Your videos are what convinced me to go the WMR route, and I've been using it happily for months now! Truly an excellent piece of hardware for the price. Really underrated
I own the Vive and the CV1, and I recently got the Samsung Odyssey from a friend from US....I'm very VERY surprised by the overall quality and especially for the inside-out tracking, which is pretty accurate...except for the controllers, since if you look slightly up they loose almost immediately the tracking and go back to gyroscope mode, but it's a fair enough compromise. Setup is stupidly easy...not even 5 minutes and you're good to go, which is gold compared to Vive/CV1. As a developer I'm also quite surprised that, even if Epic Games clearly refused to support UWP ( Universal Windows Platform ), it does work with the Unreal Engine 4, even if I have crashes sometimes, but it does work without any tweaking, so great! I also combined this HMD with the MSI VR One, so basically I have World Scale VR, and it's absolutely impressive. Great job Microsoft and Samsung, bravo!
I really hope there will be one standard for VR in a few years and i just can choose the headset and controllers which are fitting me the best and mix 'em up as I like while I will have all the software compatible with it. I think this will be necessary for VR to be really lift of in the mass market.
Ox King There won't be a monopoly in VR. Maybe standard or compatible tracking amongst all headsets, but that's about it's. Controllers are getting there though.
For Americans the price is a steal, I am getting this so I can enjoy Elite Dangerous and other sit down VR games. Furthermore my room is pretty small so not having the need to set up external cameras is awesome. Blunty did a great review and highlighted all the points I had questions about. I am def gonna get this headset.
Super useful! You literally uploaded this video right when I was considering what to buy. I just purchased the visor because its only $200 on amazon wtf!
Just an FYI Blunty, HDMI and USB 3.0 extensions work just fine with these headsets as long as you don't go too far. I'm using an Amazon basics 6ft (2m) extension on each cable and have no issues whatsoever.
FAQ (EVEN THOUGH THIS VIDEO ANSWERS IT!) Does *VRCHAT* work with Windows Mixed Reality VR Headsets? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vDLr9AtL7aM.html Prices have already dropped! A BARGAIN! links in description so you can get current prices.
The Dell one you used in the video unfortunately doesnt ship to my country. The blue acer vr headset ships though. Im guessing all the vr headsets you linked in the description are very similar to each but just different branding.
hey blunty, soz mate but in straya at places such as harvey normans it's still round $700 from what i remember, is there someplace else for australians to purchase MR headsets and controllers?
Why am I JUST NOW finding you? Professional, clean, family friendly (I know your streams you cuss a bit but haven't seen anything raunchy or just distasteful), thorough, no annoying into/outro... You just earned a subscriber!
So, uh... I'm using WMR with a two-year-old gaming laptop. Sure, *some* SteamVR games lag, but I've been blown away by the overall experience in SteamVR considering it didn't even meet the Vive MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.
Thanks for the review Blunty! Actually, after watching your other vids, I already had purchased the Dell Visor and I must say I'm enjoying my third attempt at VR much more with the WMR headset. The screen door and refresh of my OSVR 1 was so bad I would get terribly sick every time I wore it, and it didn't get much better with the PSVR. I had pretty much written off VR until I saw your latest videos and with the price drop I couldn't help but get the Visor for $230 and give it a shot. I played OrbusVR (MMORPG VR) for about an hour the first night, and then Audioshield for nearly 2 hours the second night, all with no issue at all and I had a blast. The tracking both times when switching to SteamVR was wonky for about the first 30 seconds but once it locked on there was little to no issue at all. I think now that I've had a taste of better VR, I may end up getting the Vive Pro in the future since being able to track the controllers anywhere would be nice but then again WMR might have a trick up their sleeve for the next iteration of WMR headsets too. Thanks again and keep up the good work! Glad to have you in my sub feed for the past few years.
I did the same after his other videos as well. It is really nice because I didn't even know these mixed reality headsets existed but after seeing his videos I jumped onto the Dell one in a heartbeat (well after some research into the other WMR headsets to decid which one was the best for me). I am extremely satisfied but it is sad there is no IPD adjustment since I have such a large number at 75mm but it doesn't bother me when it is set to 67mm.
