The fact that you're willing to say when you agree with her is telling of your character and your priorities. You clearly care about the turtles. The fact that she CANNOT and used a freak accident to discredit you is wild.

Yeah, I just created a brumation chamber for mine to come and go from at their choosing. Also, a note on captive breeding animals having their natural instincts... one of the coolest things I did was letting my CB Eastern Box Turtles take a dip in the bog filter of our koi pond and they immediately started hunting and eating snails under the water just like wild caught specimens would do--and they did that from the first time put in there. And yes, drainage was my first concern when I saw that--we have clay so I built up the brumation area for ours--several inches of soil about the ground level (which is about 6-8" above the clay layer) then some pavers with a big piece of slate--that creates the structural stability for adding more soil and mulch in a mound overtop with just a 5" opening. Inside is some garden soil mixed with peat moss for humidity. Also, on that end of the enclosure, I put some hard clear plastic on the lid to keep cold winter rain from getting into the opening... it's worked well each year and it's interesting to see how each season, they emerge in the same order days apart--oldest comes out first and the two younger ones about a week later and a few days apart each. I've checked on them once the weather warms and they are always buried the same too--oldest digs in the least. One of the younger ones digs in further and the other below that one. Same order for 4 years in a row.

This lady force-brumating her turtles has the same energy as people who ask about safe foods to feed deer with. The concern is there, they clearly care, they're just expressing it in a way that actually hurts the animals, especially their natural lifestyles.

What an argument she put up “he’s not to be trusted because half his turtles died.” With never explaining why or how. I think she was just so offended you disagreed she went personal. Not the best look.

We can all be guilty of misquoting without having the full picture, as I did with her video originally because I didn’t know she slowed them down and let them begin to hibernate before burying them. Regardless, it’s why it’s important to do research yknow? Hence why I did that for this video, looked into allll of her vids to get the facts

When I was a little kid, we had an Eastern Box turtle given to us as a pet in Colorado. We had him for a couple of years, we would keep him in the closet in the winter. One year, he stopped eating and drinking for several days, so we thought he died. We buried him in a coffee can and shortly moved away after. A couple of months later, my dad was contacted by our old neighbors, apparently, he wasn't dead, he unburied himself and was found walking around. He was apparently given to animal control, i don't know what happened to him after that. It was the early 90's we didn't have a lot of avenues to access information. Kind of funny to hear that it may actually just have been brumation. We were painting and had the windows open a lot, so it was the first time he was exposed to cold air.

It's just very upsetting and unforgivable when a "person" has to put another down, and pour salt in an open wound to get views, which is quite obviously what that "person" did!! I felt your hurt when you put your videos out about what happened to your beloved turtles... I'm sorry you had to go through that, as you are very knowledgeable, and care DEEPLY for your turtles!!! In my opinion it it quite OBVIOUS who to trust and who to get the BEST information from!!! Thanks for all you do Dan....for all of your viewers AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOUR TURTLES!! Yes, animals like this have innate abilities, innate meaning they are born with this instinct. With my painted turtles they do it themselves in the bottom of the pond. They will also come up on their own if it’s sunny out and warmer. I live in Northern Virginia so it does get freezing but they do it themselves. They also will come up early if they want then go back down.

Wow..and all this time I thought I was pretty smart about animals..how did I NOT KNOW THIS!!! Thanks for educating me....I agree with you 100% after learning about this... I think I would put them in a box in a fridge ... or I would allow them to do it themselves but with help..by digging up soil and making it loose for them so they can attempt it if they don't get it right well thats when I would step in ...but this is why I don't own animals I don't know enough about...before I get any living creature I like studying them... and learning everything I can so if they get sick..pregnant..or for general health problems I can kind of know what's up..& if I can't figure it out the vet will...anyways I just wanted to say thank you for teaching us the correct way

