Ok, just to be clear on what transpired here. This took place on a Sunday. I left the shop around 3 in the afternoon to see to a family comittment and after, our usual Sunday night live show. I left the shop open for GARRETT and AUSTIN to do the work on Garrett's car. The HELPER was there to ASSIST THEM and then close up when they were finished. Once I left, THE HELPER APPOINTED HIMSELF MECHANIC and took over, He was NEVER GIVEN ANY AUTHORITY TO DO SO, and when I found out what had transpired the following morning, I had a VERY intense conversation with him. Understand that I knew all about his "limitations" and because of his particular life situation, I decided to try and work with him and hopefully guide him towards his goal of becoming a mechanic. I would not have, and could not have done anything differently.

Just an update for the comment section since I know Garrett personally, Garrett is going around town as I type this picking up the proper parts to get the Charger fixed. We’re gonna make a copper fuel line for it as soon as we figure out the routing after relocating the fuel inlet as well as seal up the oil leak and re-gasket the spacer. Hopefully by this afternoon Garrett will be much happier and we’ll be cruising to the track soon!

As I go through life's problems I realize how lucky I am to have had a father who was mechanical and taught me the right way to do things and to recognize when something is over my head. He learned all that from his father who was a machinist. As I help friends and take on odd jobs here and there I've come to find out that, unlike most viewers of a channel like this, most of the population doesn't have a clue how to perform service or make repairs. It's not limited to automotive issues. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, you name it. Most people think that if it won't work it's because you didn't hit it with a big enough hammer.

Brief description, I've been a professional (ase certified) mechanic for over 40 years. If I had a nickel for every repair I've made to someone else's repair I would have a shit ton of nickels. Nothing worse then someone that "think's" they know what there doing as apposed to someone that knows there limitations but wants to learn. You did the right thing in this situation. Good luck with getting it right and taking it to the track.

I’ve worked in a run of the mill auto repair shop since I was 15 (almost 21 now) and the one thing that’s always struck me is the unhampered ability to just not care. I think it just comes down to the way you learned, the boss man is a engine builder and old nitro head like uncle tony, when something comes in the bay you have to remember that not only is that someone’s pride and joy and not only a needed tool for them and they’re life but most importantly it’s a extension of your reputation, I can stop in almost any parking lot in my town and recognize a car I’ve made right. I carry business cards in my wallet with pride cause I know we do the best work in the county. I’ve seen dozens of “techs” come and go cause they get lazy and just try and push out work, many 2-3X as old as me yet they just don’t care and can’t be made to.

A few years back I tried to teach an enthusiastic fellow how carbs worked and how to clean and rebuild them. He got mad when I expected HIM to do it and I wasn't going to do it. I was at a local car customizer and mr customizer had to " send out " a simple carb to rebuilt. My dear husband could hardly contain his laughter at the thought. Now for special applications there is no crime in ordering a carb from Barry Grant or other specialist for your specific need. Remember it takes at least ten thousand hours of practice to learn a subject. So be patient and learn / earn success in the field of your choosing. Stay Safe.

Our new "engine builder" built a Volvo D12. All I had to do was put in in the truck it was supposed to go in. So far, it hasn't been cranked and I've found multiple problems. Hi Tony, my Grandfather was a wrench for 50 years and he had a favourite expression for guys fixing their mechanical problems who didn't know anything about doing it right. He called them " shoemakers". Told me he didn't know anything about making shoes, but they didn't know anything about fixing cars. Often said it cost those customers more for him to fix there screwups rather than bring it to him in the first place. First heard that expression 50 years ago and is still remembered .
