Stan Laurel was asked to appear in 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' in 1962 but politely refused. He'd said he would never appear without Ollie after Mr. Hardy's death, and stayed true to his word. What a gentleman, what a giant talent they both were. Thank you for this.
This really touched me. As a sixth grader I mailed Stan a letter letting him know how much I enjoyed watching their movies. He sent back a postcard with his photo. He signed it: "Thanks Anthony. Good Luck Always. Stan Laurel." He died a few weeks later.
@MrQlevert Nope, you're wrong. But I think you know that already, you're clearly someone who spends their life trolling. FYI, Stan was famously a genuinely nice guy who always had time for his fans and was gracious to them all. He was even listed in his local telephone directory, and would chat to anyone who rang him. So take your crappy attitude elsewhere, there's nothing for you here.
@@peachy3143 ant & dec, lol, will never ever be anywhere close at making people laugh, as laurel & hardy did & still do, & no will any other double act, infact i make a point of missing watching ant & dec.
Almost a 100 years later from when they started together and we are still laughing at their brilliance. My 12 year old daughter and i watch them together.
Stan Laurel outlived Oliver by 8 years and was crushed by his death in 1957 and swore never to preform without him again. Despite numerous offers he never did. He was also unique in the fact he usually answered all his fan mail, kept a listed phone number and would let fans in his house for brief visits unannounced.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy - so humble and really a bit shy. Yet the top of the comedy business for 30+ years. We will never see their like again. They were - and will always be - THE GREATEST!
Yes indeed, they were special. Those were different times. People had ambitions and had different values. Nowadays most people are driven by greed in the form of money, posessions or status. Not directly related to being someone valuable. They pretend to be special because they have to be politically correct but most things are just a facade.
@@Pesar25 So profoundly and beautifully written. I agree with you absolutely. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. You indeed hit the nail squarely and sadly on the head. Kindest regards to you and yours...
Thank you so much Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel for making us laugh even after 100 years later 🙏 You'll always be the greatest comedians for the all Time
You're completely right! If it's the greatest of all arts to make people laugh, it's even greater to make them laugh a hundred years later. Their movies and humour are timeless! My kids just love them und watch them over and over again. Never bored! Never! Still laughing tears!
They arrived in Queenstown in Ireland now called Cobh on their tour the big Cathedrals bells was playing their theme song. Stan was so overcome he cried. Both were so humble for geniuses.
Standing up when people where speaking to them, a sign of respect and attention. Gentle, gracious, polite, successful and still humble, never vulgar, 2 real gentlemen who made us laugh so much. If there is a paradise, if i end up there when i die i will thank them for the lifetime of good humor they gifted to me and to all the world.
Sure brother. There is a Heaven. We will all meet up in Paradise. Then we will all live with Jesus, Mama Mary, all the Angels and Saints, our Loved Ones, and also with our Great Favourites Laurel and Hardy, as one big happy united family for all Etetnity. Amen 🙏🙏🙏😊🤗👍
What can I say?? My dad laughed at them when he was a kid, I laughed at them, my son laughed at them, now my grandson laughs at them, humour knows no barriers or age!!
100 hundred years from now people will still be laughing, I'd bet 1000 years from now, people will still be laughing while watching them........provided humans are still around then.
@lulua mahalo Sorry but you’re wrong, it’s got nothing to do with PC. Any book on Laurel and Hardy going back to the ‘60s that mentions this show invariably has a complaint about the boorish jokes of the host of this programme so we can assume that even at the time many people were not impressed. Oliver Hardy was a beloved comedian who didn’t rely on fat jokes in any of his movies so it’s not “part of the fun”, it’s rude.
My internet connection was off for about two weeks and I got a lot of things done and felt good about that. Now, I'm back to watching the world disintegrate.
The likes of Laurel and Hardy will never be seen again. They were geniuses at their craft and their films will shine forever . RIP to both of these incredible men.
Laural and Hardy are the most important components in the history of world comic genius. Period. And the thing that makes it all that more notable is that 100% of their performances and gags are family friendly and free of all smut. They didn't have to be provocative and crude to be funny. And they are just as entertaining today, 90 years on, as they were back then. Legendary
I LIKE "smut." And, no, they were not the "best" comedians: that honor goes to the Marx Brothers and the Monty Python team. And it's "Laurel" not *Laural.
Yet didn't you find the FREEMASONRY reference kinda telling though. I guess that certainly helped their careers. Dont you think. As the World is JW controlled. Especially in their particular industry. 👌
@@LauRa-re9un they both did. Hardy suffered the most because he was cleaned out in a divorce settlement and his illness meant he needed fulltime care for the rest of his day
So respectful, getting up when shaking hands, gentle, shy and modest. They were almost too embarrassed to be there. Love this. The TV shows were so genuine back then. They were on top of the comedy world for 30+ years. Legends.
It was very nice to know that these two were friends first and comedy partners second. Normally one finds out that the members of a comedy duo hated each other ( Abbot and Costello, Cannon and Ball, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin ... ).