Great review! I had picked up the HP version for $350. I think it is awesome. 99% of the Vive games work flawlessly. My kids think it’s a blast as well!
This is actually very impressive for the price. Though Vive and Oculus are better when it comes to tracking, I'd happily deal with the flaws of a WMR considering how affordable it is to the average consumer compared to the other headsets. Probably gonna pick one up after seeing this video. I can see this being perfect if they allowed use of an external camera in the future.
Thanks to you, I decided to get a WMR (Samsung Odyssey Plus to be exact as it was on sale for $300) and I have no regrets. I was able to play games like H3VR with very few issues. The tracking is so much better than I thought it would be.
I've got the Lenovo one, great headset. I hear its pretty much on par with the Dell version i just liked the darker colours more. Its also pretty comfy with my glasses, no issues so far but obviously your mileage may vary with that. One thing id like to see Microsoft/Vendors sell is a camera add-on for your desk.. so that you've got a 3rd camera looking at you for those times when you move your controllers out of your forward tracking range. Could just be an extra add-on option to help with tracking but currently out of the box it works well 98% of the time..
I got a Dell Visor earlier this month on the super cheap deals on Amazon (given confidence by Blunty's early impression vids), and I have no regrets! I did go to a Microsoft store to ensure they fit my glasses (the thicker plastic rim kind), and I have had no trouble aside from them catching in the flip up mechanism occasionally, but basically due to the lack of pressure on the goggles, I have not noticed any discomfort. I did want to note though for those running older cards or weaker VR ready cards (I am running a GTX 960 which is below recommended specs), that the WMR home constantly runs in the background, meaning that certain titles may perform poorly due to this backend resource draw. However with some tweaking on steam vr's quality settings (.6 supersampling) and lowering windows settings to low, I'm able to handle most of the apps in The Lab with no problem, and have played some simpler VR games on steam with no issue whatsoever. These resource issues seem to solely be between steam VR and Windows, as both environments run concurrently, so if you have a 1060 3gb or lower this is something you should be aware of. Plenty of information is on the windows mixed reality subreddit on this subject as well as exploits and workarounds, including links to extension cables that people have tested and confirmed as working for their headset. Highly recommend the Dell though, the build quality feels very premium and for me is a extremely capable experience, until the day I have a dedicated VR room and Valve puts out both the Vive Pro and Knuckles.
Crazy timing you started doing loads of videos on Windows mixed reality I ordered the lenovo and am still waiting so this is really informative for me.
My Quest decided to break out of nowhere so I dusted off my old Samsung Odyssey +. Still does a good job. I'm glad I never got rid of it. I refuse to buy another Oculus product.
There is a company making specialize prescription glasses for VR headsets, don't if there going to windows MR headsets but they currently do the main three PSVR, Vive & oculus.
I bought some glasses from zenni vision that easily fit inside the Rift as is. It's the same glasses they were taking the lenses out of to make custom 3d printed VR lenses they cost about $10
Try eneloop batteries if you want some that can last for many years. They tend to last for a lot more cycles than others, just be sure to take care of them with the right kind of charger. Opus makes decent chargers. Do *not* use the fast charger from Energizer. It will cook your batteries and you won't get many cycles.
A year late, but just bought the Lenovo Explorer for 230$ equivalent here in Norway. Its amazing, and for less than 1/3 of the Vive kit (780$ equivalent) its even better :D Add the fact that its super easy to use with inside out tracking and its really a no brainer for me :D
I know a lot of VIVE extremest and I wish they knew how good the WMR is. I have the lenovo and its only $200 at walmart WITH the controllers. The ONLY issue is you need proper lighting in the room which can be fixed by buying a 4 back of 1500 lumens bulbs for $4 at walmart.
