I have to say, putting saw Guerra in andor and rogue one has to be one of the most genius finesses of Star Wars. They took a character who’d run along the line of sanity and insanity, and made him work in the larger story

Even aside from how amazing this whole show was, I was so fucking delighted there wasn't a single scene on Tatooine.

I like how the recent Star Wars media has been slowly attempting to make the stormtroopers seem less like meat for the grinder, and more like a dangerous military unit.

the ISB scenes are my favorite. It shows what intelligence work is. It’s mostly meetings and sitting behind a computer looking at reports and tying together threads. Unlike most sci-fi examples of intelligence work, where the officers are in the mud kicking the shit out of people. while there is an occasional interrogation, most intelligence work isn’t like that.

Nobody is talking enough about how Mon Mothma threw her entire family away for this rebellion, she threw her husband infront of the ISB radar to protect her shady banking decisions and threw her daughter into her culture's traditions, which she[Mon Mothma] clearly dislikes, and into the hands of a mob boss. She gave it all away for the rebellion, it's crazy to think about that while rewatching the OT

Andor's depiction of The Empire makes the idea of jedi/sith and specifically Darth Sidious dressed in a robe being in charge on a throne somewhere feel so weird? haha... for me it shifts my perception of Star Wars; now there's a Eye's Wide Shut (by Stanley Kubrick) vibe; that behind the grounded political power/Empire there's a secret magic worshiping cult(Sidious,vader) controlling everything, that probably sounds so crazy to the average star wars citizen, they wouldn't believe you

While Andor has been some of the best Star Wars we’ve had in years, it has also lead to some of the best Generation Tech videos I’ve ever seen.

What make Andor so good is that we don't get legend characters every 5 minutes and that fan service is not a thing.

Tony Gilroy proved that he can surpass Dave Filoni at writing Star Wars. Hopefully, he gets to do more.

The mention that Andor was in a heist for money and not a mcguffin makes the motivation of the heist more real and gives the characters their own individual reasons to participate in the heist

I really like looking at the differences between how the Imperial Army handled the locals on Aldoni vs the ISB lead effort on Ferrix

The parallel between Syril's shellshocked expression at the end of the deployment to Ferrix and Dedra's terror as she was almost killed by the angry mob is just amazing, it so very well fits that we get to see them together. I have a feeling season two will start with them both at the ISB, that is if they're done making baby banthas in that tool shed in the town

Tony Gilroy made the police sector of the empire terrifying.Imagine you gave him the sith to tell a story with.

I kind of understand why you covered all these details. Andor is not about the force, the politics and Jedi mumbo jumbo. It’s about the common folks living in a dystopia struggling for their survival. I guess in a way or another, it makes connection to many of us.

The Mandalorian is chock-full of fan service cameos and easter eggs, and that's one of the things I love about it. Andor has almost no fan service cameos and easter eggs, and THAT'S one of the things I love about IT!

In my opinion, Andor also explains why stormtroopers are more common in other star wars media set in this period in the form of P.O.R.D. This basically raises the heat level very high where (in GTA terms) you get only 1 or 2 stars for commiting crimes before, now its straight to six star wanted level.

14:32 I appreciate what you said about Tony Gilroy inserting real-life scenarios into the fictional world of Star Wars to make Andor feel more grounded. I bet he borrowed the abandonment of the rebel Anto Kreegyr from an actual incident that occured during World War II: the British MI6 managed to decode Germany's Enigma Code, but realized it would sacrifice its advantage if they acted on every intercepted message. Therefore, they let German U-boats attack an ocean convoy, thus sacrificing lives in order to prevent tipping Germany off to the fact that their code was compromised.

We won't see the next season of Andor for two years or late 2024. That is sooo long to wait. I hope the franchise fills in such a large gap with something worthy of Generation Tech to cover because I watch this channel as a compendium to what the studio puts out.

The one thing I noticed in the finale is how the pauldron on the Death Troopers looks almost too leathery over the hardened pauldron

Tony finally being the one to show how horrifying the empire is and the dangers of living during their regime makes me so happy. Even though the Empire has always been a threat, this is the first time I genuinely felt terror for our characters. Whether it’s the revelation that the floor of the prison can kill you at a moment’s notice, the fact that the prisoners are forced to compete for scraps every day and the loser is fried, whether it’s the doctor’s chilling explanation of the torture about to befall Bix, and so on and so forth. It’s never been a secret that the Empire is dangerous and evil but this is the first time where I completely and wholeheartedly believe it. They pose a serious threat in this show and it’s amazing to finally see that.

