He's definitely high up there... I can think of a few other contenders though. One of them got shot multiple times, including once in the head and he called an ambulance, but they didn't believe him when he reported that he was shot in the head... Another one is my grandfather, he survived a bomb blast in WWII, which riddled him with shrapnel. He too had a piece lodged in his brain! This makes me wonder how many people survive such brain injuries... Also, both people were not out of action despite their injuries!
@@edi9892 i saw a guy who was thought to be guilty in a police interrogation his girlfriend was shot dead and he had a black eye and wasnt making much sense. he kept trying to insist he think he got shot in the face. and they kept looking at it and thinking it was just a black eye. EMS came eventually into the interrogation room and got him out of there asap. i think he died weeks later im not sure. but his eye was black because he infact got shot with a 38 through the eye
First and foremost Dr Chris, I STILL don't know which I love more, you or your videos! I was rooting for the bear! Even though this dude was severely handicapped with stupidity, he should have remembered the 2 most important rules. #1- you must respect nature, it's their home and were here first. #2- and most importantly...2 legs or 4, you never ever come between a mama and her cub! Nothing good can come from it!! I have no sympathy for men who do not give respect where it's due or false machismo!! Thanks for another great video Dr Chris!
Yeah, usually when you hear about people surviving a freak accident, it's like one or two insane injuries (like Phineas Gage), but this dude got utterly mauled, like so many fuckin injuries and attacks, survived against the grizzly for so goddamn long. I dunno man, it's wild.
"This picture exists... It is not for the faint of heart." My morbid curiosity got the better of me and I looked it up. All I can say is that the doctors did an amazing job at stitching him together after that!
I must say that, this man is stronger than most. His quick thinking, and his ability to walk 12 km. Is a true testament, to all of us, that it can be done. Great job.
Another reminder among many that to thrive in the face of adversity it’s almost never enough to just be strong to survive, you need to be strong and clever enough to think on your feet while literally possibly dying lmao, what a boss honestly.
Also answers the question of how did humans survive before the invention of weapons or large settlements. The human body is tough, much tougher than most people think it is. And even a twig can become a weapon in the hands of a human. Humans didn't just "survive", they thrived. They were hunting mammoths with sharpened tree branches and stones, fighting off absolute monsters for their prey, and they were good at it.
I'm surprised that you have to explain it however I live in Australia and it needs to be explained to tourists why you shouldn't F with Kangaroos... Basically every indigenous animal...
Spent a good bit of my childhood living in Glacier National Park. Stories about Park rangers stopping tourists from earning Darwin awards were a nearly daily occurrence. If you see a bear from the road, it is not recommended to stop, get out of your car and walk towards it to get a good picture. You think this would be common sense, but city people do not have any of that.
It takes about 3 hours for a healthy person to walk down those 12 km. He had one and a half leg, was missing some chunks of flesh and half his head was shreded. This guys will to live is strong.
????????????????? I run 6 miles in 30mins, clearly I'm walking faster than 6 miles in 3hrs... The average person runs 3 miles in roughly 25-30mins The average person isn't taking 3 hours to walk 6 miles
@@YaponnkWell, aside from 6 miles not being 12km, the guy above is right. It would take me well under 2h for a 12km hike and I'm just a 40 year old healthy guy that likes walking instead of taking a bus now and then. I know google maps will say 3h for that distance, but that's honestly baloney, I recommend giving it a try yourself if possible. Of course, not downplaying what the man from the video did, walking 50m in that state is too much, he's a friggin terminator.
South African here. There are a number of American tourists that get injured or killed, whilst going on safari, each year. One of the typical things that happens, is that tourists open car windows to get a better view, or to take pictures. Sometimes leaning out of the windows or even leaving the vehicle. For the benefit of American viewers I will point out that even if you have a car door open, standing 5 meters away, a lion will close a distance of almost 100 meters and kill you, before you have the chance to turn, run and get into the car. Also, don’t hoot or wave to elephants to get their attention. You may just succeed. That is when you will realise that your 4 wheel drive safari truck is of no consequence to a 8 metric ton African bull elephant. Obey the rules and regulations of the parks you visit, it’s there for a reason.
Good lord the resilience of this guy! And the mental capacity after that attack to wrap the shirt around his face like that and everything. What a legend.
I watch "Scary Bear Attacks" religiously on YT, this was an amazing survivor story. Should also be said that no matter how small or "non-critical" a bite wound is, animal or human, if it breaks skin, antibiotics ARE VERY NECESSARY. Bites contain a plethora of bacteria and it doesn't take long before it can become septic or gangrenous and amputations or death may occur. People have lost fingers (necessary amputations) from severe infections just from domestic cat bites.
