This is why fighting is allowed in pro hockey

Fighting has been an officially accepted part of the hockey at the professional level for almost a century. In 1922, the National Hockey League incorporated Rule 56 into its official rule book, which governed what it then called "Fisticuffs" as an official part of the game.
Today, the section of the NHL rule book dedicated to fighting is Rule 46. It says that referees are given “very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule.” According to former NHL official Kerry Fraser, fighting is technically a rule violation.
Any player who fights is automatically subjected to sitting in the penalty box for at least five minutes. Additional penalties, including ejection, can be imposed if deemed necessary by the referee.
We sought to understand why this sanctioned violence is still embraced by the league, which, based on a recent interview with its commissioner Gary Bettman, doesn't appear to be going away any time soon.
Bettman called fighting a "thermostat" for the game, and that it "may prevent other injuries."
According to author Ross Bernstein, who wrote the book "The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL," fighting is a way for the sport to "police itself," and to remind players that there are consequences for stepping over the line during play in such a way that "the Code" is violated.

RoBro Hard to be a bitch when you're fighting bare knuckled with no guard, as opposed to padded gloves. (not to say boxers are little bitches, but it sure doesn't help their case by wearing padded gloves). Also, fighting in hockey does have a purpose, to discourage players from taking runs at another teams star player in hopes of injuring them to gain an advantage. Their are also rules for fighting in hockey, some which are specified as more serious penalties by the rulebook, though most are unwritten (though known by all players and practiced by most all).

Damned rights... Unfortunately, I'm not one of them...(too uncoordinated...would spend more time hanging off the boards trying to keep my skates under me). but my son plays. Yeah, the pussies down south would probably piss and moan until fighting got banned entirely...and it just turned into figure skating. God help them if anybody in the stands got hit by a puck and got killed. That might get the whole sport wiped out.

So people that pay $600 to be on a waiting list to pay big bucks for season tickets then finally when their turn comes up they will stop going if somthing that happens in about 1 out of every 6 games stops happening? I dought it. I don't mind fighting. I feel after a real cheep shot it has its place. Let's also not forget when there was fighting recently say 10 years ago it was not the fights of the 80s and 90s. It was 2 players only on the team for that and they would wrestle it out and one would end up falling on top of another. I have never heard an arena louder for a fight then a goal for the home team. Hockey is the best sport there is. Fighting is just a small side note. Anyone that really follows it knows that.

Fighting should be allowed because its the quickest and easy way to resolve tension on the ice and its entertaining to watch. Would you rather have some player get smashed from behind or get hit in the nuts by a stick or a simple 30-60 second fight that ends conflict and determines a overall winner

I'm pro fighting in hockey but always hated this argument. No, what they want is for the game to be policed the way most professional sports are policed Which is by enforcing suspensions and big fines to discourage fighting. Personally, I think it's a part of the sport just like, skating, scoring, passing or checking is. The very first pro hockey game ended in a brawl and hockey isn't hockey without fighting. It's comparable to arguing that nfl should be touch football with no tackling because it's 'dangerous'.

StartGame88 your dead wrong and don’t know a thing about hockey if you think nothing would change if it was taken out of the game. This game would be a lot more dangerous if fighting was taken out, most people understand that but people like you will think that makes no sense. Also poor attitude of sportsmanship? Dumb. Hockey is the most passionate game there is and also the toughest game to play. Also most concussions come from players getting checked into the head not fights. Reasons why players might fight someone... if a player makes a cheap hit on someone from behind and their head goes into the boards. Sorry hockey’s the best game in the world unlike the soft shit like the nba.

@StartGame88 We all know there is more to the game than just the game. When I was young my father took me to a minor league game and there was a bench clearing brawl and the crowd went wild I still remember it to this day. It's part of the culture and the energy of the experience. Professional sports are really in a cross roads. The NFL makes rule after rule trying to prevent injuries and concussions it sucks the soul out of it. I think professional athletes just need to accept they are taking a risk of injury making shit loads of money while being a star. If I go weld on a more dangerous job I get paid more. It's my decision to take that risk.

A mouth guard's function is not to protect teeth. It is to encourage the user to keep their jaw shut in order to aid in preventing concussion. It does however have the unintended benefit of protecting against bruxism damage to teeth through clenching or grinding teeth against each other. You'll still loose teeth if you get punched square in the yap while wearing a mouth guard.

