Bro your breakdowns are on point. Always good to see someone from a younger generation that did their homework and understands what they are talking about. One thing I'd like to add is that this was Pac's first album so there was a lot of pressure to deliver a hit, which meant make something trendy and relatable. That being said, think about Pac's decision making to roll the dice and put this out. Incredible.

12:52 This right here is why Tupac is the GOAT for me. He was so much more than that just a rapper. Great breakdown as always Knox. I'd love to see more Tupac breakdowns in the future. You could make a whole series just on him, as he was such a versatile artist.

Thank you guys for the reaction / review, with all the disrespect going on in the hiphop world today it's great to see two young men actually looking past the surface and being able to appreciate 2Pacs outstanding musicality. He's really untouchable and your comments reminded me of an answer I wrote a while back explaining Pacs impact to anyone who ever doubted his legacy: It's a similar argument of The Beatles or David Bowie paradox. Tupac has changed hip hop so much, and modern hip hop is molded in his image, you no longer see what is special about him because its no longer obvious. It's no difference than rap fans in the 90s asking what was so special about Rakim. By the 90s, everyone was using internal rhyme schemes, its was normal. People would listen to Rakim and think "So what? He sounds like everyone else.". No, everyone else sounds like Rakim, he was the first to do it. He's the one being emulated. It's the same with Tupac and his style of writing. Tupac broke down barriers in terms of what rappers felt they could rap about. Before Tupac came along rap was in a bit of a conundrum in the fact that rappers were obsessed with "Keeping it real" to maintain record sales. However keeping it real usually meant "keeping it consistent" which is awful from an artistic freedom point of view. That means if you entered the market as a gangster rapper, you better make 12 gangster rap tracks or your "fake". Likewise if you are someone like Will Smith, don't dare try to write something dark, otherwise you are fake. Stay in your place. etc. Tupac pointed out that this self-inflicted nonsense was keeping hip hop from growing up. Other musical genres suffered from no such restrictions. Nobody is going to bat an eyelid if Bruce Springsteen writes a happy go lucky song, then writes a song like streets of Philadelphia. Tupac pissed all over this. He wrote from a wide range of perspectives, unafraid to contradict himself. In fact, contradiction became his thing. He could write from the perspective of person A in one song, and then the exact opposite perspective from Person B in another song. Both delivered with what seems like absolute conviction. This is a sign of a brilliant songwriter, that he can deliver different views with equal passion and conviction that while the listener is listening in that moment, also believes it 100%. It takes incredible emotional intelligence to pull that off, and no rapper has matched it since. So what makes Tupac a great? Is it his lyricism (word play, metaphors, punchlines)? No. It's his emotional storytelling and his range. Without Tupac, there could be no Eminem. In fact, there is a big difference in Eminems writing pre-Tupac influence and post-Tupac influence. Then you have the way he writes, something that even the greatest lyricists struggle with. Hip Hop in general when it comes to "lyricism" concentrate on only a few aspects. Word play, rhyme schemes, similes, clever punchlines. Something that for example rappers such as Eminem, Tech n9ne, Biggie, Jay-z are all incredible with. But Tupac didn't fuck with that much, so if that's your ranking, it's easy for you to overlook his own unique abilities. Tupac does something that the above rappers struggle with, and that's visual writing. If we use a film/movie analogy, the above rappers are narrators. They are like the voice over in films telling you the story. Tupac is the cinematographer, he is showing you the story. For example if rapper was writing about them about to kill themselves by shooting themselves in the face, they would probably come up with a witty line about them shooting themselves in the face. Tupac wouldn't, he describe the scene without being explicitly obvious, he paints a picture and your mind fills in the rest. For example: They trying to bury me in worry I'm losing my mind; stare down the barrel of my nine My visions blurry. Here Tupac has created a scene, in very few words. He's contemplating killing himself, although he never said that. He described it. He's pointing a gun at his own face, and his eyes are filled with tears. He's clearly in a dark place, but he never once said he was crying, he described it like you would see it in real life, his vision is blurry, because his eyes are filled with tears. What he is looking at is the blurry image of the barrel of his own gun through his eyes. That's how Tupac writes, that's how he makes the listener emotionally connect with him, because you can't help be transported into the scene with his visual story telling.

2pac is a legend, one of the GOATs, and by a large margin. The time flies too, it's crazy to think that many people even in the 20s never really listened to Pac.

2Pac's talent to not only to make great music about serious topics but also how he says the words and make them hit is just insane. Like many people associate Pac only with his more aggressive songs but you also have songs like this one, Dear mama, Keep Ya head up, Unconditional Love, etc... Pac was the definition of being versatile, being strong and ready for war while also don't be scare to show vulnerability and trying to educate.

Awe. Tupac 🥺 He turned me onto rap and taught me to actually LISTEN to the words and stories being told. Guess you could say he woke me up too. I was 11 or 12 when this came out and at the time I couldn't even imagine this happening to me or anyone I knew. I remember going through a lot of his songs and being like wow... I understood the privilege I was born into. He taught me earlier than many learn. He was my teacher about America for a short period of time. Miss him so much. 😢 Another great video. Thank you, Knox. 💙

Tupac was the one who started making deep songs which then became a trend and then many mire rappers started making deep expressive songs before that everyone was just making hardcore street music or how great rapper they are and feelw were doing conscious rap at that time but tupac mixed conscious rap and deep emotional rap and made a mark

Brenda's (Brenda's) Got a (got a) Baby Say that one more time Brenda Brenda's Got a (baby) Baby I hear Brenda's got a baby But, Brenda's barely got a brain A damn shame, the girl can hardly spell her name (That's not our problem, that's up to Brenda's family) Well let me show ya how it affects the whole community Now Brenda really never knew her moms and her dad was a Junky, went in death to his arms, it's sad 'cause I bet Brenda doesn't even know Just 'cause your in the ghetto doesn't mean you can't grow (you can't grow) But oh, that's a thought, my own revelation Do whatever it takes to resist the temptation Brenda got herself a boyfriend Her boyfriend was her cousin, now let's watch the joy end She tried to hide her pregnancy, from her family Who didn't really care to see, or give a damn if she Went out and had a church of kids As long as when the check came they got first dibs Now Brenda's belly is gettin' bigger But no one seems to notice any change in her figure She's 12 years old and she's having a baby In love with the molester, who's sexing her crazy And yet she thinks that he'll be with her forever And dreams of a world with the two of them are together, Whatever, he left her and she had the baby solo She had it on the bathroom floor and didn't know so She didn't know, what to throw away and what to keep She wrapped the baby up and threw him in the trash heep I guess she thought she'd get away, wouldn't hear the cries She didn't realize How much the the little baby had her eyes Now the baby's in the trash heep balling Momma can't help her, but it hurts to hear her calling Brenda wants to run away Momma say, you makin' me lose pay The social workers here everyday Now Brenda's gotta make her own way Can't go to her family, they won't let her stay No money no babysitter, she couldn't keep a job She tried to sell crack, but end up getting robbed So now what's next, there ain't nothing left to sell So she sees sex as a way of leaving hell It's paying the rent, so she really can't complain Prostitute, found slain, and Brenda's her name, she's got a baby Baby
