Boy has San Antonio changed! A lot of people say it's never going to be the same.
I spent three days in San Antonio to bring you an updated look at what life is like in the 7th biggest city in America. The Riverwalk, The Alamo, the neighborhoods - all of it.

Nick, the Riverwalk used to be a naturally occurring tributary, fed by the waters of the SA River and San Pedro Creek. But the city has depleted the water levels so much those rivers don't flow until flooding rains are present. So they recycle that nasty water you saw in the Riverwalk area. They had proposals to build a desalination unit years ago, pulling water from the Gulf of Mexico. But they decided to build a new stadium for the SA Spurs instead with that money.

Thanks for that honest account of San Antonio. We have lived here and many years (retired military) and have seen the ups and downs of this town. As for HEB...we love HEB not because of their products but how they support Texas and other states (and Mexico). When there is a disaster, HEB trucks full of food and supplies are quickly on the road headed out to help the people...no charge. When you go through a check-out at HEB, you will be greeted by a cashier who really means it when they ask "How you doin' today"? It's a family owned company. Texasans would not tolerate the Butt family putting it up for sale. That's why HEB is loved in Texas (by most of us).

Fair assessment of San Antonio inside loop 410. But you missed outside Loop 410. The north side is roughly the same size as the west, east and Southside combined, if not bigger, because of the way development has occurred. Northside areas like Stone Oak, The Rim, Helotes, Alamo Ranch, Shavano Park, Hollywood Park, Bulverde, Boerne, etc… are very nice areas.

People who live here don't go down town, ironically. It's just for tourist and business meetings. Maybe a few times a year, locals go down there for events or shows, but not really. Some younger people get duped to moving into apartments down town, paying expensive rent and never leaving their Apts also ironically.

Well that's true of a lot of major cities. They put in bars and little niche restaurants and entertainment and only the young and homeless hang out there. Throw in a bus station or homeless shelter nearby and you have all the components of crime just waiting to happen.

I was stationed in San Antonio while in the Air Force, way back in the late 1980s. Since then, I've been back several times. It's a unique, colorful, and generally friendly city. The north side is definitely better than the south side, but both have things to see. A few highlights not mentioned here: the old Mission Trail, King William (a neighborhood of stately Victorian homes just south of downtown), and the Institute of Texan Cultures. And be sure to go up in the Tower.
@ressljs

I was station there 2001-2002. I'm not a fan of big cities, but for one that size, it's pretty nice. Even the bad parts of San Antonio didn't seem THAT bad. Of course I grew up near Philadelphia, so that hellscape has damaged my sense of "normal." I wouldn't be upset if I had to move back, although I'd pick New Braunfels as my top choice for the area.

Hey Nick, I talked to you about Nebraska awhile back. I now live here in San Antonio and foster dogs. The stray population is god awful. It is not rare to see dead dogs on the side of the road (or cats). Since a good portion of the people here are low income they don't spay/neuter because it is costly. Also, some will try and breed dogs for extra cash and when the pups don't sell they dump them. My rescue has rescued so many boxes of puppies just sitting abandoned (on top of adult dogs as well). Dog fighting is a big underground thing here as well. It is extremely sad. About the ghettos, I will say the west side isn't ghetto but San Antonio CAN NOT keep up with the copious amounts of people moving in. The construction is never ending.

I just drove from east of Houston to San Antonio on Interstate 10 and the traffic around Houston was just like Los Angeles. There are big open spaces of countryside between Houston and San Antonio that are really nice, ranch land I guess, but when I got near San Antonio the quality of the freeways, highways and roads is really bad with potholes everywhere, warped asphalt, and lane lines so faded that I couldn't see them.
