Not gonna lie Rob, your videos are the upper echelon of any RU-vid NHL content creators. There’s stats that I wouldn’t have even known if it weren’t for you. I could easily get lost in a 45 minute video and be locked in for every bit of it. Thank you for everything you do!
Thanks man. This is no disrespect to other hockey RU-vidrs. But a lot of my graphics + excel spreadsheets, take longer to make than some RU-vidr's entire videos haha
Isn't that the problem with the Leafs? It's very hard to have an ace in your bottom 6 if you're paying 4 players $40+ million. Hope management fixes this issue in the off-season.
Pasta is a such a frustrating player in the playoffs. He we be invisible for a game or 2 and then randomly show up huge in a game like last year game 7 against FLA were he nearly won the game if not for the last min goal
Bobrovsky is one of those players who'll die to make sure his team moves on. As a leafs fan, it a rare sight to see a player with that much dedication. Some players have it , some dont. We've had plaenty who bring that much intenstity to the game, but you need more thatn 1 player to win a cup. Bobrovsky can bring a whole fanbase to their feet with one play. Very few plater in the league who can pul that off. I love the Leafs, and theyv'e sure had players capabel of accomplishing the same, they've just never managed to pull it off.
palat, lehkonen and barbashev are all top 6 forwards and in 2022 the oilers had kane, step up who is an equivalent piece to the oilers as the aforementioned players were to their team.
True, Kane did step up in 2022, and guess what, they made the conference finals. I am more-so talking about a player who elevates their game from a depth scoring role. Lehkonen and Barbashev were brought in as depth scorers
Love your videos, but I’d love to see McDavid’s and Draisaitl’s stats per team as I’m willing to bet 90% of their rise in point production against The Kings and not top tier teams.
Dude Bob is just like binnington in regards to being passed over for their ability to be clutch. I'm rooting for Tarasenko and the Panthers.. also rooting for the New York Rangers.. Glad the lost Vegas injury reserves got eliminated 🙃 and they got to see petro being foolish. Him and peron would take the stupidest penalties at the absolute worst time....
Most teams in the regular season are trying to get as many points as possible in those 82 games thats why they tend to use the 1-3-1 system during regular season games, during the playoffs they use 1-2-2 as it's a more conservative forecheck especially, that's why boston is losing they are trying to continue the 1-3-1 system against a team that is using the 1-2-2 system
4 месяца назад
@@mjberta7319 sure but why not just be the best at 1-2-2 from the start?
Not reliable enough during the regular season, as it creates less aggressive offensive zone play especially for teams with smaller forwards like the majority of the league, the oilers after woodcroft started to use a combination system that implemented pros from both systems due to their smaller forwards geared towards using their speed and handling but also not limiting the ability to backcheck if needed that's why they went on that massive win streak, teams couldn't keep up to the style until vegas which they used a oilers tailored system to combat against the speed the oilers had previous teams tried a similar thing but didn't implement it properly
@@lebryanthoward9416 @CowboyUp1371 I think you're both quibbling over definitions. There's "all star" in a colloquial sense of "top-tier" and then there's "All-Star" which is the literal "member of an all-star team". I think OP meant it in the former context.
@@lowtierduster-7254 You don't think Leafs fans have considered that? We didn't choose the Leafs, they chose us..Like juvenile diabetes. After this year's loss, I searched "why are we fans of sports teams", just hoping for a way out. There isn't one, for the record.
I swear to christ, in the playoffs you only go as far as your third line will take you. You gotta invest in your 3rd line stars, thats where Toronto fumbled, the core 4 left no space for game breaking 3rd line winger. Gotta lock down those 3 mil x 5 year deals
Again, my argument for whenever someone claims that Gretzky and Lemieux’s stats are inflated: they invented the modern game, and also, why weren’t their contemporaries putting up those numbers either?
