it is in The Hollywood Museum, in the former Max Factor building "The exhibition also features a recently discovered plaque from 1954 commemorating the name of the studio's water tank, called Lake Laurel and Hardy because it had been used to drench the comedians in such films as 1934's "Babes in Toyland." The plaque had been missing since the studio was torn down in 1963." www.latimes.com/entertainment/classichollywood/la-et-classic-hollywood-hal-roach-hollywood-msueum-20140727-story.html

Michael Leeming There is a God and a Heaven and a Hell, but it’s not a club you just get into. The Holy Bible (KJV) John 14:6 says “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. With that being said, Laurel and Hardy were very successful entertainers, but they were also Freemasons, in other words, they, like ALL celebrities in the entertainment industry have traded their souls for fame and fortune, so, unless they repented and accepted Jesus Christ as their saviour before they died, it’s unlikely they, or anyone else will be seen in Heaven.

I grew up watching Laural and Hardy short films , at about 5.45 or 6pm on weekday evenings in the 1970's. There was quite lot of older black and white shows on children's TV then (from the 50s and 60s), even Flash Gordon from the 1930s ! , so I didn't find the old flicking images a problem at all. I always loved the slapstick, the absurdity of how everything went wrong and kept getting worse, and Hardy's deadpan looks to camera, when Ollie doesn't get it. Timeless. I wonder how it would look if Peter Jackson and his team did the same job on it that they've just done on that WWl footage?.

A MOST interesting "Line" given by Ben Shipman who was the longtime manager and partner of Laurel and Hardy. He said of L&H, "The most enjoyable and most wonderful part about working with them has been to observe the extreme loyalty to one another and the desire to please one another. And the desire to make each other successful." -These are all qualities people of today overlook. Everyone is so damn selfish and self-centered nowadays that this kind of sentiment has been forgotten. No wonder most people are floundering. -Bill Howes.

About thirty years ago, when we were still in war with Iraq, the religious mullahs who still rule in Iran caused us to cry every day because of the martyrs who they used to bringing them from battlefields or due to death anniversaries of the Islamic Imams, who were killed in one thousand four hundred years ago, we had to crying every day. In general, life was very sad and depressed. But at the same time, almost once in a season, we had the opportunity to smile a little while watching Laurel and Hardy. Through tough times the world went through, like Americas Great Depression and World war 2, we all needed something to laugh at through these trying times, and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy rose to the screen and delivered true comedy and slapstick for everyone to laugh and smile at. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, where ever you are now, thank you for bringing comedy and slapstick that made the world not miserable, but jolly and happy. Here's what happened. It took a while for them to get to the studio, then go on the air because Stan felt he and Oliver needed to go over some "schtick" to do, as what they do is certainly not spontaneous or improvised. By some accounts, there were other celebs dragged onto the show that disliked the experience, but then there were others that enjoyed it as well. Stan didn't want to appear at all, and Oliver was just being polite. It was live television, so the celebs couldn't just say "No thanks, I'd rather not". While Hal Roach Jr. appears on the show, Hal Roach Sr. does not. Creative differences with Hal Roach Sr. caused Laurel and Hardy to go to other studios, only to have the quality of their later films decline, and they actually had much less creative freedom under the new studios. However, they maintained a good relationship with Hal Jr.

Came here after seeing the film 'Stan & Ollie'. To my understanding this was quite shortly after their British-Irish tour after which they had retired since their health wasn't improving due to aging. I don't know if they had decided on it before this show (I think they had), but the moment Stan puts on his bowler hat for just a jiffy he is back immediately lol. Timeless and they were true buddies to the bitter end. Their comedy was real authentic and sponteniously genuine, unlike the typical must-be-looking-funny-scripting-acting and fake smiling. Stan did write all gags in detail but they were effortless in execution. Really funny. And they still are !

Actually only partially true. Here is what his daughter Lois Laurel had to say on it. “Most people are surprised to hear this, but one of his favorite programs was THIS IS YOUR LIFE. He disliked -- he was stunned! -- being on the show, because he wasn't prepared, and he wasn't in character, but he never missed watching it. Later on he calmed down about being ambushed himself the way they were. But it was because he was always so professional, and here he wasn't prepared, he wasn't in control. That's what he disliked. Besides he said later there were two lives to cover, and no time to do things properly. I mean he was shocked!”

Wonderful episode. Shows the team as two real people. Showed their behind the scene lives which enhances who they were and gives insight to how their loveliness was such a big part of why they worked so well together on screen.

Thank you so much for posting this. I loved watching the old comedies when I was a boy in the early 1960s. Every Christmas the BBC would broadcast Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, the Keystone Cops, and Charlie Chaplin films and my granddad and I would sit in front of the telly to watch them. They still make me laugh today.

I'm in my late 60's and remember getting up early on Saturday mornings and among other things, watched Laurel and Hardy movies. They were so funny. Did anyone else see the one where Stanley had been in the VA hospital after WWI with amnesia? Oliver was to pick him up, so Stanley went outside and sat on a bus bench. He looked over to see newspaper in a wheelchair nearby and sat on it to read the paper. After a while Stanley put one leg up and sat on it. Oliver saw him when he arrived and proceeded to carry Stanley everywhere for several days thinking he was missing a leg. Several days later, Stanley got up and walked with two legs of course and Oliver was quite upset saying to Stanely, "Why didn't you tell me you had two legs?!" Stanley's simple reply was "Well, you didn't ask!!" I hated to see these two guys smoking their way to an early death. Actors were either paid or picked up the habit of smoking as it was considered sophisticated at the time. Hollywood and tobacco companies had a strong relationship at one time. I'm glad those days are over.

Super pair. All participants were good. Loads of negative comments on the presentation but to be fair the outlook of people back in the 50's was far less sensitive than nowadays. It's so politically and emotionally correct these days it's almost impossible to be honest with ones views without upsetting somebody. The lady that brought up the death of Oliver's brother I'm sure only wanted to amplify his bravery. She meant no harm with that I'm sure. Yep, references to weight are taboo, but back then these things were like water of ducks back to these formidable characters, people spoke as it was back then. The presenter was just trying to get rapport as Oliver himself used his size in a comedic way...Rest in laughter gentlemen. I love ya...

Agreed. Spoiled SJW snowflakes, and people who'd rather whine about "fat-shaming" than admit it's unhealthy should probably stay locked in a room by themselves, and avoid contact with people. The rest of us would appreciate that also, so we won't have to deal with them. LOL.
@johnnycalvino7490
@johnnycalvino7490 5 лет назад

Laurel & Hardy fans were annoyed by Ralph Edwards as host and this particular episode years before the advent of the current political American climate. It seems a bit misguided to assume it has anything to do with SJW's or political correctness as to why some people have left certain comments. It has to do with the host and the show's brash and blase attitude to two all time legends, plain and simple. The problem with this show is that Stan and Ollie were two very humble, guys with a gentle sense of humour and the style of patter that this show used didn't mesh well with them. Nevertheless, it's at the least nice to see them make a rare TV appearance.
