E-bikes, or pedal assist mountain bikes, are a hot topic right now with both sides having arguable points. But if you aren't racing or being competitive on your MTB, then shouldn't the focus be more fun? I took my roommate Brig out for his first ever ride on one to see if...maybe he can have a bit more fun?

This is Brig.
Brig loves everything about mountain biking. He lives in world famous riding destination of Squamish, just to be closer to the trails. After only riding the whistler bike park for years, he realised that a bike that could pedal would mean more access to trails, and he likes nothing better than ripping down a nice flow trail.
But there’s one thing that Brig like, and he’s not the only one. In order to get to these amazing trails, you’ve got to earn your turns and well...Brig doesn’t like that bit. Now here’s the thing - Brig isn’t a lazy dude. He works long hours at the dock on tug boats and in his spare time he’s always hiking, in the Gym or just being in the outdoors. So by the time it’s time to ride, he’s already hurting.
Now this isn’t a video about how much better I am at pedalling uphill compared to my buddy, it’s a video about looking at ways that would make it more fun to ride together. Because really it’s Brig that gets annoyed at being left behind, not me.
After years of riding the park, this dude can go round a berm fast. Even on this lap he was dropping me pretty quick.
Luckily for us, Republic Bikes who are a supporter of my channel had an e-bike demo day. I know it’s a controversial subject, but I have absolutely no problem with e-bikes and I wanted to see what Brig thought about them.
Like any other shop demo, they swapped over Brig’s pedals while he watched on and got him set up on the bike. Making sure Brig knew what he was doing with the motor controls, we would head to a different area of Squamish and hit up something a bit more technical.
This climb is a little steep and he would normally walk up the whole thing. This made the whole ride take longer, but now I have a rider that I can chase and pushes me to go faster up the hill. But again, you knew this would happen, I knew this would happen. What I wanted to find out was how Brig felt about it.
There we go - we were having more fun. That’s all we wanted. But what about the downs? Will he be able to ride the same going down a trail? We dropped into the black rated trail Rupert to find out.
By this point he never wants to do Rollercoaster, which is awesome by the way, and there’s a lot of time waiting at the bottom for him to catch up - something that annoys Brig. But here we are, now having an absolute ball.
You don’t need to tell me that e-bikes are something that not everyone is a fan of, I am up to speed with the land access issues that are coming up in America and other mountain bike areas. But for me and Brig, this e-bike would mean we can ride together and both of us have the same amount of good times and probably go on more rides. But would he buy one? Maybe hit the subscribe button if you want to find out….

That’s good to see. I know I walk up a lot but I’d rather get in shape/use 1x12 then get an ebike because I do this for fitness that I can enjoy. That and I’m bloody cheap.... I do very much think they are a great idea for the friend that hates climbing. And being involved in bike park type areas myself I do want to do my best to keep them open to ebikes.

Fun is what it's all about. I say this all the time. I'm 64, have had a tumor in my neck and cancer in my lower tongue. I was racing and riding mountain bikes up to age 57 when the cancers were discovered. Chemo and then radiation put me down for 3 years before I was able to start riding again with all my very fit and fast biking buddies. I was always the last to catch up as they politely and patiently waited. My breathing sounded like Darth Vader having a spaz attack. When Covid hit the scene, my bike shop owner best friend let me ride a demo Intense Tazer. My 2 or 3 day demo turned into a 4 month demo as the Intense rep stopped moving demo bikes while Covid was rampant. When I heard of the ORBEA RISE, I knew this was the bike for me. Now that I have it,,,,, I know this was the right decision. My shop owners son is now 21 and is a technical very fast rider, and now I can ride on his wheel, and stay amongst the group. Sometimes they will even use me as the rabbit to chase for a good fast pace. This video exemplifies the proof that ebikes have a fantastic place in the world. That place is in any riders garage, living room, or maybe even your bedroom,,, just waiting for the next session called,,,,, FUN!!!!!!!

@@Adriano70911 Nah, just born with a slightly asymetric skeleton (especially chest and feet), and because of resulting posture problems, including a one-sided flat foot, my right knee sometimes starts to hurt when it's under constant load, e.g. cycling uphill. The pain started at age 16 or 17, and every time I tried to cycle uphill in my early twenties it started to hurt after a few minutes. I bought an e-bike at age 26, and since then I regularly cross the local hills to get around, instead of relying on bus and tram, which would have been impossible before. So if you love cycling, but can't because of knee problems, trying an e-bike might be a good idea. Maybe ask your physician, because some injuries might get worse from cycling.