In 1980s NHL 8 goals per game NHL! Today only 6 goals per game NHL! If Auston Matthews had played In 1982 he would had scored over 100 goals easily beating Gretzky's 92 goal record! Ovechkin ERA only 5,3-6 goals per game NHL! If Ovechkin had played high scoring 1980s he would had scored over 1300 goals easily! Canada have 650000 hockey players today! USA have 500000 hockey players today! Ovechkin's Russia have only under 100000 hockey players today! Canada and USA should have 11 players who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today! Joe Malone scored 44 goals in 20 games why Gretzky and Lemieux scored 44 goals in 20 games!
Brett Hull 86 goals! Gretzky 92 goals! Is Brett Hull the Second Best athlete of all time? Soccer have 250 million players vs Canada 650000 players that means The Soccer All Stars would beat Orr Gretzky Lemieux easily 100 game Series 93-7!
Nothing wrong with facts. Refs were brutal in Game 2 so many missed calls. I wanna see em play too but there were some serious non-calls in that game, both ways, but the three non-calls against Hughes were an absolute joke. Any 3 of those plays could have ended his season. Refs need to do better, period.
Normal hockey fan : The Leafs suck in the playoffs! Rob : I will go in dept and explain to you in a logical-mathematic way, why the Leafs suck in the playoff. As always, very interesting video! 👏
Honestly I feel the 2nd/3rd/4th liners stepping up is what makes the difference in the playoffs. If you can score deep... you got a shot! Edit: No joke... I made this comment BEFORE you said pretty much the same thing lol.
What isn't accounted for here is clutch factor and ability to perform under pressure. It would be interesting to take a look at what Marner's point distribution looks like throughout a series. He tends to get all his points early in a series, in games that are already decided and disappears later in the series when the pressure is on. Compare this to Pasta who always seems to score a clutch goal.
Good point. Marner's only goal in the latest Boston series came in the third period when they were down 3-0 and it didn't matter at all. This guy has ZERO impact on his team, and can't play defense either (he let Pasta blow right by him when he was fresh off the bench for that OT winner). They need to trade this guy ASAP. A traffic cone would get as many points in the playoffs.
I’m curious to see the numbers for Panarin. Kinda wish he was on the list, I’ll look up the numbers myself and post the findings if anyone else is interested
Why does every batter Marner for disappearing in the playoffs while completely ignoring that Matthews is an even bigger ghost in the playoffs? (edit - Matthews' regression is larger than Marner's over his career by far... the past 3 years skews the data).
Both players are entering their prime, which is why I specifically covered the previous 3 years. Most players on this list are in their prime or are entering it. The way I look at it, is that if the prior years were lessons for this team, this when they should be dominating
Blasphemous commentary on Gretzky and Lemieux. Obviously they dropped off more than guys who can’t make it past the second round who are in their primes. They played literally 3x as long, and had deep playoff runs every year. Way easier to put up points when u play 9 games vs 21 including the cup final. Joke.
Why I’m so relieved ovie won the stanley cup and the conn smythe with only Holtby up for debatt. Kuzy was good, but not every gane like ovie, so him about to pass Gretzky means so much. Ovechkin was at his best and won in the playoffs unlike so many others. Thornton, Iginla, Dionne, Marleau, and sooooo many others who did nothing in the playoffs. Ovechkin proved he could do it at the highest level, so his hunt for 895 is a treat.
Numbers are great but a lot of the time it's that star player scoring that game winner at the right time too. I'm sure GWG would give some good insight too.
hyman, hyman, hyman. He’s coming alive in these playoffs and which I think he’s becoming a great playoff goer. I don’t think anybody would classify him as a bottom 6 player on the oilers though. You could use the example for Bouchard.? maybe?
