Hey all! Hope you enjoyed this video. This flugelhorn is a ton of fun to play, and I honestly didn’t realize how amazing its tone was until I listened back, months later, to those recordings I took. Stay tuned for more reviews! Next week on Scholastic Brass Month we’ve got some French horn content lined up!

I know you have the 8d but what other French horn stuff are you doing

@@RaichuEnjoy I can't reveal too much, but expect videos on a Conn, a Holton, and a Yamaha. I've already reviewed my 8D on the channel, but I'll be reviewing a different Conn! Think step-up model.

@@SamuelPlaysBrass cool, maybe you could try to get your hands on a mellophone if that’s possible

That you for the sound samples! I've been considering one of these. I'm mainly a tuba player, but I adore the tone.

Hey, Sam. Just came across your channel recently and like it a lot! Liked and subscribed. I foolishly sold my brand-new Yamaha 731 flugelhorn to a friend when I concentrated on playing synthesizers/keyboards - I never thought I'd have a reason to play the flugel again. Bad move! 😞 But, after a lot of shopping 15 years ago, I bought a gently used Juptier 846S flugelhorn which - you know - is a replica of the 731 ... happy again! 🙂 After I dropped some cash to have Bob Reeves' shop perform a PVA on the 846S, it played even better and when I took it to another shop to compare it to several Besson flugelhorns made by Kanstul, at least for playing jazz, I felt/heard no advantage in those other higher-end flugels; same thing happened when I extensively play-tested a Flip Oakes Wild Thing flugel made by Kanstul. For my purposes anyway, the Jupiter 846S, which is very similar to the 1100R that you tested but without the 3rd slide trigger, suits my needs quite well. Keep up the good job!

Thanks for your comment! I was surprised to see, upon some Googling, that the 846S does indeed have the same .433” medium bore as the Yamaha 731. However, that makes it pretty different from the more recent 1100 series, which has the classic French bore around .413” at the valve section. I’m wary of overstating the effects of one snapshot measure of bore size on an entire instrument, but it does make quite a difference on flugelhorn, because the valve section occurs so quickly after the receiver. Chances are your 846 (assuming it has the same bell flare diameter as the 1100) is a little less dark and smoky than the 1100, but projects better and potentially feels a little more consistent to play down to the low register. Either way, glad to hear you’re happy with it, even if it did mean spending a little extra on a PVA! I was thinking of going that route with my main Yamaha 8310 trumpet once I have that sort of change lying around.

@@SamuelPlaysBrass You know what's strange? The 1100 is listed as having a .433 bore on some websites, and then .413 on Jupiter's website. I'm guessing that Jupiter updated the bore size on its current models (JFH1100RQ and JFH1100RSQ) to satisfy those folks who believe that a .433 bore flugel sounds "tubby." Yeah, a Bob Reeves PVA can do wonders - it also helped my 1964/5 Conn Connstellation 38B a lot as well. But, yes, I agree -- $$$$$ for sure.

hey im a beginner player ! comming from Jazz guitar ! what do you think about Carol Brass instruments ? i have no idea if they are good i just love the look of them and heavy caps and buttons

CarolBrass instruments are quite good! I've reviewed a couple on the channel, but admittedly not the ones with really ornate heavy trim. I think they are a much better choice than the other budget-friendly, 'cool-looking' choice: generic Chinese factory models that tend to be very inconsistent from one to the next. CB's quality control is much stronger and their instruments are very well-designed.

What do you think about Jupiter 846R flugelhorn?? Is it a instrument to study?
@SamuelPlaysBrass
@SamuelPlaysBrass Год назад
I’ve never played one, but it is supposedly a professional version of this instrument. I think this instrument is already a good one, so the 846R must be as well.

@@SamuelPlaysBrassHey, guys. Sam, I just looked at the Jupiter website and the only flugelhorns that are listed are the clear lacquer and silver plated models of their JFH-1100. And, I think that the only real diff between the 846 and 1100 models was the 3rd slide trigger ... my 846S doesn't have one. Both models, however, I believe were considered their intermediate level flugels, which may be more of a justification for charging more for their XO pro line manufactured in Japan. Roger Ingram famously plays or played Jupiter's XO line and a trumpet model that I think Roger helped design because a lot of folks started referring to that trumpet as the Roger Ingram model.

HI Sam. I have a 846R. Do you know the real difference with 1100?
@SamuelPlaysBrass
@SamuelPlaysBrass Год назад
It’s an older iteration of the same model. Jupiter re-numbered all of their instruments (700 = beginner, 1100 = intermediate, 1600 = XO or professional-tier).
