft lean rather than a flip at it. I think that is what the 2 lines drill you show on this vid demonstrates. Comments & many tks for these vids man. Best, Russell, Gt.Yarmouth :-)

The overhead shot synched with the front on view brilliantly demonstrates the two amateur mistakes of early extension and spinning out with the right hip. For the first time I now understand these two mistakes.....I am sure i randomly early extend in one swing and spin out on the next. no wonder I can never find consistency. Cant wait to video my own swing to see if this is the case. Got to figure out how to do an overhead video....You really can see what the hips are doing so much better from this view. This video is so jam packed with nicely presented swing analysis I watched it four times and got something different out of them each time. Many many thanks.

Russell- THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I recently decided to start playing golf again after taking a few years off... I didn't start playing golf until I was in my late 30s and am self-taught. My biggest problem has always been not knowing (or feeling) what I was doing right when I struck the ball solidly and what I was doing wrong when the wheels came off. As you can imagine, this led to bouts of frustration and dissecting my swing, trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Since I started playing/practising again, my results have been inconsistent. Like so many others, my mind can get clouded with a ton of swing thoughts, i.e. maintain your posture, turn your shoulders, shift your weight to start the downswing, get your left hip out of the way, keep your right shoulder back, etc., etc., etc. This one drill (which can also be a swing thought) is hands-down the best drill I have ever come across because you don't have to think about anything else. Since implementing this drill over the past few days, I have never hit the ball so flush and solid in my life! I do have one short question and am hoping you can take a second to answer- The only club that I am hitting somewhat inconsistently since incorporating this drill is my driver. Should I try to think of "brushing the bottom of my driver" on the 2nd line? Should I also think about keeping my head back/behind impact? My bad miss with my driver is usually a left and low hook, which I have always perceived to be the result of my lower body stopping and my upper body taking over... Thanks again for sharing your golf wisdom with us! Best wishes for good health to you and your family during this pandemic.

It’s hard to say for sure without seeing the swings however I would suggest hitting more down on the ball would help the club face become squared through the impact

Been struggling with clean pure contact on and off since I started playing golf. Tried the 2 line drill and the feedback (how the swing should feel) had an immediate effect. I was almost shocked how clean and pure i started to hit the balls after the drill and how my swing thought of where to strike the ball when i was at address was not correct, I also gained distance. Lots of work to do in many other areas but this drill has really helped impact. What i also found was using this 'feel' as a foundation i am able to start to incorporate other swing changes (hips rotation, club shallowing etc.). Thanks Russell, great channel and superb teaching methods!

Excellent. The camera view from above your head is brilliant! It's an angle that best demonstrates why, 1. The "bump-squat" move to reestablish center, and 2. How the arms-hands-club "assembly" wrap around a rotating torso into a full finish. You can't allow your arms to muscle the impact. Relaxation of that "assembly" is essential. Russell, I'm, now, finishing with my full weight over my left heel, for the very first time. Thank you! I think youtube is advancing golf instruction by leaps and bounds because it's encouraging instructors to come up with more imaginative ways to demonstrate how to execute three dimensional, complex body movements happening in fractions of a second. Old School teaching pros just tried to "talk" their students through a lesson. You can't teach golf, verbally, then, grab your students club and demonstrate YOUR technique. It does not work! It never has!

I read a great tip years ago that changed my game in this regard--it was "swing the handle of the club at the ball." It mentally takes the clubbed out of your thought process and automatically gets your hands and club into the correct impact position. Don't know if it will help, but try it. Really worked for me with my irons, in particular.

Excellent video. Thank you. Unlearning faulty motor movement patterns is, as you are well aware, a challenging task especially if the patterns are entrenched. In this regard there appears much a do on RU-vid golf at present regarding the new 'Erikson Bell' training aid which, its advocates claim, encourages not only planar swinging motion but also the 'shift -turn' (or shorn as they call it) rhythm inherent to good swinging. As you are a strong advocate of the 'shift -turn' sequence both on back and forward swings, I wondered what your thoughts on this device are?

