I love this guy - amazing chops, and a totally chill vibe and teaching approach. He makes great points here too, like the false idea that you must strictly alternate pick everything you do. When I was younger and I was into Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch, I was much more legato. I started getting into Yngwie and Paul Gilbert, and when it came out in, I guess 1988? I got Paul's Intense Rock video and started learning from that. And much like Luke says, instead of paying strict attention to what he was doing, I actually just kind of approached it with my own method that worked very quickly and very well for me. I just basically did the licks that he was showing, but when I crossed strings I would do two down strokes in a row, and at the time did not realize that was economy picking, but it's just what came naturally to me. I alternate pick strictly on a single string, but when it comes to crossing strings I'm all economy and it works great for me. Combining all techniques, sweeping, tapping legato, alternate picking, economy picking - you can really put together a great, well-rounded bag of tricks and style as a player. Great stuff Luke! 🤘🎸🔥
Many people just want to learn alternate picking because they think it's superior technic, but they don't really know what they need it for. So they struggle to learn it and hardly having any prorgess in terms of playing what they want. So what I think is you must choose your technic based on what you want to play, and not because "it's just cooler", and that way you can save a lot of time and progress faster.
Great video. I’ve got to suck it up and relearn alternate picking. You are so right about getting economy picking down then losing the alternate picking chops. Glad I’m not alone. I’m definitely going to check out more of your videos.
This is exactly what I went through. When I first started playing, I was naturally an economy picker. I got pretty good with it, thinking I was alternate picking the whole time. Eventually I figured out that I was not alternate picking, and that bothered me lol. So I began my quest of breaking my natural technique down in order to rebuild alternate picking. I spent a very long time only alternate picking, and although I got good at it, it was a mistake. I had completely neglected my natural economic picking style to the point that it now feels completely foreign. So now I’m completely relearning economy picking, and it’s been a real struggle.
I realized, after 12 years, that I didn't alternate picking cuz I was trying to play some Obscura riffs and I noticed that my hand was going wrong, with no pattern, no consistency
Hey, I like some of your ideas, but the link for you're alternate picking mastery course doesn't seem to work. Never got an email. checked my spam as well, nothing.