Absolutley right! There's nothing else to say about it. I miss this kind of respectful and heartfelt behaviour. It reminds me of my grandpa, by the way also a fan of Stan and Oliver.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this guy was a tasteless hack. I actually remember watching this show as a child. It was more often than not very awkward.
I get what you are saying, but this was live TV at the time, and the timing of the commercial breaks within the program was everything. It was just the way it worked back then unfortunately. Just appreciate the remaining footage that we have of these wonderful gentlemen. Every minute we can find is precious.
Obviously you never seen their routine before. The host did the same . Nowadays you can't do that people are too sensitive, which tv and film suck now.
The greatest comedy team ever on film. They made me laugh as a boy, and more than that, they taught me loyalty and patience and forgiveness that trumped every trouble and difficulty. They were the perfect example of enduring friendship for me. They still bring tears of joy to see them even in this old show.
This show is far too rushed. There were two people being honoured it should have been twice as long. In addition they really.should have given them an opportunity to SPEAK.
These 2 men are absolute legends , for someone who started watching them over 20 years after they had passed , they will be remembered forever , generation after generation, no comedy duo will ever come close RIP
I love these guys. I've watched them most of my life and I wish I could thank them for the thousands of hours of fun and laughter they have given me. They are the best!!
Forget about ( I agree some unacceptable comments). They saw and heard people of past. This is what this show was about. They chose to be guests. I chose to believe that the good time on this show outweighed the awkward moment comments. God bless their souls!!! Great footage!! 🌹🌹🌹
I was thinking the same thing. The host was terrible, he was all over the place. He obviously had talking points but he forced them through instead of letting it flow and allowing the people to speak. Stan and Ollie were great though, in what was clearly an uncomfortable situation for them.
No matter how many times I see their movies they still crack me up. The word Legends is nowhere near big enough to describe these two gentlemen. R. I. P Stan & Oliver
Awesome they were able to put these guys on a show together towards the end of their lives to bring back people from their past and recount memories. Priceless stuff.
Seems strange that even though they had both died before I was born, they feel like part of my childhood as they were so famous and always on tv. They really have lived on after death.
10:20. I first saw this on A & E network in 1988. When Oliver said to/about the woman he used to walk to school with when they were both children, "She's still beautiful". I cried. I was a young man in my 20s, too. He is such a sweet, kind gentleman.
This is really touching. However, I didn’t appreciate all the overweight references/jabs. I counted at least 3. Hopefully Oliver wasn’t sensitive about it, though it was a part of his image and success.
Oliver Hardy was actually quite nimble. A terrific dancer and his movements in his physical comedy are really a joy to watch. I, too, did not think the host should have done that, mostly because Oliver was no longer a young man. He died only 2 1/2 years later. To joke about his weight in a spot in his life like this is bad taste. oh well. Oliver's cool. Appeared that he did not let it bother him, at all. It was part of his image in his work, anyway. We are all taken aback at both of them and their humble, gracious manner. From all of us being children we know them. What a beautiful thing to see them and get to know them outside of their work. Absolutely, fine gentlemen.
He WAS sensitive about his weight throughout his life. As a kid, playing umpire in baseball games, he would walk off the field when the crowd screamed fat jokes at him. Later in life when he married for the second time, to a petite woman, one day as she entered the bathroom to put away towels, a naked Ollie had just gotten out of the shower and he asked her Do you love me? His wife said yes. "How can you possibly love an ugly fat slob like me?" She saw he was serious, so she sat him down and said that his size was a matter of complete indifference to her. She loved him for the way he was inside, and furthermore, if he had not been this size, Laurel and Hardy would never have made it so big and brought laughter to people all over the world." Finally he got it.
This is awsome.. My dad suffered horrible. ptsd after vietnam He would be up in the middle of the night watching laurel and hardy reruns. I would sit with him and watch together
Oh…this is so endearing. I loved these two men so much when I was a child. As an older adult I can truly appreciate what kind, humble people they were. That baby photo of Oliver Hardy was so adorable.❤️
Sadly no longer possible, but just imagine actually meeting Laurel & Hardy? I don't know about LAUGHING, I think I'd be more likely to CRY .... tears of joy! Greatest comedy duo ever! They'll NEVER be bettered!
Was going to say the same thing; what a jerk. Sad to see the look on his. Face when told to stay seated, would his wife have room? Jerk. Here was a big dude, but that was disrespectful.
They were before my time but I was able to enjoy them through the magic of TV as a child. Thanks for all the fun films and many laughs. May you both RIP.
How I miss Laurel & Hardy! They were exceptionally funny! Thank you for this show, brought tears to my eyes, knowing how lucky I was to have been able to enjoy their comedy!
The generation of today do not even come close to this class of human. The word legend(s) is thrown around so easily and is often undeserved. These gentlemen who still make me laugh today deserve the honour. True legends until the end of time.
I love how both Stan and Ollie seemed to have those permanent smiles. They could illuminate a room just with their presence. RIP to two great, charming gentlemen.