Nobody is ever going to die in a fight in the NHL. The odds of getting punched in the perfect spot to kill someone in one shot are next to none. The fights are also too regulated for anyone to suffer major damage. Once someone goes down it ends. The other player isn't allowed to just beat their opponent until satisfied. If anything someone would die from a big hit or a skate blade long before a fist fight.
@demonpride1975
@demonpride1975 6 лет назад
@jake are you kidding me, most refs won't allow fights to get to that point. pretty much the unwritten rule is, if a player lands on his knee during a fight, the ref has to call it. fights are not allowed to get to the point where a player knocks another down, and beats him mercilessly.

Diving is actually a minor penalty in hockey now, but your point is still valid. Someone almost died from a skate blade a few years back. A player went head over heels and his skate blade cut the jugular of another player. The doctors and other people that work hockey games are trained for this very thing, and their quick work literally saved his life.

Fighting serves as the games player controlled self--regulation. When fights are allowed and you have players on your team not afraid to fight, then you will see less dirty plays and risky hits. Why was Gretzky able to produce mostly unopposed? He had a big guy on his team that would rip your head off if you targeted him. What you see now in the league since they've cracked down on fighting and less and less enforcers come into the league is that players resort to dirty hits, leg sweeps, slashes, chops, elbows, etc in order to enact their frustrations or revenge. Not only are most of them tied to smaller fines/penalties, but they're much easier to conceal in the hustle and bustle of the fast plays. Before, if someone speared one of your teammates, it a was an invitation to fight, and it would be settled. With a fight, both players are expecting the aggression and have the opportunity to defend and protect themselves, whereas with all the aforementioned dirty plays, the victim has no chance to defend themselves. This opens up a bigger risk for injury. The current rules encourage players to be sneaky and dirty, and also encourage putting yourself in dangerous positions (turning your back to an oncoming defender to draw the boarding call, for example), and leads to much more hazard to the players than fighting ever would.

I agree with all of what you just said. And i love a good fight every now and then, especially when its for a good reason. Theres nothing wrong in my books with the occasional brawl to keep each other in check and put on a show. BUT, people were dying, or at least getting lasting physical and in some cases psychological damage. That is why fighting is being slowly removed. Just look at derek boogard. He was a powerhouse of a fighter, but he said on multiple occasions that most of the time he just wanted to play some hockey. But being the baddest goon in the league, he always had people trying to throw down with him. He slowly just deteriorated, struggled with therapy and drug problems, and those issues eventually took his life. I honestly think that instead of removing fighting, they should regulate it. If an official sees two guys getting heated, they should go check it out, listen to what theyre beefing over and if they think its a worthwhile reason to have a tussle, let them go at it for a minute or two. If its over some bullshit or just trying to look good, they should just have to go to their benches and cool off. It would keep it as part of the game, but at the same time minimize the damage caused by it.

And very quickly the one thing I found amazing about the NHL is that there weren’t more fights. I’d never gotten into a fight in any of the other sports I’d played, however in hockey - and I’m talking Adult League non-contact hockey - I’d gotten into a couple within my first few months. The only people who would want to ban fighting in hockey are those who have never played hockey because they don’t understand its significance.

I say that instead of settling a tie in a shootout, we have both teams clear their benches against each other in fisticuffs. The team with the last man standing wins. Need to challenge a goal or penalty call? Fight the ref. Coach used all his timeouts and needs another one? Send in an enforcer to fight the dude who controls time on the scoreboard. Playing an away game and the fans keep booing you? Kick their ass. Are you a spectator and in line for the washroom during intermission? Fight for dominance of the urinal.

The reason fighting stays isn't just because it was there yesterday, or because fans enjoy it. Hockey is the only major team sport without regular stoppages. Soccer might not stop, but it's so spread out that guys spend a lot of time not doing anything. Basketball doesn't exactly stop, but every time someone scores, there's a few moments to slow down and regroup. Baseball and football are turn-based sports, after every play, you stand around for a bit. I've seen hockey games where play doesn't stop for 8, 9, 10, 12 minutes in a single stretch. Sure, players get changed out, but that's still a lot of time for people to get pissed.