Andor for #1 best written Star Wars show in my opinion. #2 of course being the Clone Wars Series

I feel like you hit the nail on the head in regards to the importance of world building. I’m not a professional in anything like filmmaking or writing but as a viewer you feel like sometimes you can tell when a writer is writing characters and stories for an established and beloved fictional universe versus when they’re creating the universe and the characters as they go along. What typically irritates fans is when you have an established universe and characters and the writers just try to do their own thing in that universe. For instance like what happened with Luke. I actually enjoyed a lot of him from the last Jedi but you can see what fans mean when they feel like he was mishandled. Like you said Star Wars is easily one of the most established franchises ever and has some of the most worldbuilding and lore of any story in history. Hardcore fans (Not just movie fans and tv show fans like me but fans that like read all the books, watched all the behind the scenes and commentaries , played the games, and read the comics😅) they like Dave Filoni know these characters and this entire universe to the finest detail. You can literally write a history book for the Star Wars universe….people have written history books for the Star Wars universe😂! So when you try to tell fans how the universe and characters work very diff how it’s always been portrayed it’s like telling a historian that 300 is a documentary for Ancient Greece😅. Obviously that’s an exaggeration but you get the point. Instead of simply writing an interesting scenario and asking how would Cassian react to this or how would Cassian react to this knowing Vel is watching him closely. A writer making it up as he goes may go “how will my Star Wars fanfiction version of Cassian react to this situation. Lol basically look at the whole situation of Henry Cavill leaving the Witcher and it’s this entire scenario played out in a very real and very public form.😂

I still have a very hard time believing that OP cinder was even a thing. Why would the emperor destroy his most loyal planets if (as we know from episode 9) he was planning to rule them again. I also have a hard time believing that even the ISB would carry it out if they thought he was dead.

I'm telling you as an 80's kid that knows the feeling of what it was like to watch the original SW back then live you get that same feeling with Andor. It's got a weird balance of being ahead of it's time while being of it's time and that's really hard to do. For that alone I think it's a great show not to mention some of the other things mentioned in this video and the comments. They finally built a world where you truly feel how menacing both the Empire/Rebellion are while at the same time getting you to understand the motivation of the other side depending on where you fall.

Another reason this series works so well (and Rogue One, despite the editing mess it story had to stumble through) is that returns to the original trilogy's focus on people. At it core, its focus is less on the world and the fantasy and more one the characters that interact with that world. And though Rogue One and Andor did a lot in their art direction to capture the look of the original trilogy, it is the focus on individuals that makes them feel more like those Lucas' original three films. As pointed out in the video, Tony Gilroy is putting a masterclass in how to worldbuild. The reason it feels so natural is that the worldbuilding simply is there as a vehicle for the characters to reveal themselves. Lore is there to influence things but it is not the focus itself. The sense of a world radiates out from the characters and its the relationship of how their actions play off each other that create that sense more than an external flag seeing a type of ship, or building, or creature to indicate the setting. The other reason this series seems to work so well is that Tony Gilroy seems to have experience with how movements work. I have been involved in activism and political engagement for change. Again, those movements are all about individuals network themselves. I really like how the writing of Andor has shown the detail with resistance movements, that it is easy for everyone to agree on what the problem is but the harder part is coming together for a consistent consensus of the solutions. Of all the fantasy settings that I have read or watch through the years, Andor has felt the most authentic to what I have experienced being in activist movements. That, in the end, is why Rogue One and Andor have felt the most "Star Wars" of Disney's contributions to the franchise than all the others: It is not just the focus on the Rebellion and its acts of resistance but , more importantly, the focus starts with the people within it and radiates the story out from that.

Great stuff, as always, Alan. Last night I finally started my post-season rewatch. Being reintroduced to the people of Ferrix in episodes 1 and 2 was amazing. The "little moments" carry so much more weight because I know these people. It was also great to once again experience the ending of episode 2, which is still AWESOME; The upbeat, drum-heavy rendition of the Andor theme, coupled with the shot of Cassian, looking determined and focused. That was thee moment for me. As much as episode 1 had already fully drawn me in, the end of episode two was the moment I fell in love with the show.

I find andor to be the most impressive star wars product in quite a while. It is adult without being vulgar. It is gritty, while still being sci-fi. The villains feel threatening without being cartoonish. The heroes have good goals but are not themselves pure. It is star wars for adults.