Like others have said, this video helped me with my decision too. Got a Lenovo exactly a year ago on a sale at $200. Even now you find some models on sale at the same price directly from Micro$oft. It's one of the best gaming purchases I ever made, especially when you consider the value of the controllers, the Windows integration and the compatibility with SteamVR/OpenVR. A thing that I like a lot is how in the SteamVR driver for Windows Mixed Reality you can override the default movement and assign the joysticks for (right hand) forward/back/strafe-left/strafe-right and turn-left/turn-right (on the left hand). I hate the "teleport" controls or the touchpad navigation.
I got an Acer MR because of your review a couple months ago and I love it. I've been dreaming of getting an affordable VR headset since I was younger and first saw the Oculus when it was in development. Years later, got my first job. It was the first thing I got with my first paycheck! Haha. I love VR.
Hey Blunty love your straight to the point style. You can buy the HTC Vive break out box to extend your cables to your main PC. Here in the USA it’s $30 without the power supply. Don’t know how much it is over there.
Great review. Have been looking at getting Oculus Rift for my son for christmas. But after seeing your review and my son has tried the Mixed VR in store these are the best option. Easier to setup and cheaper than Oculus.
I would so love to buy this. I could buy it. If i lived in the united states. Local options are three times as expensive unfortunately. Maybe if i wait a couple months i will be able to afford one of these headsets.
As a Owner of the Dell Visor. I'm Very happy with my headset. Its honestly a great start to get into VR. I was close on getting an Oculus, but i just cant support Facebook. I will say in the future im hoping Pimax or LG delivers what i look for in vr. UNLESS microsoft continues there MR headsets and makes there Inside-Out Tracking Better
WMR headsets have gotten insanely cheap now, wow. I absolutely have to get one, since black friday is so close I'm going to wait another month still, but they're getting close to 100 dollars, with controllers. That's crazy! I didn't know WMR headsets were such a full VR experience, their name made me think they were some hololens stuff and I never looked into them, never hear them get brought up online either. Your video is packed with useful information, has me really craving getting a set for myself.
Thanks for this, I recently bought the Lenovo explorer for €200 (Netherlands) I sold my vive but realized I started to miss VR. But no regrets the vive was way too heavy for me. It hurt my nose after a while.
Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been genuinely surprised because I clicked on the link expecting this to cost ~$400 but It was a nice surprise to learn that they were actually $230. I might just buy them now.
I have a VIVE but I'm looking for a headset for my sim racing rig. Won't really need controller tracking. This may do, but if I change my mind in the future, I wonder if better controller tracking option upgrades will be available.
Excellent unbiased review. This has been very helpful to me as I am trying to enter VR on a budget. I found one of these headsets on eBay with controllers for $150 USD. Thank you Blunty! :)
This, for me, has been the best discussion on the vr landscape I've seen. I've been really struggling with what to get. First world struggles but still, I wasn't sure what to get. I think I'm going to get the lenovo. I've heard mostly positive things and my belief is that the samsung while better isn't justifiably better in terms of experience vs price difference.. Thanks so much.
How'd you find pixel response times in the Dell unit? I'll have to find that video from PAX Aus to see if you mentioned it. I saw a review of the Acer unit mentioning slower response times as a criticism when compared to the Vive. Was wondering if different manufactures used different panels for their construction. They seem very cool and I'd be keen to save up for a bit to give it a shot. The Aussie price is a real deal breaker though. At that point I'd just go for the Vive for the improved tracking as it's not far off. In Melbourne there's some VR arcade with Vive cubicles and while a higher res screen would be nice, I still had a blast with games. I could look at importing it yeah, but if I were to encounter a fault I'd hate to have to think of what I'd be dealing with for service as an international customer. Might have to bite the bullet after some saving though, or if the Australian price matches that for other regions. $300 to $350 Aud would be fair IMO, given the exchange rate and current US prices.
Thanks for the review, you have me really considering purchasing one of these. I feel much more informed about choosing between them now. Much appreciated.
