Surprised it took me this long to make one of these for king boletes, but here we are. Welcome back to Edible or Not!
Today we're talking about the Rocky Mountain King Bolete, Boletus rubriceps. I tend to call these porcini, but they also go by many other names! They have:
✅ Greasy, red or brick cap.
✅ White tubes that mature to yellow then olive.
✅ Stout white to pinkish stem with reticulation.
✅ The flesh doesn't stain.
These lovely mushrooms can be mycorrhizal with spruce, fir, and occasionally pine, but they seem to prefer spruce. They can be found during the summer mushroom season above 8,000ft in the southern Rocky Mountains.
Rocky Mountain king boletes are a choice edible mushroom. The small fist to softball sized ones are the best, but non-buggy large ones are good too. They can be dried and make great mushroom powder. They can also be frozen!

Always interested in mushrooms. But the one thing I, at least and in each case want to know about each edible mushroom and right alongside it is: what poisonous mushrooms it can be mistaken for. Honestly, unless I *know* which edible mushroom *cannot* be mistaken for a poisonous one, I just won’t even consider picking and eating any wild mushrooms.

@@danohanlon8316 understandable. It's something I try to include when I can, but there are regional differences for toxic look-a-likes and I'm limited on time for these videos. King boletes are super safe and great for beginners if you put together all of the traits I mention here you can't mistake them for anything else.

Imagine all the people a couple thousand years ago that did the testing to tell us what is edible. What kills you. And what makes you high.

Absolutely eatable! We have smaller species of this mushroom in Eastern Europe, I grew up picking them and they are very tasty! Cook them fresh picked, or dehydrate for winter time cooking. I live in USA now, for the past 30 years, and picking up mushroom is still my favorite childhood memory.

@@bluelightglass8209 do you pick mushrooms where you live now?

Mushroom picking is still popular in eastern europe, I live near the forest and when fall comes, sunday morning 6 am there is 20 cars parked in line near forest entrance, you have to be fast otherwise you have to go 5km into the forest to find something

@OrionAon 23 дня назад
@@kaylablock1425 you have a different species of king bolete up there. It's pretty similar and has most of the same ID traits. I think the caps on yours are more of a brown color.