I totally agree with this video. After being raised on Manual Bikes to the point that I am having a hard time even getting rid of my 20-30 year old bikes as there is still blood and my skin hanging off of them if you know what I mean. So I just recently bought my first eMTB. I love it. I rode it twenty miles the first ride through the desert around Quartzite AZ area and man I had fun. Oh and by the way I only rode on trails or roads when I absolutely had to. That is something I could never pull in a Manual bike. Even when I was 16. Now I can go almost anywhere. Even through deep sands. And because I only used the eBike motor when I needed to, I got through the whole twenty miles and was still full on my Battery when I returned to my starting point. While having incredible fun. Now all I have to do is make the bike “Mil spec” (Rick proof) and I’ll go wild. I’ll never go back because of the whiners who think there is no room for eBikes on trails etc. oh and I’m not a racer anymore because we’ll I’m 66.

i grew up rarely ever riding a bike. mostly due to not living in an area where i could regularly go out and ride. so when i went to college and decided to get one, it was tough. at the start, i was going slow and using so much energy that i would end up walking to class with my bike. it was a mountain bike (which isn’t horrible! i’ll still be using it for trails one day) so it wasn’t great for going around campus… but it helped me fit in with most of the other students riding bikes. i just got a used ebike from my grandparents, and i’m nervous about going on campus and being judged. that line “if you’re not racing, how is it cheating?” it lessened my nerves. thank you for this video man. it really helped!

I bought a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Alloy about a month ago and now I am able to ride longer and also explore more areas and the Levo is great going down flow trails and techy downhills. One of my favorite things about it is how well it does uphill switchbacks. I just sold my Santa Cruz 5010 to a young dude who is just getting into the sport, the 5010 was a great bike but I needed help on steep uphills!

In 75' I had a beautiful full Campy 531 double butted, bright yellow and black beauty. I was a semi-serious Roadie when most people riding bikes had no clue what cleats were. Those last few years of High School I was riding 100+ miles a week. Then I sold the bike to get my first car, life took over and now I'm 61, 80 lbs heavier with far less strength or cardio endurance, and tho I wanted to buy a nice road machine, the few times I'd given it a try in our hilly city I felt like I was going to stroke out the minute I hit a hill. No fun = No riding.., and no riding meant no improvement. Four weeks ago I bought what I consider one of the first somewhat serious carbon E-Road bikes, and today the odo reads 144 miles, most in Eco or Touring, the bottom two modes at a total average of over 16 mph - All our Hills included. The main point tho - FUN As F..k! I'm loving the Ride again and hills are NOT a killjoy issue any longer. I still huff and puff intentionally for much of the ride, I still ride to leg burn levels, and I churn up hills because now I can. I'm not doing lots of out-of-the-seat yet, but that's just a balance issue, but the ride once again feels like the old days when I loved it. From 0 miles and total couch potato for the last two years, my job sitting in a cube all day, 2+ hours commute a day, to 144 miles in four weeks - While Having Fun Too! Now I'm back in the gym too, and feeling upbeat about all the exercise crap I previously had no love for whatsoever. I can stomach the rower or the treadmill any day if I know it helps me be better on my cool new bike tomorrow. Only time will tell, the situation could have been much different in a flat city, or maybe I'll burn out, but I doubt it now. I mean, people, the way I feel now about all this is crazy! I suggest these machines are a game changer in ways others don't even yet realize. There are many aspects to the convo about E-Bikes, but I say if it get's people out enjoying riding even in the hills, if it lends more downhill flights to a MTB day, how can it be bad?

Nice story, I think this may have sold me on getting an EMTB. I'm a currently out of shape ex Moto X and Enduro racer who misses the days when land access wasn't such an issue. This is EXACTLY what my experience was! I visited friends in Colorado and I'm from sea level in southern Ga, I didn't want to burden them and the other riders with my burning legs and lungs, walking the uphills while those who were acclimated kept pushing on. A $100 a day e-bike rental changed all of that. I was able to use different power levels for different terrain so that I was doing the "right amount of suffering" (lol), and had a freaking blast. Like this guy I can totally bomb downhills but I have crap endurance, the e-bike was perfect and I'm pretty sad that the bike shop was selling their units and not getting any more because of the controversy over where they are allowed. Understand that this doesn't do all the work for you! The software is amazing and it puts in just enough energy when you peddle. This is an awesome tool for bringing up your endurance by allowing you to stay out longer and bring your body up to par without it being discouraging and hurting like hell.

I personally don’t like E-bikes for one reason. People say that they are good for people who are getting discouraged because they can’t climb a hill. Now unless that person has some sort of heart problem or muscle problem etc. I don’t think they should just get one just because they are giving up. Mountain biking is about building skill and pushing your limits so I think being lazy is not a good reason to get an E-bike.

Sounds good, though realistically you have to hammer pretty hard to get a decent pay off when riding. With electrons, it would be less still. In the bike touring world (where you ride all day long and haul a ton of camping gear), There is this thing I have heard often which is that if you ride less than 50 miles a day, you can easily put on weight. And the reason is that riding 50 miles stimulates appetite, and maybe you get some high carbs for food. I know I average 90 miles a day (not so hard, 10 miles per hour for 9 hours will do it), and the first time I did it for 2 weeks I dumped a ton of weight, second time, not much change. So it isn't all about weight, but it is interesting how the cardio went through the roof, and leg muscles bulked up a lot. But it is still something one does while sitting on a very efficient machine.