We have 5 desert tortoises, only thing we did was make the "den" for them, about 3 -4 feet in and across, they got a wooden top, and dirt back over it, they do the rest. lol they have made a crap ton of tunnels for them selfs that they hibernate in, if we know it’s going to be really cold we place hay over the opening to keep a decent warmth for them yet also the cold, yes the hay has a small opening if they decide to pop out. I was laughing this yr, because our temps have been crazy, in the 80’s then down into the 50’s on them nice warm days we would see a couple out sun bathing. They just went under and stayed the first week of November. lol crazy the last few yrs they went down mid October, so they where enjoying them warm days. But they are all sleeping now until March or April. Depends on when they feel it’s warm enough, got to love the fun critters so personable; and each one has its own fun things it will do. Specially the one that knows it’s chow time. lol tfs this crazy lady’s way I find it nuts. But that’s me. ❤

I actually gave one of my baby sliders to my friend because I had 2 and a Western Painted, and with three I'd have to eventuality make them outdoor all year turtles, and I can't do that lol. So nope. But my friend is giving him or her a great home. I just can't trust it. How do you keep yours safe from predators when they are out side? And that was a shitty thing for her to say.

We need to know the difference between "Captive Bred" especially in mammals and reptile.. While in mammal, they tend to need some care and learn some survival skill from their parents, hence they have rewilding project before releasing to nature.. While most reptile, dont.. U can release a captive bred turtle into the wild just fine, and they will survive.. But be wary, they must be indigenous species to be release in to the wild... BTW, this lady trigger me so much too.. 😂

you should make a video on this youtuber called MRHILLBILLY all caps he’s kind of cringe but his videos are questionable by making really cool paludariums and scapes but them just overstocks them and fills them so much with animals that shouldn’t be together ever and sometimes like makes them seem like ‘monsters’ or make them seem evil/bad

Omg! NO!!😱🤯😭💔🐢 I have 6 rescue “pet” box turtles. Each has some type of disability, & thus cannot make it in the wild on their own. 4 adults & 2 babies that I’ve raised since their first year of life. I cannot even IMAGINE doing this to my sweet “Turts”, as I affectionately call them.🥰🐢 I have a very large wooden fenced-in yard that they all live outside in the warm months. They have a large soaking pool and water and food dishes also during their outdoor time. During the cold months- I built 3 large wooden indoor enclosures that they all live in, in a separate, climatized room, specifically humidified and kept at the safest temps for them, while indoors. The adult females & males are separated, while indoors. The 2 babies have their own enclosure, with their adoptive “Mama Turt”. I fill these enclosures up to abt 8” with fresh peat moss & change every 2 months. They all have their own drinking and soaking pools, so that they don’t get dehydrated. I feed them ONLY fresh fruits and veggies. And, 3-4 x’s per week, they are given the option of FRESH, live earthworms. (They NEVER turn those down!) Also, 3-4 x’s per week, I put them into my LARGE bathtub with temperature checked lukewarm-warm water, up to the safe depths for their sizes. The adults have their depth & the babies have a much more shallow depth of water. I treat their shells with safe medicine, if they show any issues. I know I may over-do it a bit with their level of care, while indoors for winter, but burying them alive is just horrible & cruel torture! If they can’t do their own safe burying, they need indoor winter care. If u can’t do that for them, plz give them to a turtle-loving person who CAN!! 🙏🏼♥️🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

question do you have to brumate turtles or is it just a option. like a red eard sliders if they are capable and if they do I do not really know.
@AabluedragonAH
@AabluedragonAH 8 месяцев назад
As far as I know, brumation isn’t necessary unless you’re trying to breed your turtles. After a few winters, their sex drive (and aggression for male turtles) goes down. My eastern box turtle hasn’t brumated in the last 16ish years as it just doesn’t get that cold in Hawai’i. She’s as spry as ever and scales walls no problem.

Man, I understand you’re trying to be nice, but you don’t have to be this nice. If she’s telling people not to trust you because of that one unlucky illness event (that you shared with us so we could learn from your unfortunate experience) then she’s displaying her lack of knowledge and understanding. Yea she has a firm grasp of the basic stuff, but she stopped there. For me, it’s very concerning that she doesn’t understand how diseases work in these animals, but feels comfortable giving people advice that would see them unnecessarily expose their animals to microbes and parasites. Just my opinion though.