I was accidentally bit by another kid on my scalp (roughhousing, kid was bucktoothed) back in the early 1970's and the ER doc told me and my parents that human bites were "dirtier" than many animal bites and put me on antibiotics after my stiches.
@@kennyleung2001 It is all about pressure versus area. A needle can pierce something with the force that would not even badly smoosh a tuna sub against that same arm. Yeah... I'm kinda hungry right now.
It’s unintentionally so. This video has nothing to do with the gender war but it gives a clear idea to disingenuous people that use monsters like Ted Bundy as a baseline regarding “gendered safety conversation”. All in all, Godspeed to this guy for surviving his injuries.
Jeremy is a very lucky guy to have survived that bear attack! But I hope that this is a valuable lesson to anyone who is thinking about going out into the wild for a hike! Always have your bear spray and your firearm on your person and not in your backpack! I am so glad that he is alive and well to be able to tell his story and be a warning to others! Px
I was stabbed by a giant anteater. Went straight (well slightly curved due to shape of claw) through my arm. I remember at the hospital watching the nurse flush the wound, shot water or saline or whatever they use in the bigger hole, and it came streaming out the other side of my arm, very surreal to watch.
@gohawks3571 At a zoo, I was a zookeeper. It was injured so needed to be moved to our vet clinic. Medicine with animals is a bit of a guessing game, different animals react to different medicines differently and it is based on weight which has to be guessed most of the time. As a precaution we tend to go on the lower end to not overdose. Due to all that, it woke up in the back of the van mid trip, and while trying to restrain it it got me.
Unbelievable how he managed to keep fighting & not lose consciousness amidst all that the bear dished out to him!!! Amazing he’s still with us and able to do so much!! What fighting spirit!
Keeping his rifle loaded would have drastically changed this scenario. For better or worse, idk, but he clearly was ambushed while trying to load his rifle while injured. If it was already loaded he could have fled or defended himself more readily
I survived a cougar attack in university. Iwas mauled and pawed, it was nothing like what Jeremy endured. Getting rid of the cigarette smell was the worst.
speechless! anyone else who was covering their eyes? God bless this man, and thanks @Dr.ChrisRaynor for being a worthy advocate, this is something that should be shown in school, I think that this is a public service, and that it teaches respect fir wildlife that could save a life
I've noticed from watching Scary Bear Attacks that many people in these areas have such a casual attitude about safety. Bear spray seems like an afterthought. "Loading rifle?".... wait, it was unloaded?... in bear country??
I cannot even count how many times I muttered "surely things cannot get any worse" under my breath while watching this. Jeremy is the pinnacle of determination and survival instinct! I do wonder what the people at the campsite he drove to thought about it when he arrived. I, at least, would have at first assumed that the zombie apocalypse had begun 😅
A grizzly is basically one massive muscle. Under that leathery skin is a full body suit of corded muscle. You can stab a grizzly in the stomach and the wind will barely bleed. The body can pull injuries closed its insane. Now ad in the fact that they don't kill before eating... 45-70 is a mandatory carry
Really? Huh I never actually knew they don’t kill before eating but that’s horrible to know lmfao Jesus. Gives me yet again more validation in saying polar bears are naughty, naughty boys that is if that same fact is true across the board which I’d assume so?
@@Commentator488 I hope you were being sarcastic, because humans can't detect sarcasm without nonverbal expressions. And bears won't laugh at our useless and nonessential sarcasms.
Amazing story. From what I get from the story, he tried using his bike as a shield (2:25). Good move. I've used it with large dogs. The fact the bear kept coming after getting momentarily hung up on the bike surprises me.
@@Pariatech The unfamiliar and unexpected often is something to a bear and other large predators. Getting stuck on a bike is unfamiliar and unexpected. This bear was undeterred, probably older and more experienced, but I've heard stores of others backing off enough that people escaped harm.
This is why it's important not to travel alone in Grizzly land and always come strapped with high-powered arms (eg, 10mm minimum, Shotgun, high caliber rifle). Though i have heard stories of Spiked anti bear armor from ancient times. That could help.
Adrenaline. It's an amazing hormone. Even wearing off, he was definitely able to get to help just from that alone. The human body is an amazing thing. I'm glad he made it out alive.