At 54 my body needs some help. I've been riding and training on mountain bikes since the mid 80's ( still own a Ross Mt. Hood) I'm just looking into these bikes now. I like to climb so that's not an issue but I want to ride longer and enjoy the riding more.

I am really grateful to who ever designed it and there is no doubt that e bikes have there place

Very educational video about e-bikes. I am still recovering from a broken ankle and I was very worried about not being able to put the power down as before. If that was the case I would totally consider an e-bike. Luckily I am making a full recovery and will pedal on my own for years to come. Whatever gets people into riding should be allowed. Riding is therapy, and for anyone disabled, injured or any other reason... let then wheels roll. Imagine being able to ride with your GF and don't have her complain the whole ride!

I love to climb. Mountain bikes are designed to climb. My trail bike has no problem climbing and I have a hard tail. When I can't get to the dirt trail I will ride on the street and am constantly besting the street bike riders on hills. They soon pass me on the flat stretches, of course, but my bike can climb. It also builds stamina _and_ strength at the same time which is a double benefit. That's not to say that e-bikes don't have a place though. They give many people the opportunity to ride again though they might not be able to because of health or injury. I wish I had one when I bruised my kneecap as I couldn't ride for a couple of months after that and still had to wear a brace afterwards to start riding again (against doctors orders).

I've just ordered my first e-bike, and I'll have it in a few days. I've liked riding a bike all my life, but it was always so tiring that I ride MUCH less that I'd want to. Now, I firmly believe the e-bike will rekindle my love of riding a bike.

I got my Canyon Neuron:ON just couple of weeks ago, but already I feel it was one of my wisest moves ever. I have never had so much fun riding a mountain bike! You're able to ride longer distances, climb hills you never thought were possible, and you don't feel so beat up after a day of riding. That means you can ride again tomorrow! Another huge plus for me is the added weight of an e-bike. I come from riding motorcycle enduro and motocross, I've never had full confidence on a light mountain bike, and I'm much more in tune with the heavier e-bike. I don't care about the naysayers, but you do hear a lot of that negative crap. I think that will pass, as more and more riders try out an e-bike and get hooked.

Well i finally went to an E-bike about 7 months ago - loving life. I live in north Georgia very hilly and mountains a hour plus away and the climbs were killing me too and wearing out my Eagle. Now i rarely use lower 2 or 3 gears and never use Turbo mode. The 2022 Trek Rail 5 was around $6K. It’s a good entry point for e-biking. I have upgraded the battery at purchase and now am upgrading the fork. It’s a great frame and motor the components a little weak but those can be upgraded over time.

Here in Belgium the e-bike is popular with the older generations. Previously only professionals would attack the hills in town (The Wall) but now granny has no problem mounting a 20% slope with groceries in the saddle. 86 and riding everywhere.

@@ernestfrigelj2876 No I really don't because if not for an ebike I wouldn't ride at all. A few short years ago I rode all around town and if I lived in a flat place I still could. I still get a work out on it, it has a throttle but I usually only use it occasionally to catch my breath for a block or two. Being a class 3 it can go faster if you put it in a low gear and pedal at a decent cadence no force applied than the throttle gives. Only thing I'm cheating myself out of is being lazy in a recliner.

Crazy expensive is as with all things RELATIVE. Ythere are a bunch of manufacturers who make cheaper ebikes. Just be realistic about your desires and capabilities and buy accordingly. I paid a bit under fife grand for mine but I often ride alone (single) and need reliability. So I’m continually upgrading my eBike to make it as tough as I can. Plus I use GPS trackers and sattelite commo devices in case of an emergency. So with bikes there is no reason you can’t ride for adventure or even travel if you want.

You should learn that pedalling and walking use different muscles. Hiking is several times less tiring than pedalling uphill. His pedalling muscles are lacking endurance. That's why he frequently dismounts and walks in order to rest his pedalling muscles. Using an e-bike for several months could help him have longer pedalling sessions at a lower effort level, which will help build the required endurance in those muscles. And then he can switch back to his regular bike and make the full climb unassisted.

I've taken some heftier E-bikes down some decent "double black" jump line trails before. It starts to feel like a blend of motocross and mountain biking. Having the heavier bike is really interesting because it's got no problem moving the weight. Jump take-offs feel zippy, and once you are in the air it feels almost like you're straddling a dirtbike. Throttle is done by like quarter-peddling at precise times, just a real fun experience, I would highly recommend an E-bike for anyone.

It's all about having fun with your mates so if an e-bike helps then hell yes. I used to dis them but I have no right to judge, I mean gears make it easier so why not a motor. I now think they are brilliant at getting people to ride more and that has to be a good thing 👍

Until your mates don't want to ride with you as biking as a group is about shared suffering, even the super fit guy will have muscle burn and be suffering, he just trained for it, getting an ebike because frankly, you're lazy, is just going to leave you friendless or riding with other ebikers on your motorbikes.