Dave Toussaint - You are serious now? Comparing diving? Soccer, 10+ dives per game, Obvious ones! Hockey 1-2 possible/clear dives per game. One uses blades to balance 210++lbs on other one uses regular shoes. Balance is a huge factor too.. On the otherhand Soccer is a joke.. even when they fake, they play dead or GSW'ed.. They use their head to clear a ball shot 30-40ft up in the air with forward momentum meaning it will hit somewhat hard on the forehead. Getting a ball "shot" your way and hit the leg (zidane) you simply developed ALS and died? Out of breath after 50m dash trough opponents defence and you enter the "box" all of the sudden your legs doesnt work..

Lordputrik93 My original response was a response to the man claiming fighting help reducing cheating and diving. Which is false. The culture of the sport, the way it is officiated, the contributors affectee diving and cheating. Furthurmore, fans can also regulate the game. If all the fans loathed an aspect of the game... Sooner or later, it will disappear. Changing the subject, I've rarely saw cheating and diving in rugby and football as much as in hockey. And guess what? There's no fighting allow.
@broken98100
@broken98100 6 лет назад
Fighting helps in a way, if you never played hockey you wouldnt understand its that simple, i cant make you understand that aspect. I bet alot of fans doesnt like diving in soccer, but is it gone? has it changed anything? does the divers get reviewed like in hockey and fined afterwards? You rarely saw that since you are biased, everyone has played soccer its just that simple, but not everyone has played hockey, not to a level where you would understand the meaning of the toughness and way of handling things. I mean look at how long it took to ban Suarez who bites every now and then.. look at all the clear dives just in 2017 when a player is exhausted and in the goalkeeper box. On a sidenote, often when diving occur in hockey its not appriciated by anyone, you can even find post game interviews with team-mates saying pretty much "he went down a little bit to easy" Diving in hockey is frowned upon in every way. Doesnt seem like it is in soccer. Alot of the soccer fans states "its a part of the culture" or "way of the game" to gain advantages trough cheating. I've played both sports, and i must say, since the ref in soccer wont take aid from a camera ref to make sure a situation is called correctly i will never have respect for it, Just by having one guy reviewing the play when a freekick is called and the ref is only 90% sure it was the right call to make, he can talk to the camera guy and have it reviewed, taking it even further he can watch it on a pad carried by the linesmen and then make the correct call, like refs do in hockey when uncertain of a goal. Back to the subject, fighting helps not just againts the guys who are there to mess with your "point makers" but also to regulate the moral and set the tone of the game, refs have a huge impact on it but there is a limit to what they can do, If someone gets under your skin and you slash him next shift, you have to deal with the consequences of slashing someone, refs will give you a minor for it, but a guy in the other team will punch you for doing such a stupid thing, next time he gets under your skin you will think twice about slashing him, not due to the 2min penalty but the fight that will occur after it.. there is only such much a ref can do to the game..
@david.tousignant20

Lordputrik93 I've played tough sports in my life : football and I get my hand in hockey too (for a short period of time) & rugby. Fighting, on the contrary, led to more cheap shots. Look at how many cheap shots were given when The Broad Streer Bullies or the Big Bar Bruins played the Montréal Canadiens. Fighting and goons were there and yet it didn't police the game at all. What about the Québec Nordiques versus the Montréal Canadiens Vendredi Saint's game... Nowadays, many ex-NHL even questionned themselves about it place in hockey : Ken Dryden, Mike Bossy, Serge Savard.

I think it's pretty clear that the NHL is slowly trying to push an anti-fighting agenda on the sport and it's pretty ridiculous. Of course fighting should always be closely watched and enforce penalties on it , but let it happen. Like I hate seeing the refs break up a fight when it just barely got started.

I find fighting in hockey to be a fascinating dichotomy - on the one hand, it's clearly illegal and players are penalized for it according to the official rules. On the other hand, it's an accepted tactic because of the many ways it can affect the state of play. I think it's actually a really interesting study on masculinity in general: even though there is not necessarily any real advantage statistically to fighting, it's still understood among players that fighting is a necessary component of the game in order to keep players on their toes and keep the 'status quo' of play in general. It makes one wonder if fighting is perhaps a necessary component of the male psyche: that perhaps maybe conflict is not exactly as detrimental as we've taught it is, at least in the realm of competing males.

