Jake Elliot's Field goal may just be the greatest kick of all time. Very hard to tell and score all the kicks but I think it very well may be. I would love to hear your guys' thoughts in the comments!
elliot in his entire career: never missed a kick during playoffs never missed a game tying kick never missed a game winning kick say what you will about his random xp and 40 yarder misses at the weirdest possible times but when the games on the line he is an absolute clutch monster
@@greaserbubtheoriginal7923 he's a huge golfer too, so having experience with both of those sports combined wouldn't surprise me as to how he's able to hit more consistently from further distances lol
@@templarknight7 And? It didn’t “win the game” but in that moment it was the single only thing that kept them from losing. Also don’t underestimate the effect of forcing a team to overtime in that way. That was deflating for the Bills in a huge way.
It's an incredible kick My favorite thing is how disgusted Hurts and Kelce were that it was made. They both were shaking their heads. They knew they dun effed up and were saved by a nearly impossible kick lol
@@xtlm wouldn't have been in that situation if for the blown calls. Really not that hard to grasp... clearly ignored horse collar to then call intentionally grounding... Eagles aren't shit without refs. Been bailed out every game since miami
@@inkarceration4069im not an eagles fan but notice how every good team always “has the refs help”. Patriots, chiefs and now eagles. Its almost like people love to hate good teams and scrutinize all the bad calls that go in their direction.
Jake Elliot is absolutely underrated. He made his career-long game-winning 61 yarder against the Giants back in '17 which is the year they went the Superbowl. Definitely important for the season, the only thing missing was conditions. He was the backup kicker at the time. I really do think Elliot will go down in history as one of the greats. Certainly in Eagles history at least, along side the likes of David Akers who was an absolute stud.
Too early to say he'll go down as one of the greats, that's the thing with kickers. We see flashes of greatness and incredible peaks for SO many kickers, but what makes the best ones the best are how long they can do it before they just fall off the face of the earth. Tucker is the GOAT because he just doesn't ever decline. We see it so frequently with kickers that come in, have an amazing 1-3 seasons, but then have a bad stretch of games or a bad season and just never ever recover from it.
You're not going to believe me, but watching this this team the entire season, that kick was the only thing I was confident in. Jake Elliott has never missed a clutch kick
2005 Eagles v Raiders, David Akers game winner on a torn hamstring. Most grit I ever seen from a kicker, he hit that thing and collapsed immediately from the pain.
David Akers is a Beast and will always remain an iconic chess piece in the Eagle’s Reid Era domination of the NFC. (Which led to our continued dominance of the NFC and Superbowl, praying for more, our organization is amazing) GO BIRDS 🦅
Tom Dempsey’s kick from 63 yards with half a foot should get honourable mention. Some say that the kick sounded like a cannon off of his foot. You tube it with actual sound from sideline for best effect. Elliot’s kick is in the top 5 no doubt but Dempsey deserves similar accolades.
During my college years (late 70's to the early 80's), I knew a guy from Detroit who had traveled with his dad and brother to see the game in New Orleans in which Tom Dempsey kicked the 63 yarder. My friend told us that the Detroit fans were seated together in a section of the stadium. When Dempsey walked out onto the field, the fans from Detroit were really vocal in making fun of both the distance that Dempsey was trying to kick, and of Dempsey's deformity (it was a different era). Keep in mind that in those days, the goal posts were on the goal line, so the spot was really well on its way to being close to the Saints' own goal line. The Detroit fans were making as much noise as they could when Dempsey kicked the ball, and the _percussion_ of Dempsey's kick shut up Detroit and New Orleans fans alike. My friend claimed that it was like an M-80 going off - it was _felt_ as much as it was heard. The whole stadium was stunned by what was essentially an explosion. Then, when the ball just cleared the crossbar and both refs (also looking somewhat surprised) signaled a field goal, the stadium erupted, and the Saints fans lit into the same Lions fans that had just been mocking the Saints' kicker, who was essentially the *embodiment* of someone who was "differently abled."
The field was one large patch of mud, too, so he wasn't kicking from a clean and level surface. Kicking indoors today is like going to a driving range: just tee it up in perfect conditions.. Dempsey's kick is unrivaled in my opinion.
All the kicks that equalled or exceeded Dempsey's 63 yarder were all kicked either indoors or in Denver at Mile High. Dempsey's kick at the time was unbelievable and mind blowing.