I love the accessibility of WMR compared to traditional VR. My laptop falls just short of what's recommended for Oculus or Vive. Ive got a 1050ti, which IS good enough for WMR.The pricing is another huge plus. I can already find complete kits on Amazon for around $300 CDN total. That's a far cry from the nearly roughly 700 I spent to try out PSVR and its 540p per eye resolution. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on this.
Hmmm a good sign off for your VR vids. "Track you later!!" got the Rift here. It was cheaper than the Vive and I like the idea of 360 tracking. Although that windows MR headset does a good job behind
Another good vid, had one question. Do the same games on the Microsoft store (Arizona Sunshine, Superhot, Space Pirate) work the same or better than steam versions? I'm guessing the ones in the Microsoft store are optimized specifically for the Windows Headset, where as the steam version may not be, have you noticed anything?
It depends on your graphics card: windows runs it's environment in the background and seems to sap some Vram constantly, so aside from some workarounds you need at least more than 3GB Vram to be able to run them flawlessly. I'm not sure if there is a difference with windows apps but they do launch more seamlessly since there is no handshaking between steam and WMR. Still, I've been able to have a decent amount of fun despite still running on a GTX 960, which by all accounts shouldn't work, but it does (with caveats).
Thanks Zeph and Kane. Spot on Zeph, its the Windows VR environment that has to run simultaneously with Steam VR that giving me my performance issues. I downloaded Space Pirate on windows store and it runs 90% perfect, the problem is my computer.. Gonna have to upgrade..
Blunty, I greatly appreciate your VR related content. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have even known about Vive and Oculus' competitors, and for price VR is finally within reach. Got bit by the bug when one of my mates showed it to me last year and I'm about ready to scratch that itch. Thanks a bunch! Liked and subscribed.
great video. Not clear though - is the actual viewing quality actually better on this dell than oculus and HTC? I can set things up fine - looking for the best looking picture/quality from the lens. Also - can rift games play on this?
so I'm sold. 230 shipped to my door? As a former oculus and vive owner, the fact the resolution is even better and apparently after doing some more reading, this thing can play oculus games too? Done - much cheaper then the comp and no cameras everywhere. love it. I just hope the image quality and tracking delier. Thanks
Hey! I'm a fairly new viewer and my son and I picked one of the Dell visor bundles based on your videos. It better be good or we will travel the cyerspaces and find you ;) Thanks for these WMR videos, we have a lower end PC so the Rift and Vive were not an option for us. These video's were very informative compared to other WMR videos on youtube.
Blunty i fuckin love ya man. I almost just pulled the trigger on the rift but was slightly uncomfortable dropping the money. Then you show me this for way cheaper. thanks, liked
I'm really have a hard time deciding whether or not to go all in on a vive (which is obviously overpriced but the best experience for VR) or getting one of these MR headsets (The biggest bang for your buck and simplest set-up we'll probably ever see in terms of VR). Guess I have a little while to think about it.
Strange. Looking up the Dell MR in the UK, it's £400 for the headset and controllers right now. Other MR sets are all very similar in price. The full Vive system meanwhile has dropped to £500. Pricing of hardware is as fickle as ever I guess. I've been tetering on ordering some kind of VR setup for a while now, held back mainly only by how fast the market is moving. It's tricky to commit to a hefty purchase like this, knowing that significantly superior headsets are likely just around the corner. If I could have grabbed a decent enough set like this for £250 I'd have probably taken that, feeling secure that when something better came round it wouldn't be too much to write off. The ease of portability and setup would have added extra value even after upgrading. But at those prices, I guess I'm back to stalking hesitantly around the Vive store page. ._. Interesting video though. I wasn't actually aware these options existed.
Great video. I was on the fence with these because of the tracking problem when its out of frame but youve finally convinced me to give it a go. Just ordered it on amazon. If it doesn't work out ill just return it *I have prime so its a full return*. The hype is real! Cant wait! :D
Thankyou for this review. will most likely get this as it is more than enough for the virtual experience I am after without sending to much. Especially since Aussies do get ripped off a lot.
