Tazkiyatu nnafs : from ammara bi ssoo2 (the self that ordains you to do evil) to lawwama (the self that accuses you of evil) : fix your diet. Eat talbina and fast. Eat less and abandon all that is not pleasing Allah on the fasting hours. From lawwama (the self that accuses) to mutma2inna (the self that is at peace) : perform tawbah. Start with oral istighfar (asking for forgiveness, lessens guilt enough for you to be able to take small actions) then perform salatu ttawbah (repentance : start by regretting your past actions that make you feel guilty, stop doing them, get away from the conditions that led you to do them and will not to come back to doing it nor its environment again) (it's aligned with modern psychology as well as it has recently been discovered that self control is a depletable resource that can also deplete not just with activities but also with emotional management) as soon as possible

There are steps involved in Istigfaar and Tauba. Its not simply by saying A'udhu billahi min ash shytaani-ir-rajeem. This is too simplistic. To know more plz read the postulates of Istighfar, as described by Imam Ali (a.s), in sermon no. 417, Nahj al-Balagha.
Imam Ali (a.s) in the above stated sermon says : Istigfaar stands on 6 supports. The first is to repent over the past; the second is to make a firm determination never to revert to it; the third is to discharge all the rights of people so that you may meet Allah quite clean with nothing to account for; the fourth is to fulfil every obligation which you ignored (in the past) so that you may now do justice with it; the fifth is to aim at the flesh grown as a result of unlawful earning so that you may melt it by the grief (of repentance) till the skin touches the bone and a new flesh grows between them; and the sixth is to make the body taste the pain of obedience as you (previously) made it taste the sweetness of disobedience. On such an occasion you may say "astaghfiru'llah".
