I challenged myself to take photos of the skaters at Venice Beach on my Leica M11 with a range of lenses, all shot wide open. THIS is the Leica look. See a gallery from this shoot here: dave.online/writings/venice-b...

The photography community at times have pigeon holed the M series to just street photography and portraits. When I see a photographer use a M and its design for action, sports, landscape, and other genres that is something to appreciate. Back to the core rule it’s the photographer that makes the image,the camera is the tool. 😊
@davidherring
@davidherring 2 месяца назад
Absolutely. A camera is anything a photographer wants it to be. Zone focusing and street photography is a very small percentage of what this camera and system can do.

Yeah, fast shooting with an M is the most fun and challenging way to shoot with it. Some of my favorite shots were the most fun to capture as I was really on the edge of catching the moment on my M3

Dude, love seeing you challenge yourself to shoot in a different way and learn something from it. Photos look amazing! And you’re right, the Leica look is wide open. That’s why Karbe says he designs the lenses to be shot wide open!

Cool photos! I use my M for photographing skateboarding often in New York. I need to get out to Venice Beach soon! I mostly use a TTArtisan 11mm fisheye, but I do use my 28mm Elmarit and 50mm Summicron often. The 50mm wide open is so beautiful for skating.

Great video - really phenomenal photos. When I first got into photography I used to shoot wide open all the time - Some of those photos are some of the best. Your approach was really cool (constrain yourself to the lens being wide open) and force yourself to work around that. Your results were spectacular.

I went there recently with my M11/50mm. Fun to try and prefocus and anticipate, but tough. Not sure I got any keepers but I was only there for 30 minutes and my focal length was pretty tight. Still fun. I live close so I return here from time to time. Old skater myself. I think I see the great Andy Anderson in your shots.

For sure man. I figured out something similar with my Q2 as it relates to the “look”. The 28mm at 1.7 is the look. You’ve touched on it before but at say 5.6 and the right grade any camera can look like a Leica but the lenses are designed with wide open in mind, I think, and that’s where they separate themselves. Couple sick shots you got for sure 👍

Great shots Dave. Here's the truth...beauty is rare. All the great things in life take time and sacrifice. Things that are easy or convenient are not special. If you work on something that's challenging, hard, that takes time your art will stand out from the masses who don't have the talent or (more importantly) the fortitude to be great. The more challenging the skill or project, the better your Art will be for it.

PO just delivered my 8 stop 46mm that I ordered because my 2 and 4 stops just weren’t enough to smooth out fast moving water in scenics. Thing about Leica in addition to shooting wide open is that you don’t want to shoot f11 or 16 when you want max sharpness. Difference from DSLR and Mirrorless shooting.

This will be blasphemy to many but for the most part I much prefer the B&W that comes out of the M11 over the M11 M. Based on some of the sample images I have seen from different people the M11 M files can be very very rich and detailed but in way that doesn’t “speak to me” however I think the M11 M actually benefits from paired with less than perfect glass. I recently found a photographer who shoots his M11 M with the Zeiss lenses and his work is amazing. All of the above is just my subjective rambling 😂