VERY thorough! I l loved the video. Really helped me come to a more informed stance on the VR thing. I think I will get one of those mixed reality headsets. Truth is they really have nothing mixed about them except for mixed feelings. I have a high performance computer and I like to get the most out of it. OLED is probably the best picture quality you can get, but I also need refresh rate and polling rate. I feel that polling rate is such an essential spec in VR that if it is not up to par it can negatively affect your experience in VR. This is coming from a hardcore gamer that uses only the highest quality perierals with high polling rate and DPI. For a first person shooter (VR) I see a lot of gitterie movement in your hands. That can be sickening because it doesn't feel natural, or at least I think that since I haven't actually used VR before. Honestly I got a little dizzy just watching this video in 1080p-60FPS. As far as how I will be using the headset which will be mostly seated, I think these are a WAY more enticing option over the more expensive counterparts. Also the fact that they have multiple partners gives people not only the choice, but the best technology at a competitive price. Great review. Must watch.
Got my Visor for $500 brand new in Australia. there are a fair few Dell Visors on eBay and gumtree going for cheap. People selling then cause they got it for free with their laptops from JB and harvey norman.
Yes, you need a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle and it must be on a usb2.0 connection to avoid the interference caused by 3.0. I have an extension running from one of the only 2 USB 2 ports on my Mobo to keep the dongle in visible range of the controllers, as a front mounted dongle is recommended.
WMR is amazing. Under $300 for a miracle of technology that puts you into fantasy worlds? This is going to sling shot VR games into the long awaited golden age.
Edgar Alonso Ayala Meraz i5 4590/ r5 1400 and a gtx 960/ Rx 460 for minimum I recommend an i5 6500/r5 1600 and gtx 1060 6gb/ Rx 480 8gb I run a i5 4690k and 1060 6gb and it works perfectly for my oculus
Processor: Intel Core i5 (6th generation) CPU, 4 or more physical cores AMD FX-4350 4.2Ghz (desktop), 4 or more physical cores GPU: NVidia GTX 965M/AMD RX 460 or greater DX12 capable discrete GPU Memory: 8GB DDR3 or greater Heres one I found on the amazon page for the dell headset, I've seen similar answers here and there. A good $1000 - $1500 gaming laptop should run it fine, in fact many headsets are bundled with such laptops.
if it was priced the same it is in the US here i'd buy it in a heart beat even though i'm not that interested in VR anymore. this is what a VR headset should cost.
Okay, felt the need to come back and comment because I grabbed this headset for 250+ a 6ft extension for USB 3 & HDMI 2 and holy crap...Okay take this as an entry level VR person here... This is REALLY impressive. I tried a few free games like The Lab, Accounting and Race the Sun as well as some demos and finally a few paid games after those sold me on my VR investment (Space Pirate Trainer, Gorn, Lucky's Tale). I didn't expect much given how expensive the other headsets are, and because of the nay-sayers I was kinda convinced that "these things gotta be too cheap to be comparable. Well, either I'm missing some godly experience or these things do the job just fine. They have a nice image, theyr'e easy as hell to set up, it automatically can show what you're seeing on a TV so friends can see when it's not their turn. This is a great way to get into VR. If you want to play the Oculus/Vive games you gotta do a youtube tutorial or two to get that going smoothly but overall even that was pretty painless. I was expecting VR to be attainable years down the road because of how pricey the big guy's headsets are but my goodness...It works a treat, room tracking and all! As far as behind the head with the controllers, I haven't seen much issue. The archery game or Space Pirate Trainer should have brought something to my attention but the worst I got was if my hands were at my sides, idle I'd sometimes see my hand/gun appear infront of me. But it'd snap right back when moved. Worth the money. If you want a more luxury one, go for the Samsung one since it's higher res + OLED screen and such. Same tech behind it though so it's easy to set up.
I'm thinkin of getting the Samsung varient. I know I would be close to the price of a Vive, but I love the convenience of not having to set up external sensors. Do you own a game called Hot Dogs Horseshoes and Handgrenades? If so, have you experienced any tracking issues when handling two handed guns? Thanks.