When I first tried this drill with a ball, my instincts were telling me I couldn't hit the second stripe because the ball was in the way. Like the ball was a brick wall or something. The painted stripe makes a very vivid image and helped me to get over that feeling. After a few swings I got over that feeling, and it does feel like I am hitting through the ball instead of stopping at the ball. So far I've used it to hit foam balls in my backyard, and once at the driving range and the results were pretty good. Looking forward to see how well it holds up on the golf course.

I've found a way to get this kind of impact consistently, with a very simple lower body downswing sequence. This move allows me to keep the arms very relaxed through impact and hit a lot of solid shots. All I use as a downswing trigger is a small turn of the bottom of the pelvis target ward, followed by a feel of lightly pressuring the back of the left heel, into the turf like it had a knife attached to it. The old "squash a can with the heel," thought never worked for me but this does.

@@davee3951 Thank you for your reply. I like your original thought of turning the bottom of the front zipper. To be honest, I have two concerns about the advice in the link: (1) looks good for driver, but it seems like it would be difficult to cover the ball to compress iron shots, and more importantly (2) such a curvature of the spine while twisting at high speed looks like it would eventually lead to back injuries. I believe that is why the reverse ‘C’ has become out of favor.
@davee3951
@davee3951 2 года назад
@@stephenrose4582 Good comments on the link. I think that the demonstration is a bit exaggerated. I don't have enough swing speed to get into that much of a reverse 'C' and tend to finish upright and balanced over the lead food. This move works very well for me with ground shots. I agree that it's a counter-intuitive move but for some reason it works for me, and no problems with back pain.

Hello Russell I am a flippy poor contact with irons golfer for a LONG time. Everyone knows my impact position is off. It happens so fast no one can fix it. We discuss it a lot. Sheer determination and good short game I can compete at 62 with younger fellas. My distance can vary 20 yds any iron if I get lucky and pure one. Your point about the position of the left shoulder in line with left ankle and hands at impact and the hit ahead drill to feel it......BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! Fixed my swing. Distance and power. Consistent. I have watched this one video 10 times. You absolutely cannot think about it in the swing but you better know what impact should look and feel like to get in the proper position. I never had done so until today. A mirror is also helpful. Thanks for painting a great picture. Again brilliant. Did I say brilliant? Cheers! Many thanks from Texas Richard

You still USE the R hip. But you use it to load into the L hip forward. You do not use it to spin open. Which then commences an over the top sequence. Pretty cool. I practiced it and it really helped me stay connected and sequenced without coming over the top. This then allows me to put a consistent swing on the ball. Over the top is the death move for me. This helps prevent that - at least in my swing. Good luck.

Still think this is one of his best videos, 2:15 to 3:15 is just brilliant instruction. Seems to be a truism.

I would like to ask a follow up question here. So I have a decent transition on the downswing. I am obtaining an open area for my arms to swing through and am getting okay compression. My question though is I start with my hand almost in like with the shaft. In other words I’m close to one plane swing and the only way with compression and proper positioning on my downswing that I can hit the ball instead of blading it is to have a decent size dip of my head. How are people able to get great compression and not have that dip in their head?

Could you discuss stack and tilt vs conventional, please? I have a hard time staying centered and my Golftec coach wanted me to make a move yesterday that made me reverse pivot and looked like s&t. He denied it but it looks like s&t to me. Anyway..thanks.

Well I would suggest the discussion is more about thoracic extension compared to flexion. I personally prefer the weight to stay on the trail side. I’ll try to incorporate a feature on the channel open to questions or will look to include this into the channel soon

This video really helped me figure out why I couldn't seem to get my hands over my lead foot at impact. I've never heard it taught this way or any mention of re-establishing the lead shoulder or low point. Between this video and Russell's detailed videos on hip rotation, I feel like I can finally start improving my swing instead of just further ingraining the wrong technique. I'd like to strike that second line through more hip rotation rather than forward slide, but it seems like it is so much more difficult. I'm afraid that just sliding forward will make it too easy to revert back to my old habit of dropping the trail shoulder while early extending the lower body.

After I can hit the forward line consistently and want to hit a ball do I aim to hit the ball or a spot about a club heads width forward of the ball? Thanks for your video instruction.
