man when you're that tall you don't even need basketball skills. You just need to be able to be somewhat coordinated and have at least some sort of wind. The biggest thing with these guys is endurance. Most can only stay on the floor for a tiny bit and then need a breather. I remember kenny george at UNC-Asheville and that dude could literally only play for like a minute or two at a time.
@@keepitrealhomes i'd say "incredibly skilled" is a GIANT overstatement. Look i absolutely love boban and he is for sure very skilled for his height. but you take away his height and he is an absolutely horrible player who can't stay on the floor for very long. A 6'8" Boban is not in the NBA. not even close. Just watch the man move around compared to the players around him on the court. Also the NBA is a lot different than NCAA. 7'4" in college is absolutely enormous. 7'4" in the NBA is just a little bigger than your average big man.
It speaks to the talent of Purdue's other players that they can still generate offense without a dominant player like Edey. It's what separates them from other teams with an elite big man like Michigan
@@TimTheMusicMan I respectfully disagree, basketball is actually demanding more and more skill every day. If this statement was true, that height is the only thing that matters in basketball, guys like Allen Iverson, Chris Paul, and Isaiah Thomas would never have succeeded in the NBA like they did. As the sport has progressed, players have become more creative when it comes to scoring and moving the ball.

I see a lot of people in the comments keep saying Yao for a comparison, but I'm not really seeing it. His game reminds me of Boban more than anyone else. He plays within his skillset, has pretty soft hands, good footwork, and generates all his offense around the rim. Him and Boban are also really close in size and height.
He is PROFOUNDLY slow and clunky. Boban had a decade of professional ball under his belt before coming to the NBA and he still (for the most part) only plays due to his overseas connections. Boban and Yao are more appropriate comparisons, as Yao would, quite probably, struggle with the speed of today's game. Gray skies ahead for the young boy.

@@respectedlocalgentleman7108 from this footage I don't see a "profoundly slow and clunky" player. I see a well co-ordinated player with adequate mobility (to say the least) and good moves. The instance he managed to regain the ball (when it was thrown to him up high at the height of the foul-line) and pirouetted around himself and dunked the ball, only using one dribble and a drop step, shows a player with a lot more skill and mobility than Boban TODAY).
This also shows how great a coach Matt painter is. One of the greatest Indiana basketball coaches ever. Edit: the system of offense that he runs doesn’t require a dominant scorer and that is why I think we have been so successful over the years

Great video but what we trade for this dominance on offense is big time weakness on defense in Painter's man D system. Would be great to see a video like this disecting our flaws on D due to having such big and slow bigs.
Kofi Cockburn - 21.8 PTS 12.1 REB, Zack Edey - 14.9 PTS, 7.3 REB Sorry...not sure you make a case for Edey to be the most dominant man in college basketball. Edey's a great player and most teams don't have an answer for him, but he's not the most dominant.
7 pts and 5 rebounds in 12 more min's. I think a case can be made that in 12 min's he's scoring 8 points and getting 5 rebounds. A case can in fact be made for both.
@@tric5122 You could try to make that case, but no one has before. I don't think people look at per 40 or anything when calling someone the most dominant player in a sport. When you do that, you may end up finding a player that plays 5 minutes a game is the most dominant. Keep in mind how tired a 300 lb, 7 ft'er gets in those additional minutes. You can't say that Edey produces at the same level he's doing in less minutes. : )
@@jrmarcus Just bc nothing was done before doesn't mean it's irrelevant now. When talking about dominance it's about what one does while on the floor when Edy is on the floor its hard to argue anyone is more dominant. Same w/Cockburn; but b/c Cockburn doesn't play w/a guy like Williams he gets more minutes. If Edy was on another team where he was playing 30 min's and Kofi was at Purdue, the roles are reversed and so are the stats. Its the guys point by using per 40 as his example.
- Injuries rob some of the greats (and would be greats): Bill Walton, Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, Grant Hill, Tmac, and Yao. Shaq actually had to go super saiyan to compete against Yao. Yao even blocked Shaq x3 in their first matchup -- Good stuff.