Many Online influencers/voices are Prequel and gaming fans who I feel dont understand the impact SW had on our culture PRE-COMPUTERS - Toys and backyard battles, conversations about bullying, and conversations about doing the right thing with your child using SW and Luke as a benchmark. Tony's writing is so good because it takes the time to thoroughly explore core dynamics of human history thru the lens of (this) fictional world building & story telling.

I was eleven years old in 1976 (Jimmy Carter was running for President) in 6th grade when I read about Star Wars - it had yet to even be named believe it or not. All we had was a couple pages that described a "medieval fantasy in space" - not a single picture but just a few pics of the Ralph McQuarrie concept artwork including Storm Troopers with light sabers, etc. I remember saying it sounded "silly" LOL and my teacher saying she thought it sounded "neat". Then I read the book about four months before release, then made my mother take me on opening day at the afternoon showing, like 3:45 or something. There were maybe at best ten other people in the theater - a week later it exploded in the national consciousness and everyone was talking about it. It was stunning, and people today have absolutely no idea how big culturally this film was in 1977. People think films like Titanic, Avatar, Pulp Fiction, even the Marvel movies were big, none of these were the cultural phenomena that the first Star Wars film had, not even close. The only movie that had approaching that level of impact I can think of was Saturday Night Fever, and I think we can all agree which one had lasting impact.

Many recent Star Wars outing have really suffered through putting fan service ahead of quality plot creation and character development. I think The Book of Boba Fett is a poignant example of this; the first few episodes had really engaging character development, but then devolved into an orgy of fan service by the end. Fan service is only intriguing to serious nerd/geek folks (which is actually a much smaller number than is generally assumed), and undermines writing that will stand the test of time.

Generation tech had the best brain behind it

It doesn't feel like Jon Faverau's and Dave Filoni's Star Wars, but it does feel like Tony Gilroy's version. It's possible that Gilroy's version doesn't work for everyone, but it sure works for me. I'll be back for season 2! I don't know if Tony Gilroy has ever mentioned it, but I see a lot of _The Grapes of Wrath_ in Andor. Cassian is Tom Joad, Karis Nemik is Jim Casy AND Thomas Paine from real life. The series was an ambitious one, and it might not have worked with a less than outstanding cast. But *everybody* gives spot on performances, and the result is Star Wars gold!

_Andor_ is by far some of the best Star Wars media to come out in a while. The writers were clearly going in a political thriller direction and they’ve engaged in enough history to weave that into _Andor’s_ story. Like the final showdown on Ferrix was essentially space Haymarket, and it was fucking awesome. Excited for new seasons.

I think is so interesting that the best depiction of the galactic empire is also the most similar to the way Isaac Asimov thought of a galactic empire, that is, a creature so vast that it becomes paralyzed by its own complexity, and thus fated to die, you can see that in the corruption, the bureaucracy, the oppression, the empire can never truly win because they are already falling down.

@generationtech Not sure if you or anybody else have brought this up, but why does Dedra not color her hair all the way blonde. She keeps her dark roots. This is deliberate. In film fully coloring hair is not hard. This tells me that Dedra is not of the inner planets or of the empire. Not matter how far above her station she climbs, her humble "roots" will always show.

The biggest thing I love about Star Wars is everyone has a story, everyone. If they don't, well written fanfiction exists. Star was is the most fleshed out fictional universe in my opinion

The way you are describing Tony Gilroy's work on Star Wars I am reminded on how Nicholas Mayer saved Star Trek. Prior to working in Star Trek II he knew basically nothing about the franchise and so was able to study the existing lore without preconceptions or bias. Also because he had to review the existing lore to understand it he was also able to find an existing storyline to expand apon and make the movie into a sequel to an episode of the TV series.

andor is such a welcomed change to the currently starwars tv shows and newest movie releases. though i do wish to see more from the imperial side of things. i would love to see the negative outcomes of what the newly forming rebels are doing to imperial citizens, because im certain alot of them who are loyal or even agree with the whole unification of the galaxy under one banner. i want to see that flip the roles make the rebels look like the bad guys, i want that perspective lol.

Well, Jon Favreau didn’t save Marvel with Iron Man….he STARTED the MCU with Iron Man.

I imagine that the restauranteurs, vendors, and entertainment workers on Niamos would have a problem with the empire arresting so many of their clients whom they rely on for income. I've never had any Star Wars get me thinking about those sorts of details, and that's a huge part of what I love about this show. It's people, not just Jedi and Sith.
