"Just block" is GREAT advice in the right context. A LOT of people I play against in MANY games REFUSE to NOT wakeup with shit and they eat meaty and I almost NEVER have to mix them because they get hit my mids as oki.

“Know when to Block” is much better advice. You see pros challenging staggers and block pressure with either lights, reversals, or reflect but still actually blocking when they need to. All this should be considered ab what the enemy is doing instead of just doing everything you can to not block like constantly reflecting or doing some kind of reversal in the corner
@itraynell
@itraynell 3 года назад
Exactly. "In the right context." Some people expect you to block everything, and take every mix, etc. But that's not always best course of action. Sometimes "just blocking" puts you in an even worse situation than hitting a button or doing something to try and escape. Especially in a game like FighterZ where there are gaps in almost everything. If just sit there and block, then you would just sit there taking all of the opponents offense until you eventually get hit.

I think it’s bad advice in the long run buts it’s good/typical beginner advice. Like how somebody says “don’t jump”. The advice is typically geared towards a player who literally only does the opposite of that. Like a new player to street fighter who only moves via jumping and is constantly anti aired or somebody who only tries to wake up dp.

People see Go1 “just block” and think it’s good advice for all games. The only reason it works in DBFZ is cuz offense (usually) gets worse the longer it goes on cuz you spend your assists. In games like GG, if you wait for a character to end their turn on purpose, you are going to wait forever, because every char has ways to reset pressure infinitely, by their self. Defense has to be active in order to be effective

I think the difference between just block and press buttons on wake up need to be emphasized more. A lot of people take "just block" as not doing anything, while in context there could be a lot of things going on within a few frames. This is a great video though, awesome stuff LK
@rin-senpai7115

"Just block" is just to broad and like you said, needs context. If you keep getting hit by safejumps for example, you can say "just block on wake-up and stop getting hit by my jH, then I might do something different", but if you take that "just block" advice too seriously it can make you extremely passive and never challange or try to escape situations that you could have disrespected.

the thing about "just block" being said to a non decently skilled player, is that even if they tried attacking back after they do a basic combo against your block, they'd just get fucked up way more times than not which makes the main or only rthing to do is "just block". Unless you have enough meter for a teleport or just get grabbed anyway that's what it was like when I came back to fighters after a long time and play dbfz

@PathBeyondTheDark
@PathBeyondTheDark 3 года назад
DBFZ is a bad example for this considering players like Johnathantene, Nitro, and of course GO1 win primarily on the back of their defense. It is relatively easy to block in DBFZ compared to other fighters and can literally win you games outright, which is why it is frustrating when most refuse to do it and instead play RPS not caring if they win some, lose some. The general mentality of the average dbfz player REQUIRES "just block" to be said because it is the one thing holding most decent players back. For other games, yes it is bad advice.
@DXYS95
@DXYS95 3 года назад
Blocking is definitely not easy in this game if your opponent knows what they are doing. I build my teams in order to be able to 50/50 you at any opportunity, at that point all you can do is guess. But of course, if your opponent isn't doing that, you can technically react to everything. It's still not easy, since DR is pretty fast, but you can react to it as long as you know when to look for it
@PathBeyondTheDark
@PathBeyondTheDark 3 года назад
Also, I had the newcomer mentality until relatively recently. If you aren't absolutely clear in your intentions, they will take advice the wrong way. This includes BOTH "just block" and "Just block is bad advice." They could take this as "blocking isn't necessary." I'm not sure you are clear enough that this is not what you are saying. You may feel you are, but trust me people need things spelled out sometimes.

On everyone's introduction to a fighting game it's important to just focus on improving your blocking for sure. The way you block is different in every game, so that's the most important thing when you're learning. Going forward it's absolutely context based whether you just block or not, but blocking itself is a fundamental skill that you need to just get down in general, which I think is why people say "just block." Get the blocking down first, and then actual punishes and responses will come.

You should learn to handle pressure and that means just block imo I see too many hyper aggressive players now a days that crumble if they have to hold block for more than a couple of seconds. It’s also easier to learn what’s safe and unsafe when you focus on blocking, this teaches you proper punishing as well. you can learn a lot faster with a defensive/punish only style than the guy that is worried about getting the first hit, most damage, applying aggressive pressure etc. You can pressure you opponent by walking them back and blocking, especially in lower ranks where ppl don’t know how to deal with this other than too throwing something out.

Could you maybe do a vid on how to properly teach someone/help them get better? I’ve been kinda leaving my friends in the dust on my road to being able to play tourneys and when I beat one of them in a long set a few weeks back, he accused me of using him for free wins and I felt bad. Also, I have a sparring partner that is better than me and he does this weird thing where he will lose to me when I finally beat him and then he’ll say “Okay let me play serious now” and it’s really annoying and makes me feel like he’s playing me purely to fuck around, and when I ask for advice it’s really vague, so if you made a video on how to properly teach people maybe he would see it and take notes lmao.

Alright... but what else are you supposed to say then? Personally, I've never heard and have never told anyone to "just block" against someone like Broly. This advice is given to newer players that get hit on wakeup from sliding/lvl 3, characters without mix like ssj goku, safejump, because they're reflecting on every wakeup, etc.
@LordKnightfgc
@LordKnightfgc 3 года назад
I think advice like this needs context. For example, there are a bunch of characters in this game that have good staggers but no tool to actually hit you (like a command grab) - against those characters I would say "just block, all I can do is 6m and.DR). Specifics help here a lot.
@Fatboyftw32
@Fatboyftw32 3 года назад
Honestly I think Just Block is on the same tier as "Don't Get hit" in terms of being trash tier advice, they're both very simple minded ideas that state the obvious, and in no way help a player think about their gameplay in terms of specifics. Someone being given either piece of advice is more likely to just go "No shit" rather than being given any practical ways to apply those ideas. You might as well not give advice at all if you're gonna just say either of those two things.
@PathBeyondTheDark
@PathBeyondTheDark 3 года назад
You can't say that about the average dbfz player who has hit a wall. There are offensive powerhouses even online whose only real flaw is that they cannot block and lose the RPS on wakeup/neutral. If they could block, they'd be near untouchable.

I have an Idea. I know it has no correlation with the video but hear me out. What if the c assist that goes in the air(or all c assist but it would be too much) could be cancelled if the opponent makes you block a projectile or a physical attack while the c assist is doing his little animation at the beginning like the ki blast of Baby. The reason I think it's good is because that would significantly lower the number of players that play only c assist UI Goku, gogeta and vegeto since it's not as good as it were before and that would make them actually spend time in the lab to train with the other assist instead of just throwing it neutral. That won't change anything in combos but it will change the way they play in neutral instead of being a winning neutral tool. Of course if the c assist has already finished the animation and that he has already appeared it will still come out no matter what.
