They were real mc's from detroit, and were supposed to just do their shi for the movie, but Em still couldnt let them have a free pass

Under the filming of 8 Mile, they brought in MCs from Detroit in the 313 and Dresden area, and the 8 Mile strip to be a part of this s*** so they could come up and freestyle against Eminem

The production team did a contest and let members from the audience battle B Rabbit. We wasn't even supposed to actually rap but "act" like it, hence this is why the mic was off. I think the crowd was getting a little anxious though. Also, he said that dude was from Ohio because he had a "'Bone-thugs-n-harmony" style.

The period line he used in his 1997 rap Olympics battle, I said the same when I heard it.

In the making of the movie, they actually had a contest between all the extras and those 3 were the winners to potentially be used in the movie. In the first battle, he wasnt supposed to rap back which is why is mic was off. He was getting taunted by the crowd and decided to give them something. He was losing his voice near the end of that day which is why his mic was off at the start. Love those deleted scenes.

So this battles was the way to give people some spirit , the spend so many hours on the room with the smoke and the heat that people was getting bored, the production decided to start a battle rounds and the winning people have the chance to show on the video

The first time I saw the battles, I felt so bad for the chick; but was super impressed that Em gave her a hug at the end. Also, I thought there were 4 not 3 but I could be remembering incorrectly. AND I could swear that in the theatre, these scenes were shown b/c I remember seeing them and wondered what happened to them on the DVD but found them on the extras. Your grandma is amazing! Em fan; respect!

To me, Marvin did have a better verse, flow and all-around energy, but that ripped line was my definitive favorite of that battle. Shit had me rolling

Marv talks about it, most of the extras for the film were local rappers, em made sure they got jobs. This was something they decided to do to keep the moral up and have a bit of fun during the long ass shoots

The best view is Marvwon and others from the Detroit area talking about this on Math Hoffa. Only Marvwon couldn't take that opportunity for granted, and then if HE was going to rap, Em wasn't going to stand there and NOT respond. So, some of what Em said wasn't caught as he started rapping but had to fiddle to turn on the mic he wasn't supposed to be using. Rules were which stopped first rather than coming to battle for who's best gauged by audience response, making it more of a TKO than a full punch, especially with voice issues affecting Em and a shooting schedule to consider. However, Marvwon rightfully takes pride in "beating" Eminem and acknowledges how that experience changed his life, especially after it came time to highlight features on the DVD that even got him mentioned in a segment on ET. He said his own mother hadn't believed in him succeeding in rap as a real way to make money but after seeing him on TV she changed her mind and started encouraging him. The most important thing is the 3 Detroiters all have nothing but love for Em and make a point to confirm he DOES put money into the city, including by using as many locals as they could during that 8 Mile shoot and paying top dollar as an hourly wage for doing "absolutely nothing but stand around and meet some of the best rappers in the world"! There's a relationship that formed between Marvwon and Em, and it's really lovely to see people who were there to talk about the reality instead of just repeating the race-baited hate of anecdotes and washed-up DJs/rappers turned podcasters driving clicks and eating off Em's name!

This was better explained on the DVD specials... but you are correct... they needed to entertaint the crowd so they got some underground rappers to freestyle vs Em... but Em's mic was supposed to be off since he was losing his voice... in case they used the battles for the movie they would just do voice overs...

they were doing this to keep the crowd engaged due to the fact that they were there for 15-16 hour days or something so they asked people from the crowd if they had what it takes to battle and if anyone was any good it may go in the movie

This was just auditions. They're basically giving their best to get a part. Em is going off the top to see if their reactions look good on film. The audience is fake reacting for the same reason If Marv would had got the part, Em would have written something specifically for him for the actual movie. He literally did that to Anthony Mackey after he found out Mackey was Clarence whos parents had a nice marriage and he actually went to private school. Then surprised him so the reaction on film was real. Mackey talks about it in an interview after MCU fame.

Honest, Eminem Might have rapped better but I think the chick is the one who won : she did exactly what the title track for the movie says : this moment comes once in a life time yo don’t miss your chance to blow ! She got up and basically face planted in front of Tony Hawk. Not only that but did it free style , not even rehearsed lines like all writers keep in their pocket since Oscar Wilde , she stepped up and was like shot mics on I gotta go . The crowd was as tense as being infront of Eminem . But it’s like the par 25 in Tim cup . Mad love for it !

The director decided to hold a competition with crowd members which the ones that did the battle with Eminem were the ones that won the competition and yes M voice was pretty much dead during that timing so that the Director didn’t want him to battle back but there was a fuck up with the first one with all due respect the first extra got to spit without ‘‘em answering but here’s the thing the second one is where ‘em said fuck it and turn the mic on
