I toured Foursquare distillery in Barbados where they make Real McCoy. All the rums I tasted there were fantastic. I had to buy some that you can’t find in the states.
Thanks for sipping & for the kind words! Yep! ours is a true Barbados rum with no added sweeteners or flavors and authentically 100% aged on the island a full 12 years -- with 6-8% annual evaporative loss or "angel's share"! - But we think it's worth it! ;). Cheers!
Hey Greg! Thanks for the feature in this video and glad to see our package made it to you! We're excited to see that you could pick out the details of our products and put them to the test one by one! The Paloma was a great choice for the Grapefruit Cordial and is a favorite here in our office as well! The Old Fashioned Soda is also a great spin! Let us know what other cocktails you'll be making with these, we're interested to know! Cheers!
I do this too! I only check the mail once or twice a month and it stacks up in there. So I like to give them a little gift as a thank you for putting up with me.
This was fun, but specifically because it turned out to all be good stuff. Call me weird, but I like seeing you enjoy things, so seeing these products work for you makes me want to see more.
Yeah; I don't mind seeing Greg suffer for us sometimes.. But I also really like when he genuinely and thoroughly enjoys something. There's a certain energy that comes from him, and it's infectious. (in a good way)
I honestly think that BECAUSE they are so hyper-specific, it would be really fun to have an episode dedicated to getting several vastly different cocktails out of these syrups. It might not be useful for regular bartending, but for the individual? I think it would be cool!
I was going to make exactly the same suggestion. I love to see Greg’s methodology and thought process when workshopping a cocktail, as well as seeing the the drink itself
If you look on sites like Difford's guide half the drinks call for hyper specific syrups. Hell I saw one drink call for cucumber sugar syrup. This is just the direction modorn mixology has been headed in.
Hey Greg, just wanted to thank you for all the quality content. I found your channel right after turning 21 a few years ago. I worked as a cook in a higher-end restaurant at the time and between you and the bartenders I worked with I learned to appreciate alcohol for more than it's get-you-drunk potential. I just turned 25 and am still impressing my friends with quality old-fashions and rum-flavored crème brulees. I've learned a lot from you and have even bought several of your reading suggestions, such as "Liquid Intelligence". You've helped me learn how to truly appreciate alcohol and have even helped me develop my palate. I have a recipe with my name on it at a restaurant I used to work at, I built that recipe using knowledge you helped me gain. So THANK YOU, I cannot truly express my gratitude beyond that. I hope you, your family and everyone else in your life is doing well.
Fun fact the real "Real McCoy" was Elijah McCoy. He was a black, Canadian, engineer most famous for inventing a self-lubricating mechanism for steam engines.
True! And also "Kid McCoy," the savvy boxer, and Prohibition's gentleman rumrunner, Cpt. Bill McCoy, who was known for never adulterating his rum. Speakeasy patrons up & down the East Coast knew to ask for "The Real McCoy" to avoid the "booze" and "hooch" which might have anything from water & prune juice to turpentine added. 😬 Always go for the real deal. ;)
Always exciting to see new Greg Approved Booze™! Some of those fruit syrups at the beginning are definitely tempting. Like you said about the Christmas syrups, I appreciate when mixers can be used for more than one hyper-specific drink.
Just like a podcast with a Mailbag Episode every so often, this is fun! As you said, the specificity and random combination of what comes really puts ideas in your brain you won't have otherwise.
I didnt really notice this until now, but I like your custom soda bottles lining the back wall, even though they are from game franchises it feels more custom than just having already made bottles with their lables on the wall.
@@howtodrink I just noticed them, and I saw the Nazi Zombies sodas. I nerded out so hard. NGL, miss the deer head.. but the new set still looks great, Greg!
I am definitely a fan of a mezcal paloma. Jarritos grapefruit or in a pinch Squirt is my preferred mixer - white grapefruit is more bitter than pink/red, and I feel like that bitterness works better with the mezcal's smoke.