@@3v068 idk about that bro, while I agree with everything else adrenaline running out in a life or death situation when you’re heavily wounded is a 50/50 at best whether you just violently hit the deck and pass out or can keep going, and it doesn’t matter if you’re the most hardened combat vet out it can happen to the best of the best given the situation.
@@darkforcesjedi I did not, but the description of the event by the guy and subsequent explanations by dr Chris are enough to say that it was an incredible feat of human steadfastness.
Oh hell yeah. This kinda stuff is fascinating and it's just so incredible to see the body designs and limits of biology that exist in nature. Even things as simple as watching a cat move stealthily (Or a 600lb Tiger for that matter). The biomechanics behind these things are incredibly impressive when you examine them closely. Thanks Doctor for scratching another itch I didn't know I had hahah
Having camped halfway across America twice. Often in bear country. Bear attacks were my largest concern. Thanks be I only had one small bear come through my camp, which I easily ran off. If I had seen this video before my trips, I probably would have stayed home. Jeremy a real super hero, I say this. Ahaaaaaa!.
When I was 14 in Boy Scouts we went to NM to Philmont, hiked for a week, I got conjunctivitis from my Contant , had to go to base camp, the kid in the bed next to me had been attacked by a bear! I got home later on my Grandmother had cut an article out of the enquirer magazine with story and picture of him in that same bed lol. We had one near eat out breakfast as well
People forget about Glass. That and Phineas Gage are the two survivors who defy logic in terms of survival beyond expectation. Both also survived despite the best efforts of medical science of that time, which in itself is astounding.
I've heard this story when it first happened and I've always wondered why his firearm wasn't loaded from the beginning of the hunt and why it took him so long to finally load the firearm he had time to take pictures but not secure his safety. I would never enter bear county without a loaded chamber in my rifle and pistol and bear spray on my chest or hip and after the first attack the only moving I would be doing is loading up my firearm. When you go into bear county you need at least three different types of bear defense spray pistol and the weapon you are hunting with.
😬😳 saw the photo! He's working with half a face after a fight with a bear and I've reacted more dramatic when my purse gets knocked over in the car. This guy has an incredible disposition and attitude. Definitely will be listening to his story in depth.👏🏾
I heard a bear expert give strategies for bear attacks. If it's brown, lie down (apparently they'll quickly leave you alone if you're playing dead). If it's black, fight back (black bears don't like a real fight). If it's white, night night (don't get caught by a polar bear). That dude is so tough. I would have sat there and cried. ❤
Jepp, thats true. If an animal attacks you for feeding on you, it will not stop. If mommy bear is defending its younglings, she will stop when she thinks your nomore a thread. Thats what I think. But at least it does not make a big difference. An adult bear is acting with you like I can do with a little toy. Bearattack fatality / letality arround 99%.
@@in-kognito8997actually isn't the typical advice that you have better odds of surviving a predation scenario than a protection one? Most predators will give up if their prey puts up more of a fight than they expected, hence why looking big, making noise and not running is advised. Against a mother bear none of that applies and it just attacks on sight and keeps attacking even/especially if you fight back
@@MisterCynic18 looking big and making noise is black bears. For grizzlies it's the opposite, they are more than happy to wreck you if it looks like you're challenging them.
@@MisterCynic18 yeah I always viewed it just like how we would be, most humans if you attacked/was perceived as a threat to their child would attack you relentlessly. It’s never 100% there’s always going to some kind of example of every species doing the opposite somewhere somehow but the odds 9/10 times swing towards fierce protection of young.
Yep, but if your options are "climb a tree" or "Run straight in the the woods / fields" ... our instinct is to seek a tree, since neither open field or woods are going to hinder a bear... neither will a human in a tree, but our instincts tell us otherwise.
This Man is as tough as all men think we are..💪🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿😤. Happy he lived.. give him a metal.. The Man Metal.. also. Anyone who'd rather live with a bear then a man.. plz..be our guest 😂😂
Judging by his accent, he's from the midwest or rural Canada. They grow some tough people out there. Respect to him for a formidable survival instinct.
I thought this was a response to that video where the ladies ask would you rather be alone in the woods with a man or a bear. Some women said they rather be with a bear 😂
I've often thought the human body is frail and fragile. This video changed my opinion. "From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you."
Brother... You tread close to the boundaries of tech heresy... *Loads Bolter* May the Omnissiah forgive you, for I will not. *Unleashes the puragatorial flames of the God Emperor's holy wrath via imperial incinerator gun* Suffer not the heretic to live.