It was insane and they won. Had he missed and they lost, it would have been “expected” by the experts, but he made it and they won. He nailed a 61-yarder in ‘17 against the Giants to win it and they went on to win the Super Bowl. Of course, Wentz got injured later and Foles took over. Time will tell.
yeah this kick was absolutely wild. dude deserves a ton of credit. He earned his spot on the kicking pantheon now (he was already really good, this was just the crowning achievement so far)
I'm an Eagles fan and Jake Elliot is something special. That 61-yarder against the Giants a few years back was a thing of beauty, but I believe this may be his magnum opus (so far at least). I was on the edge of my seat this entire game, and when Elliot came out to kick I knew the odds were against him but if anyone could do it, it was him. Without him not only would this game have been lost, but very possibly the Week 4 game against Washington could have been lost too, changing the dynamic of everything that came after it.
Elliot knew exactly how he had to kick that ball to have a chance... I doubt that he's paid for many beers in philly lately but that's officially free beers for life.
The Eagles needed this win badly, we’re two games ahead of the niners and cowboys for the #1 seed, and we still play both of them. Big time implications for playoff seeding
@@johnnywishbone. Eagles could still give up the #1 seed… we could easily lose both next week and the week after? The win against the bills helped our chances big time. Numbnuts
@@kally286 in your original statement you used the word "badly" - needing to win "badly" means you are about to get eliminated from playoff contention and its necessary to win to stay alive. it would be nice for the eagles to get the #1 seed, but its not necessary for their playoff berth and superbowl run. now do you understand you drama queen?
@@kally286I agree a very tough stretch we have here. Miami then KC then Buffalo and it doesn't get easier then two of the top NFC teams. This eagles team is good, but they still haven't been doing great offensively. They really only show up in the second half most games. With the standings being as close as they are and with the tough schedule every game is pretty much a must win. We're not worried about playoff contention so much as #1 seed. It'll stop us from having to play Dallas again in the playoffs.
When I saw the game Sunday, your take was my thought exactly. I immediately thought that at 59 yards in the rain/cold/wind, this had to be one of the best. No dome at 70 F on carpet kick. Great kick
If college football was included, I think the Colorado State vs. Hawai'i game winning kick this past weekend would also be a contender. The clock was running, with just 8 seconds left. The kicker had to run onto the field without any setup and somehow Matt Shipley kicked a 51-yard field goal to win the game, without a second to spare. I would be so happy if you went over this play isaac, as I think it's one of the greatest college football kicks of all time
In 2017 Jake hit a 61 yarder to beat the Giants early in the season. It seemed to light a fire with the team giving them the feeling that they couldn't be stopped. They went on to win the Super Bowl. Hope this kick provides that same feeling. 'We can win no matter what'.
An amazing clutch kick for sure. It will need more time to simmer to see if it will leave a big impact for the Eagles. It's why I don't think it quite tops Vinatieri's game tying 45 yard snow kick in the 2001 AFC Divisional game between Patriots vs. Raiders as that game tying kick saved the Pats season and would lead to the Pats winning the superbowl, giving birth to the Patriots Dynasty.
It's up there. Talking with a fellow NFL fan who brought up exactly the three you mentioned, before concluding that this one might be the most remarkable of them all.
Hey IP. Great video. I watched this game live on Sunday. I don't have cable or any streaming services. I have a modern "rabbit ears" antenna. I have to say, watching this game, and this kick, and then for the eagles to win in OT...that was the greatest bang-for-my-buck moment in my sports watching career. Love the dunk celebration by the kicking team afterwards too. As far as best kicks ever? Call it recency bias but it has to be top 3 after the other 2 you put up at the beginning.
The most memorable for me was his 61 yard field goal against the Giants, with one second, yes ONE SECOND, to go. And he puts it right down the middle. You could hear a pin drop at the snap, and then the Linc just erupts when it goes through.
“Right down the middle?” Ball almost had paint on it from the right upright. Which is fine since he started on right hash, and kicked it straightest line & shortest distance.
I can't help but think of Matt Ammendola's game-tying attempt just a few hours earlier. Just a few more feet... we might thrown that one into the mix! Elliott's kick is definitely one for the ages... as an Eagles fan, I've already ordered the oxygen for this week's tilt against the 49ers! 🤣
Implications…. The Eagles are playing for home field advantage in the playoffs. Elliot misses that kick it kills their momentum and they are 9-2. Then if the Eagles lose to San Fran next week they are 9-3 and they lose home field to San Fran. That kick helped them keep a buffer. Now they need to keep the momentum going and beat San Fran.
