I was a kindergarten teacher. During my training I remember learning that when a child's arm is long enough to reach up and over their head and touch their ear on the other side, they are ready to read. In my experience it turned out to be true. Physical development must coincide with the development of the part of the brain that is responsible for reading.
I just tried this and I can't do it (and I'm an adult who can read and eat grapes without choking). I have cerebral palsy with limited range of motion though. I have short arms and a big head too, so it's probably a combination of things that prevents me from being able to do it. I bet a lot of little people would have trouble with it also.
Well, it would make sense. Once our arms are long and strong enough, we tend to move onto more physical activities, which would then probably require more motor and mental skills to accomplish.
I saw this video and tried this on my baby when she was 4 months old. To my surprise her arms are long that they touch! Certainly she is not ready to read😂

Being a grandmother times over, it tickles me that newer moms are only realizing this. There is safety in design. Little babies don't need to reach farther than the tops of their own heads. Have fun! It's the same with every baby. 😉