They need to make a rule that states if you fight someone after they LEGALLY check someone, you are immediately ejected from the game. I wanna see fighting, and I wanna see hits, but if your boy had his head down and gets rung, help him back to the bench and teach him to keep his head up, don't start fighting the checker; THAT is why fighting will be banned... because idiots use it when it's not necessary.

I see where your coming from but, A teams tough guy is there to patrol the ice or watch from the bench and protect his teammates and star players. He is on the team to keep the star players healthy. How healthy would they be if they got legally checked 30 times in a game night after night? If Sidney Crosby who I can't stand had 2 enforcers on his team he wouldn't get hit and concussed nearly as much. Star players are huge investments. Think of star players like fancy cars and big mansions. Enforcers are the alarms that protect them.

I'm 47, so I got to grow up watching the Broad Street Bullies. It was an amazing time to be a Flyers fan. I wish I had known how amazing it was, but I was too young. I just liked how a grown up was taking the time to teach me this weird game. Its one of my first memories...watching Flyers games in my uncles basement while all the adults drank beer, smoked and cheered at the TV. Anyway, I've seen the game change, and rather dramatically. Nobody used to wear any helmet, except the goalie, and even then he just had the type of goalie mask in the Jason horror movies. Fights were guaranteed. The losing team seemed to almost always instigate something when the game was out of reach late in the 3rd period. It created rivalries unlike that in any other sport. It also kept players honest. If you went after a teams star player, you can bet your ass you were going to have to face one of their goons later in the game. It was even more amazing in person. My uncle had season tickets since the Flyers inaugural season, so he had pretty good seats at the Spectrum. He'd take me once or twice each season. Back then, winning held additional challenges. If a team couldnt beat you with skill, they beat you with braun. As a matter of fact, thats how the Broad Street Bullies were born. After the Canadiens had kicked their asses left and right and humiliated the Flyers, he said that would never happen to us again, and built a team of thugs to protect their stars. Rivalries arent the same with how dramatically the fighting has dropped. Watching the game isnt nearly as satisfying as it used to be....the game was perfect in the 70s and 80s....IDK why they had to ruin a good thing.

Growing up watching hockey all my childhood and in adulthood but there is a certain response to each fight, once your rival team as well as it being awesome feeling.

Less fighting is due to the rise of analytics. The math shows that the age old tradition of having a low skill enforcer whose role is solely to fight is actually less valuable to your team than just having an actual skilled hockey player in his place.

Hockey to me feels like the last and only sport left untouched by todays movements and softies. Left pure, raw, and beautiful. I’m sure some of the old cats feel differently but I’m a new fan supporting my hometown team. This is the only sport I watched a game from start to finish and wasn’t bored for a second. This sport is wild and the energy in the arenas are intense. I’m not gonna lie growing up in the southern U.S. I thought it was boring for a long time. I’m 23 now and I regret not being brought to a game a lot sooner. This is the greatest sport ever. I wanna know what it feels like to slide a puck across the ice.

It is touched by the softies like anything, just luckily not really that much at the NHL level. Here in Europe in most leagues you get 5+20 for fighting. In the OHL they wanted to ban not only fighting, but HITTING which is insane. There are also a lot of fans complaining about fights after clean hits, which I don’t agree with since fighting can be used as a tactic so that the other team doesn’t hurt your stars, but I don’t think the comments by fans have affected the game

Fighting has a purpose in hockey. It keeps players in line. Like the video said, hockey is a high contact sport with tons of emotion. Now that fighting is on the decline, more crap moves like Nyquist spearing Spurgeon is happening. Hell, if Boogard was still on the roster, bless his soul, Nyquist would have never, ever, even thought of doing what he did. Fighting curbs the crap dirty plays that are on the increase. I'm not saying we have bench clearing brawls ever again, I'm just saying that goons can still be a good asset to the game.

I remember on a field trip when I was in 3rd grade, the Solar Bears and another team (that I forgot) got into a big fight right infront of where our school sat.

Hockey is also a sport where you go stupid fast on ice with no way to stop abruptly meaning people are going to get bodied. And everyones a little for likely to fight after being bodied to the ground