A fellow who will never have to prove his "manliness", A man who should never have to buy his own drinks again. One thing that occurs to me though. The reason why there is a scarcity of apex predators around populated areas. It's easy to be critical of our forefathers for killing off Nature's Bosses, but if I had witnessed an attack like that back in The Day, game over, man! California, at the time of the first Spanish explorers in the early 1600's had an estimated 10,000 grizzlies. The last grizzly in California was in1924. I totally believe in animal conservation, but I don't want to worry about being mauled or attacked by our four legged friends while going for a run. The two legged predators are enough to watch out for!
... Prayers he is able to have an actual decent standard of living. Thanks for the post, appreciated absolutely. (And appropriately...,.) Love forever whatsoever.
Ummm.. yeah, so I searched for the post-attack selfie. If you're curious what "face torn off" looks like, go for it. Otherwise, I second Raynor's advice about looking for it.
i already knew just how terrifying bears can be, but there's definitely a huge, HUGE gap between the silly videos you see of bears online and actual interactions you risk having with bears.
Should do a video on people getting attacked by animals that are not normally thought of as dangerous (at least the general population) - like those people for some reason, don’t believe that a bison can trample you to death or a moose or elk or whatever. Just saw a video the other day some guy trying to intimidate a very large alligator, it did not go well.
Basically a momma or parent any wild animal is doubly dangerous. Cows (bison, moose, musk ox) and sows (bear and swine [hogs]) can be really bad being big and equipped 14:05 with hooves and claws. Bears add teeth.
Its not just apex predators you need to watch out for. A recent meateater podcast had on 3 ladies who were attack by an otter or two. One had to be airlifted to the hospital.
So after he survived the 1st attack and got away, instead of getting into his car and driving away immediately to avoid further injury, he stopped and wasted time taking a photos of himself to see what he looked like allowing the bear to return and attack him again?! Yeah he definitely earned the darwin award for sure! It's a miracle he's even alive!
Not sure if you mentioned it or not but this bear wasn't all that big either probably only 300 to 400 pounds not like the size of those male grizzly you see in those clips
I have not seen this response to would you rather be in the woods with a bear or a man trend. Grizzly bears are absolute units. It's scary that North America actually had an even bigger bear while humans lived here. I can't imagine something 50% bigger then a grizzly coming at me.
The worst thing about bear attacks is they often don't even bother to kill their victims before eating them. Grizzlies outcompeted the shortfaced bear, humans without adequate weapons have no chance.
Organized apex predator boughts in the early days of the Americas proved bears just kind of win. Lion vs. Bear? Bear wins. Tiger vs. Bear? Bear wins. (AFAIK it's mostly a bone density thing.)
A pride of lions will absolutely destroy an bear and Tigers mainly the largest siberians do prey on bears. Wolves prey bears and in Africa it is theorized that Lions killed off the last of the bears in the savannah that is why there are no bear populations there. Those early fights were against starved tigers and lions that were shipped across the world and in bad condition, you forgot to mention that.
Nope. Tigers usually dominate brown bears in fights. Amur tigers regularly hunt and kill bears, primarily in summer and autumn, and fully grown adult brown bears are killed and eaten by tigers too. Those alleged arranged bouts in early America are nothing but a old myth and made-up stories with NO EVIDENCE to confirm those stories. As recent as November 2022, a large male brown bear was hunted and killed in a fight by a smaller tiger, and eaten. This happened in the Khabarovsk region of Far East Russia. Tigers are definitely superior to bears.
@@sonysoyboysaremadeoftears.7404 I ignored it because it's irrelevant. Bone density was always the determining factor. When you start rolling around with something, the one that's bigger and heavier is at a massive advantage unless you can manage some precision strike like a leopard's skull/neck bite. Bears are built so powerfully that a starving bear and a starving (your animals) will have exactly the same outcome as a well fed duel. The bear's skeleton is so sturdy compared to all of those that it's like pitting a wrestler against a skilled martial artist. Most of the predators we've mentioned in this whole comment thread are pack, persistence, or ambush predators. Bears are head-on killers. Every example you've mentioned either stalks or tires its prey out before engaging directly, but bears just jump straight in and start killing because they're so tough that they don't have to be cautious. In any fully well-fed 1v1 on the planet against any carnivore known to man and most of the herbivores, the bear definitely has a distinct and significant edge. It's an opportunistic carnivore with the bulk and strength of an herbivore. Bears only stopped being a huge threat to HUMANS after high-powered repeating rifles became commonplace. They're just completely different calibers of animals.
