This is my review and play test of the new Yamaha 8315G Flugelhorn.
A brand new design based on the traditional smaller bore size preferred by players around the world.
The YFH8315G is a fresh and unique addition to the Yamaha flugelhorn lineup designed by Yamaha in conjunction with Wayne Bergeron and Jeremy Pelt with a new trigger system which is more ergonomic and will accommodate a wider range of hand sizes and also a newly designed lead pipe.
Specifications
Key Bb
Bell Material 2 piece gold brass
Bell Diameter 151.8mm (6 inches)
Bore size 0.413 note the 631 is 0.433
Available in silver plate or laquer.
Please note currently the Silver plated version may have the serial 8315G marked and not 8315GS but this is subject to change.
The silver plate version has a gold brass bell but is still finished in silver plate
The instrument also features a new leadpipe design, with the outer leadpipe area and a new connection brace between the leadpipe and the valve casing. Monel pistons are resistant to corrosion and are an ideal choice for professional flugelhorn pistons which must retain precise fit and smooth action over many years.
I give my opinion of this flugelhorn compared to the Yamaha 631 and the 8310Z Bobby Shew model. I take a detailed look around this Flugelhorn. Please hit like on the video and share it around as there seems to be a lack of reviews currently on this instrument. Any questions ask away below and I will do my best to help.
Happy Playing!

Great video! Can you tell me if you have ever held a 631G? I owned one once and I always felt that it felt heavy. What are your impressions of the weight of this horn? Thanks again for the informative video.

schilkeman Hi yes I did. I can only guess that the weight is similar but you can probably find out from the yamaha website. Here's some information about the original 631. drive.google.com/file/d/0B2PFlMAzVm_SZGY3ZTBlNTMtYzM0MC00OWY0LWI3MGItOGEyNTU3YWEwNjAy/view

Every time I hear a Yamaha 8315G, no matter who's playing it, the tone just blows my mind.

Thanks for making this video - much appreciated. The horn sounds beautiful, really beautiful. I once owned a Yamaha 731 flugelhorn (silver version of the 631) way back when, when Chuck Mangione was playing one, but after all my calls for paid gigs involved me playing my keyboards, I stupidly sold it which I still regret to this day. I was gifted a Jupiter 846S flugel made in Taiwan, which is a knock-off of the 731, and it comes darn close! All my paid gigs are still for playing keyboards, but I'd love to buy an 8315G one day... Thanks again for this nice demo.

A John Packer JP175 Bb Flugel Horn silver plate found me for a song, as new, from well known bay site, beautiful tone, slick valves and loving it.

I like this one. Between this and the Conn I would take either. It's a hard decision.

Nice jammy playing! Looks like a gorgeous horn. It’s the heating and air-handling equipment in the background that worries me - have all the parts and components been recently oiled? The filters changed regularly? Is the dew point under control to protect your equipment on palettes?

Hey thanks so much for your various reviews - I like all the instruments you've reviewed and am going to make a trip to Rosehill to try a few. Your reviews have saved me quite a lot of time in preparing for this and have been really helpful for getting my head round the different specs and nuances. As a matter of interest, are you still playing the Courtois 154? I'm seeing that and the 8315 as front runners. (I'm playing brass band and currently on the band's Yamaha 6310Z which I like but am looking to upgrade and buy my own.)
@stampysrandomreviews

Adam Pearson Yes I still use the courtois. I would say the courtois is more in tune overall and I like the bottom sprung valves. I use the Yamaha all the time it's a great all round instrument and feels a little fuller than the shew models

@@stampysrandomreviews Fantastic - thanks. Do you mean you like the bottom sprung valves of the Yamaha? I find them a bit of a fiddle to clean (e.g. trying not to lose the springs or get them tangled, and them get them in position and silent again once back in) but then again at least you can easily get to them. A few more questions for you please: What do you use the 2 instruments for and why is it good to have both? You mentioned the 8315G is easier to play than the 154, especially at the top end. Can you say a bit more? Also - any thoughts on silver vs lacquer, and did you try any different bell types? And what bell is your Courtois? Thanks. Much appreciated. I've only been playing brass for a couple of years (string player and singer before then). Now doing an hour or two practice a day and wanting to maximise my progress and playing - hence wanting a good instrument that's going to help me play well and in tune.