Surprised at the high quality of a piece of content this old. This had to be the very earliest days of videotape. Also impressed at the 'flying without a net' nature of live TV in those days. It really did take nerves of steel to go live before an audience of tens of millions. Thanks for posting & sharing this rare historical artifact.
TIYL was broadcast live, thirty minutes is what the network allowed. What you see here is a kinescope... a film taken off a TV screen. I have a copy of the original, there are at least four minutes of commercials not seen here. Ollie was out of breath as he arrived on stage. There were problems getting the guests from the hotel to the studio. Unfortunately Ralph Edwards had to rush all the guests on stage to keep things moving. I read that Stan wasn't used to impromptu shows, he's rather do rehearsed presentations.
@@xmttrman Yes, videotape did not come in until late 1957 and was not widely used until around 1959. As you accurately described, this is a kinescope.....a film shot from a TV monitor. It looks good because by this time (late 1954) the kinescope process (invented in 1947) was pretty well perfected. The show was done "live" and kinescoped for either delayed broadcast to the other coast, or for archiving. Glad we have it as it is Laurel and Hardy's only American TV appearance.
I have loved Laurel and Hardy as a kid and I love them even more now as an adult! It is unfortunate to today's youth that they don't have Laurel and Hardy like "we" boomers still did! And I'm glad that we did! Long live Laurel & Hardy forever.
What absolute gentleman, now these are the type of celebrities we need back, to show what good moral standing and manners are, not the riff raff we have these days in celebrities.
Even though I enjoyed watching this you can tell what poor health Mr. Hardy is in.. Even had I not known the year of his passing I would know by watching this he was not going to live much longer. Which has nothing to do with his weight. These two were brilliant comedians. My daughter and I watched the movie Stan & Ollie last week. At the end I said how great they were and even when I was in elementary in the 80s they would still show us their movies.. She is 15, looked at me and said "wait! That was based on a true story?" I guess I never realized someone had never heard of Laurel and Hardy.
1.5 million views, 1,600 comments, it’s been up for 2 years and I’m the first “like” on this video? Do people not know how RU-vid works? You have to like and comment so the algorithm will share it to more people….. people ought to see more of these two wonderful men so that it keeps their memories alive!
I came across these 2 a while ago and just could not stop laughing! Seeing them here in this interview you can see how very humble they both were ... They are both so polite when being introduced to the lady's when they came threw the doors ... absolutely true gentlemen! Looks like celebrities were very grounded in those days .... These 2 gents were so funny and funny with out talking ! ..
Truly amazing to think this program was recorded when tv was still in it’s early inception and certainly a new platform media wise There was a lot of people who would go on to make an absolute fortune from television 📺. Most of whom probably hadn’t even been born when this first aired. My mum only 15 when it did - ha - amazing 😉 - I love these blasts from the past - Laurel & Hardy were such an enormous influence on comedy - it can never be understated - and of course there were a few who got exceedingly wealthy from their many films - it is with great sadness how so much of their money 💰 didn’t in fact find its way to their pockets. I think the both of them died practically destitute - and that’s just criminally wrong. A sad story that’s left many talented people strewn in its path. These guys were brilliant at what they did. May they rest in peace ✌️. Thanx lots for uploading this great piece of history. Cheers 🥂
My grandfather and I used to sit and watch these gems every Saturday for years. He's gone but he still sit next to me and laughs every time I get a chance to watch this duo.
My Grandad had all the episodes recorded on vcr, i watched them endlessly as a kid in the 80s, legends may be an understatement. The world certainly changed.
The world certainly has changed and not for the better. By the 21st century don't you think the world should be a much better place? Disappointed, lied to as child, and totally disillusioned. J. XXX
They are the greatest. If their souls are still making us laugh and spreading joy, that is not death. They still are the greatest. Comic genius always wins over the vulgarity that we see as faux comedy today.
I recall watching their shows when I was a youngster. They made me laugh. And with the advent of the Internet and RU-vid I began to watch their shows and films over and over again. The funniest duo ever - you guys were outta this world!
They both clearly didn’t want this happening but, true classy gentlemen they are, they went along. May these two exquisite geniuses continue to rest peacefully. P.S. Everyone watch ‘Babes in Toyland’ and them moving a piano up some stairs in their blessed memory.😊
Barf Edwarts is so brimming with contrived game show host fluff that he's almost impossible to listen to. Curt, overbearing, consistently barging in and underhandedly rude. The kind of guy that probably didn't get much attention as a child (for good reason), and was inevitably destined to become a Hollywood emcee. Laurel and Hardy seem almost oblivious to his over the top smarminess and condescension at their expense. The Susie Homemaker of hosts and a voice that could slice through rubber. Back in that day, he was probably regarded as a saint. But Laurel and Hardy are so sweet, sincere and genuine it is almost comical to watch their dichotomy in this episode.
I agree. Laurel and Hardy had nothing to prove - they were already a world wide success for many years, loved by millions across the globe. This presenter was a mediocre presenter climbing the greasy pole of accession in Hollywood. He could have shown more respect to both of them. After all and at the end of the day, who remembers his name today?