As far as impact this kick could easily be the difference maker in getting the 1 seed in the playoffs. People have been sleeping on Jake Elliot but not anymore.
Elliot has never ever once missed a must have and that, woulda been good from 70. If not 68, rain wind. And he’s hit a 61 game winner that propelled the eagles to a super bowl victory in 2017
That shot of Jalen just shaking his head says it all. Coming here after they fucking stupidly designed a play to get a DPI call instead of just getting into field goal range for Jake and are on a 3 game slide. I needed to see this today
As a Cowboys fan who was hoping to gain a game on the Eagles, I knew Elliot was going to nail this. This kick probably gives the Eagles the division. The man is clutch.
Monday morning Jake Elliot was interviewed on 94.1 Philly Spots Talk in my Philadelphia area and said that was his most difficult kick ever. Also, our sports talk guys were kind of having an agreement that we are starting to have to see Jake Elliot as our best kicker of all time over David Akers which, it sounds silly but makes me emotional as a life long Eagles fan. non-NFL fans wouldn’t get it, real fans would.
What comes to my mind is the Jack Dempsey Field goal against the Lions in 1970. I watched as a unlikely kicker, kicking straight on and not soccer style, born with a club foot, kicked a 63 yard field goal to win the game for New Orleans. It had never been done and wouldn't happen again for another 28 years. It took 43 years to surpass it.
This is a good one but...the 2017 week 3 kick vs the Giants was the moment where that team put their mind in a place where there was no option other than winning the SB. Daddy Loong Stroke, is and will always be a legend.
I was at that patriots game. My dads friend gave us his tickets because he thought brady would choke and the blizard wasnt worth sitting through. Now its remembered as one of the greats game off all time.
I really need us to talk about the holder. I see so many clips of this talking about Jake (which is so great!) but significant credit goes to the holder too-- On snap, the holder has to place the ball at the correct spot, the perfect angle, and laces facing away. My man #10 placed the ball and then spun it in a blink... just take a look for yourself!
This kick was so unreal. Not even being biased because I am from Philly. The way he drilled that football and kept it at a low angle was unreal. He absolutely roped it. Would love to see some sports science on this kick.
Gotta put Jake's first 61 yard kick in the greatest ever as well. Game on the line, 61 yards, sent them through to the Superbowl, longest ever by a rookie and a franchise record. Oh, and it was the year he was picked up off the Bengals PRACTICE SQUAD to join the Eagles after being initially waived by the Bengals from the draft. He also holds 3 NFL records for a rookie. Longest FG ever (above) longest playoff game FG, and longest superbowl FG. He holds a staggering 6 franchise records: Longest kick (above, but has done it twice) highest completion %, season 50+ FGs, career 50+ FG, longest playoff FG, and longest Superbowl FG.
I remember a dude kicking a FG to win a playoff game, in the snow. Can’t recall his name. 😉 He later kicked the FG to win the Super Bowl. But yeah, let’s call a regular season game “the greatest kick ever.”
It is kinda crazy how that Tucker 66 yarder if you move it like 3 yards forward it’s just like “Well yeah he’s in Tucker range” even though it would still be a 63 yard winner lol. Really shows how crazy good of a kicker he is
i dont think the stakes of the kick are so much for the Eagles as they were for the Bills. The Eagles knew damn well that winning this game made the Bills' chances of making it to the playoffs much much more difficult which realistically for them is something worth considering. The Bills have been super bowl contenders for a few seasons now so knocking them out is definitely going to be relevant for the Eagles post season picture. I understand the steaks aren't super big in the micro, but on the macro the impact that kick had on the Bills trajectory for the season was catastrophic. So while it wasn't a must win, it was definitely an important win.
Great video! I hadn't seen any of these so this was a treat. I think being able to kick a ball through the uprights is impressive enough but under pressure to win? Supremo.
For personal bias reasons, no Ravens player will be considered "great" in my opinion. And I remember the old Browns kicker, Phil Dawson, kicking a 40+ yard game winning field goal, in a lake effect blizzard with near 40mph cross winds, and visibility being around 10 yards.
Personally? I love the kick. The only way for me to win my fantasy game that week was for the game to go into OT, Buffalo to win the toss and get a field goal and Philly to score a touchdown with Hurts. Lo and behold, Elliott hits it. Buffalo kicks a field goal, Hurts runs in for a TD and I pull off a miracle win that also got me into the playoffs. I might add Tom Dempsey's 63 yarder. He was straight on kicking and it was to win the game.
