I can’t believe you get negative comments. What are they complaining about? Your positive outlook? Being encouraging? Being a good teacher? Maybe it’s the soft music at the perfect volume in the background? The good lighting, perhaps - no - it’s the helpful links you’ve provided. All of the above? 😁 Have a great day. I’m going to have a better one now I’ve seen a new way to be productive in my art. Thanks!

So encouraging knowing that I'm not the only one that takes a long time to draw. I do so much analyzing and observing and trying to capture every little detail. I've always felt ashamed of the time it takes me. Thank you for making me feel like its okay. You are such an inspiring artist.

Your videos and advice is so helpful to me. It seems like everyone else is preaching sketch, draw, paint fast, do 15 minute paintings and sketches if you want to improve. But it so doesn't work for me. It doesn't allow for growing your observation skills which is a weak area for me. I love that you say a drawing or painting takes as long as it needs... something I need to take to heart! Better I think for me to make art at least 15 minutes a day, but it can be working on one thing instead of a 15 minute sketch or paint per day. Thank you so much!

Too many people believe there's a magic wand that will instantly make you great at drawing. I'm constantly asked what pencil did i use, what paper etc. Yes good materials are important but not as important as the thousands upon thousands of hours practicing, identifying weaknesses and learning. Great drawing btw smoothie.

Patience and observation rank higher than practice. Yes, I agree. Many times I carry my sketch book but don’t get a sketch in. I am observing as I walk or drive. Observing shapes, values, tone, perspective. So many things that I have spent a half lifetime not noticing at all.

Bravo!!!!! I believe and practice what you said....observation and patience are the keys to drawing and drawing well...I’m so tired of pastel artists trying to paint so fast all the time and beat themselves up for not being “loose” enough....most of their products I can barely stand to look at....they want to stay in the beginners loop forever it seems...thank you for speaking the mature truth of art! Your work is proof of your wisdom.

Another gorgeous landscape to add to your amazing artwork. I totally agree with you, practice isn't as important as observation, practice doesn't always make perfect. This Henry Ford quote is very apt- 'If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got. Observation, carefully replicating what you see, to get the sizes, shapes and angles right. Looking at negative space too to help placement of lines etc. added to this, soft blending, vanishing lines, tones and contrast, it's wonderful seeing what you can achieve. You have inspired me to add more detail in graphite art and to try doing landscapes, thanks Smoothie77.😃

I think that I can say unequivocally that all you say is true, I started to learn to draw when I joined you two years ago and I’ve learnt as much if not more from the sound common sense and you philosophy as I have from the actual drawing. What you say is true the better you get the more closely you observe and I’ve entered a whole new world where I can visualise and see and visit anything I want in my drawings. I remember when you first said to be, as you believe so you will become, and I did in my drawings, and I know without any shadow of a doubt that this will be true too for my watercolours, I trust what you say and if anyone puts themselves in your hands I know that they too can achieve what I have. Therefore I would urge anyone who is doubting to join you without delay and be prepared to see what they can draw because anyone can

You know, I listened to you and took your advice (like drawing something every day, that it takes time, etc... I wanted my drawings to be perfect in a hurry - the old instant gratification, don't ya know) and in one month I am much, much better. I finally am somewhat more satisfied with my end results. Thanks much!

very good work and yes you are totally right.... Drawing is 80% observation and 20% actual drawing.... and I could add that in the 20% comes practice because through practice comas the ability of translating what the brain is capturing through the eye to the paper through the use of your hand. So we need to develop the right connection from the brain to the hand, and that my friend comes with practice, but the art of observing is something that will come with the wisdom, which is attached to the experience of life - aging!!! Have a good day friend.

Surely the whole point of making mistakes is to learn from them? I often do a pre-sketch of a subject to see where I may have difficulty. Then when I do the actual sketch I fix the incorrect parts. I could show you examples.

I just signed up for Jon's Patreon Page and this is something I've wanted to resume for a long time. He is one of the best art instructors out there and a much needed asset for the art community as a whole. Drawing, as drawing, is an amazing gift to offer anyone, but few do it well. You have to learn to observe, record and modify, to meet your personal expression.......but you can't learn to do it well without the proper guidance. So, this is a plea to Jon and anyone out there. I have admired the way Jon draws since finding him on RU-vid. The style is very similar to how I used to draw. But, I haven't done much for years and need to come back home to my hand. I have avoided Patreon because It has been a problem for me in the past. I can't find any guidance on how to properly use Patreon. I get lost. Where is the "Community," page or is that the page that comes up with everything on it? Is there an index to topics or specific demos? For instance, finding a landscape drawing of the Edinburgh Castle, in Scotland or a desert scene with cactus? Can I find these Without scrolling through all the comments? I don't want to miss a thing and scrolling may be the only option, but it's time consuming and awkward. Any suggestions. In other words.......Help!
