Decades ago (late 1960's) i rode the longest loop possible around the US on a well worn 1953 BMW r50 that had already clocked well over 100k miles in its life, starting in San Diego rode north on PCH to Seattle/Vancouver then across the northern borderland country to Maine then south on the coast highway to Key West Fla, back north along gulf coast of Florida & west along gulf coast states to the Rio Grande, From the Rio Grande along the river to Santa Fe, then west again through Arizona & California & on back to San Diego. Wished I had more time at that time to head east again riding in a zig zag pattern through through the north and south central states coast to coast. which I had to save for another ride on a different bike in following years. It took a leisurely 8 weeks to make the entire loop around the US without riding at breakneck speeds ( top speed on the old BMW 500cc was 60 mph with the wind at my back) & riding as many secondary & backroads as possible. Made a few more cross country trips on different bikes over the years, riding Moto Guzzi, Norton ,1st gen Honda gl1000, BMW k750 & a '68 Harley Electra-shovel- Dresser/Bagger which become a complete AMF nightmare & nemesis, as it broke down & failed in more ways & at more times than I ever care to remember & that Shovelhead did the last 1000 miles of road in the back of a pickup truck.

@@westho7314 👍Sounds like you did a lap of the country ala Aussie Motorcyclist Doug Sunderland who did 1 lap around his continent clockwise than only had to do it again counter clockwise. This IIRC was after one of his many around the world rides. So you have one more way to do it... ya think?

That's great man. I'll be doing that in the next couple years. I've got another 14-16 day trip to sturgis and back planned this year. Probably next year I'll ride the mid west u.s.a. central area top to bottom. Then hopefully ride east to west the following year. Good luck to you on your travels

@@westho7314 man I bet you have more stories than you could ever remember. I've got many but you have probably forgotten more than I remember. One of my favorite things is when I remember a long lost memory of some situation of a specific person that pops into mind out of nowhere. Something I'd forgotten or haven't thought of in years or decades. It's always a challenge trying to place some of those memories. Where it was when it was. But it's nice to have them none the less

He doesn't know what safe is. If he ever takes a fall at speed he will be a literal bloody mess with what he does and doesn't wear and in particular how he treats his helmets.