I also love the taste of mezcal and grapefruit- had a cocktail at restaurant-bar that had mezcal, grapefruit soda, and one of their in-house brewed sakes in it. Definitely better than the squirt palomas I was downing at a college get-together once. I haven't been able to get my hands on some good grapefruit soda yet, but I have a bottle of mezcal just waiting to be made into many mezcal palomas
As far as mojito 'mix' goes, ive found grinding up dried mint and sugar into a powder can do some good things! Just pour a scoop into the glass over ice, top with rum and the soda. Granted, it turns the drink completely green and murky but it tastes fantastic.
The cocktail & Son portion really made me happy. I bought the advent syrups on a whim last year and ony used the wassail, tonic, and blueberry by this point, but seeing this made me dig out the box to try the woderwall , and definitely agree it was a great drink, but the syrups are largely too specific to be used unless you willing to be creative, with such a small quantity of syrup.
Does anyone else want a book of all the funny and weird tasting notes that they put up on the screen? Like maybe a coffee table style book? I think it would be really fun, especially maybe reading the notes without the context of what Greg is saying about it.
Maybe every right hand page is the notes over Greg's face, like a title page, then every left is a quick bit of what Greg actually said and the recipe associated with the thing on that _sheet_ - so you don't see the context and the notes at the same time.
This is a fantastic episode. I love a good unboxing/fanmail episode, personally :D I would love to send you some of the gin and whiskey the distillery I work at makes, and I'm sure many other commenters feel similarly about some locally-made thing or their own workplace's spirits. Maybe invest in a PO box! Cheers Greg, always a joy to watch.
This was a good episode because you were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the drinks you had, describing them beautifully. It could be the first of a three-part episode with you making cocktails from all the syrups and mixers. I think it would be interesting, informative, and enjoyable, and I hope you'd enjoy most of the drinks.
I buy a bunch of liber and Co tonic syrup for my gin and tonic so I don't have to get the shit from the store. Might be a good episode to make a bunch of non alcoholic drinks with the syrups. I just make them into sodas because I hate water.
Really happy to hear you liked the Liber and Co orgeat. That's what I use when I don't want to make it myself. Gotta try some of their other stuff now!
Love watching your show/channel! One of my favorites was you Jimmy Buffett episode, super jealous of the signed picture you’ve had up! Fins up and drink on!
Hey Greg, love the show. I'm curious about the full recipe for the Wonderwall, you said there was triple sec in there but I didn't hear a measurement. Would love to try it!
I'm generally iffy about purchasing expensive bottles of wine, but your incredibly positive reaction to Odin's Skull Mead makes me more willing to try it
I love mezcal! Part of the taste reminds me of a childhood candy which I can't exactly place. Especially in a Paloma with chili flakes. Currently I'm trying to make a Szechuan pepper simple syrup for a spiced mezcal Margherita. Whish me luck haha!
I love liber & co (especially their orgeat and ginger syrup) so I like seeing them get some love! I’m lucky enough to live by a store that carries their stuff The passionfruit syrup works great in a lot of Smugglers Cove recipes as well. They’re great stuff to build out the tiki arsenal
Funny that you got dark fruit cake from that Rum cocktail...I get xmas pudding from mixing OVD dark rum with coke. I think those syrups are really for those occasions when you wanna have a subtle different twist on a regular cocktail without changing up the ingredients so much.
That Liber & Co Old Fashioned syrup is legit! I do add another dash of bitters to mine, but with that syrup I can be super lazy and make INCREDIBLE Old Fashions. Their Fiery Ginger Syrup is also baller!
I introduced my mom to the whiskey old fashioned and now it is her favorite drink. Before that she would drink a horrible rotgut mix of 50% Southern Comfort and 50% lime margarita mix.
I have a couple of those liber syrups, glad they got your seal of approval. Just in case you didn't see the fine print, the ones that I have all recommend refrigeration after opening!