Oilers have good depth scoring. We can put kane down on the 3rd, foegle who had and outstanding 7ear. Janmark was mid but his physical presence puts us up. If Carrick comes back same thing. Henr8que has put himself on a second line to 1st line from the deadline. Brett kulak and desharnais have been solid defensively making good plays weather if it's blocking 2 or 3 shots on a shift, sprawling out their masses bodies to stop passes. Ceci broke his goaless record. We have depth and they work in the past season aswell. When mcdavid was out against the golden knights, we won that game 5-1. Do not doubt these oilers in the slightest bud
Great content. But shouldn’t the amount of games played affect the number on the stats you provided? Technically Marner should be the worst because of the first round exit and will not play any more games this season. Therefore the average changes considerably. Versus McKinnon or Pastrnak would play more games.
Dallas has almost immaculate depth in their lineup. they arent the flashiest players ever, but they can score up and down the line. Faksa, Smith, Steel, Dadonov, Dellandrea who have all contributed during the regular season and postseason for that Bottom 6 scoring. some of our top guys aren't scoring a lot right now in the playoffs, but our bottom 6 has been picking up that slack yo help compensate. plus our defenders aren't afraid to get in on the scoring. Ryan Suter has a goal in the Avs series, Heiskanen was on hat trick watch in Game 2. Dallas has so much depth up and down their lines that when some guys aren't doing it, the others are right there to pull their weight
Bruins fan here. Pasta has been invisible compared to the regular season. Dude cannot finish. Do a video on defenseman and talk about how Charlie mcavoy has been on the ice for every goal against the bruins since game 3 of the Toronto series. Goaltending is the only reason we are here now, hoping for a repeat of 2011 where goaltending got us a cup 🙏
Greeat Video Rob, I would like to see these stats overlayed with increases in TOI. We know how Edmonton rides those horses and it would be neat to see how much of that increase could be attributed to deployment. That said most guys whose point totals go down also have their ice time bumped up just not as drastically.
ive been watching your vids for a while and have never subscribed. this video you broke down strategy with the different formations and brought up objective analysis for point differences for different players and hit differences for teams in the regular season and playoffs. i have now subscribed. its refreshing because a lot of hockey analysis is really bare bones and i appreciate people that really break down things. To many commentators and youtubers are like oh wow did you see that nice shot or that was a big hit and thats it.
Would be neat to do a video on guys who famously seem to get better in the playoffs. Carter Verhaeghe's point total ticks a bit upwards in the playoffs but he's especially known for scoring really high impact goals in the games he scores too.
The Jets aside from Helly crapping the bed got away from the play that nailed them 4th overall during the regular season. They were nothing in the playoffs compared to the system they used during the season.
Pastrnak has been horrible in this playoff year, only highlights I see of him are him getting lit up, he’s been getting smoked all over the ice while contributing very little to the score sheet
Its a good thing I'm not only a leafs, but also an oilers fan. 😂 i just want canada to win a mf cup in my lifetime man. I dont think thats asking for much, is it? 😢
3:49 Um, that goal looked shockingly similar to a certain goal score by a certain Bruin player in a certain game. What's more shocking is it was the team he scored that goal against, that scored it here.
I think its a little disingenuous to compare Prime McDavid to Gretzky's total career numbers. In his first 9 years (to compare to McDavids career so far), Gretzky was 2.1pts/pg in the playoffs. While that may be a regression of .2pts/pg of his regular season pace in that same time frame, its still insane numbers in the playoffs.
Fair, but if you compare eras, McDavid would be closer to 2.3 in terms of goal scoring averages back then to today. With that being said, it's an impossible comparison.
Dude, no matter how you try to spin it, playoff hockey may be "different" but the best teams in the regular season invariably have more success? Do you think the Bruins beating the Leafs was an "upset"? Crushing Marner at the expense of McDavid and Draisaitl is pretty weak when Pastrnak and Kucherov do worse than he does. Marner isn't the problem, the team isn't that good. No PP no number 1 D.
let's not start a weiner ducking contest just yet. edmontons played LA 3 years straight. bos tor tb have played each other and florida. competition matters
My timeline as actually off by a couple months. Panarin techinally was, and Marner signed right after. But yeah, my man was paid like an elite 2 way center