At first I thought this was just another overlooked big man in an era of 3 and D stretch 4's and 5's. But I love how Matt Painter is using the spacing created by the help being glued to the post to open up dribble drives and skip pass 3s. You can basically run dribble drive motion offense, flex cuts, and of course screens to get a small on big switch. Finally a dominant big man to create some spacing instead of using the 3 pt line with outside shooting to create the same spacing. Great video and breakdown. I am a huge fan of Vance Walberg, so when you mention points per possession, and spacing, you are speaking my language!
Kofi is the guy this video should be about.."most dominant per 40 min" sooo...through 2 games..watch any Illinois game and you'll see Kofi drawing double and triple teams in every single game
I would take Kofi over Edey solely off of athleticism, and you're right, Kofi is at least doubled every game. But basketball is a team sport, and Edey's supporting players are showing that they can still score at a top 5 level without giving the ball to him. Illinois, on the other hand, aren't the same team without Kofi being on the court. Same goes for UofM. If Dickinson isn't on the court, Michigan doesn't do as well. The only reason Teams don't double team Edey is because if they do, the rest of the Boilermakers are going to punish them.
The difference between Edey and Williams is that over time you'd expect Williams to become a three level scorer, independently finding gaps in the defense like Randle or Davis. Edey probably doesn't have that potential, but can become a significant factor if paired with a highly aggressive guard like LaMelo or Harden. Edey's height would be enough to entice extra unnecessary help on post entries, opening up slashes and threes. Moreover, the IQ and awareness seem to be there. He goes to the ball well, has decent hands, and typically has the fortitude to fight for position. But the big question is whether he can open up that shot chart and get more hook shots and turnarounds to go in. After all, playing against NBA talent is very different than dominating in college. Imagine him being guarded by the likes of Giannis, AD, KP, Ayton, or Draymond. The height wouldn't be enough to ensure efficient offense. And being a one trick pony (dunks and layups) puts a ton of pressure on your guards to get you the ball properly. Tldr he's a traditional big that could be a good piece for a team looking to make the leap. However, he's probably not going to dominate the league unless he opens his game up to new kinds of shots.
@@Wooden_iguana14 yeah good point, he'd probably be required to lose 10-20 lbs to stay on the floor defensively vs mobile bigs like gobert, towns, and embiid. Relying on size won't be enough.
It all comes down to the position he'll be able to grab the ball in the NBA. If it's close to the basket without a dribble needed, he'll be as dominant. Remember that he'll get stronger and more skilled with time. He looks very good in terms of body structure and proportions as well as well as in terms of IQ and touch. I see great things happening for this kid as long as he decides to dedicate himself to the craft.
At some point the success of those big's in the system starts to recruit for itself. They know they'll be a key to the team and it becomes obvious they know how to develop them to their peek. They want to be part of this.
Yep and he chose Purdue over other teams that were heavily recruiting him. I think the success of the previous big men at Purdue is helping draw them in now.
He still needs to add a 10-15 foot jumper to compliment his inside game. His payday won't be in the nba. It would be in china, where he will get mega endorsements. He should take good care of his feet. Big men his size usually developes foot problems at the end.
Ya never know. He’s got pretty decent mobility and great hands. I think he’ll be a mid first rounder just off potential so hopefully he goes to the right team. God knows the Celtics could use a young guy like that 😂

He might play in NBA but will never be a starter he is to slow and with the NBA new game killing bigs he better off Over Seas. In the NBA bigs now have to shoot the 3 and also be able to defend outside so they need good foot speed

I don’t think he’ll get much of an opportunity with the NBA bc of his mobility and defense ability but that Jamarion Sharp dude could potentially be the next good NBA giant….good mobility and defense
first of all this guy is crazy tall but being that tall and not being incredibly skinny is super rare. He's so well built for his size, he looks crazy.
certainly not a shot at you, but it's funny hearing that if he started playing 35 mins a game his per 40 stats would decrease. 2 NPOYs later, it just shows how much work edey has put in to his game and conditioning level to keep up his elite play
Plus we teams fronting him in the post on the baseline drive action makes it easier for him to collect offensive boards. Purdue looks like a nightmare to defend with those two big men

Seeing the obvious resemblance and unusually quick footwork for being a giant, he looks like he is Yao Mings son but has a long way to get to that lvl against the NBA lvl