Hey I got ya on that liber co. Been using em for awhile cause you got me into this whole cocktail thing. 1. Rainbow sherbert sour- Hendricks og, lime juice, liber blood orange, egg white (shaken). Bitters like raspberry or something if you want a little complexity. 2. Key lime pie- Pilar blonde rum, lime juice, liber orgeat, egg white. Bonus drink (my favorite) -- Bourbon amaretto sour: 1:1 favorite cask strength Bourbon (the funkier the better imo): lazzaroni peach, with pure cane or light brown simple syrup, lemon juice, and egg white. Peach bitters. I like sours if it's not already apparent. I feel like the egg whites can represent a merengue or sherbert amazingly. And using gins and rums in what i consider sours, but may be classified differently, along with the liber type flavored syrups can make a simple drink complex in all the best ways. Careful with the sweetness however.
I’m so glad I got to see your opinion on xicaru. I work with RDNC and that stuff flys out of our warehouse. Another spirit you need to look out for is woodford reserve rye to me it almost has a mint back note to it that almost reminds me of a good mint tea 🤤
so I got a bottle of mezcal recently, and have been messing around with a few different directions to take it, because yes it is a very powerful flavor, but this one is my current favorite: 2 oz mexcal 1 oz lime 1/4 oz peach schnapps 1/2 oz simple syrup 1/2 oz campari optional egg white top with club soda and garnish with an orange twist.
Some simple show ideas are 1: see what drinks go with what foods actually. 2: can you really make different spirits with neutral alcohol. 3: what are the best variations from the classic drinks. Sorry if you’ve done any of these before.
Greg! Can you update your recipes in Curiada? Seems they have been neglected a little, would love to see some of the more recent ones you've done. Keep up the good work!
I've started making my margaritas with a split base of tequila and mezcal. 1.5 oz tequila to .5 mezcal really adds interest to the cocktail without overpowering anything.
I’m gonna have to keep my eye out for the Liber & Co things. Don’t get much in that way (or liquor for that matter) up in Canada. I’ve actually made a stout beer syrup that I used for a St Paddy’s day inspired cocktail that one oerson ordered at my old work. Lol.
Had a good hard think about that chilli and pineapple syrup from cocktail and sons, of all spirits i ran through, i think either a tequila or mescal could be a shout for experimenting with
I love this kind of stuff, especially to see whats out there that may be helpful (convenience syrups) and good to someone like me who has a lot of mobility problems and thus cant just. Make my own syrups and stuff hhaha. Also idk its just fun watching greg review stuff. Its good stuff
I would gladly send you some of the things that I ran into in Cornwall when I visited there in August. Sadly, though, I can't get hold of it here stateside (and I didn't bring any back with me). They've got some really pleasant gins and rums down in Cornwall, interestingly enough, including Cornish Rock Gin (from the town of Rock). I tried their Gin Sunrise, which is flavored with Valencia orange peel and their Cherry Kiss, which... yes, is flavored with cherry. Either way, though, it was quite lovely. Now we just need to clue Curiada into them. Beyond that, I feel like you need to have a word with The Wizard's Exploratorium, because they do some pretty fun and interesting "potions classes." I had their Time Transfixed, which used a coffee siphon to infuse vermouth and elder nectar with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, orange peel, thyme, and a sachet of paprika. Then you add in rum and lemon juice and warm it back up again. The real fun of it, though, is that you're the one actually making the potions, yourself, they just bring you all of the ingredients and the equipment you need.
I've managed to find a stockist of Odin's Skull in the UK. Today is pay day. Guess I'll be buying a bottle of that then. Edit to say, your reaction sold me immediately :D
I've been using Liber & Co syrups since it was included in a kit from Bespoke Post several years back. Their stuff is always good and their website has a great cocktail list featuring the syrups so you never have to feel like they'll go to waste.
