The thing is- she even says she knows when the bees are not hostile- she knows what she’s doing she’s just informing people in what she loves doing. She isn’t telling anyone to do it and what she wears is her choice. It’s HER job. She knows what she’s doing while other people rarely do.

This. It's the same reason why I could approach a dangerous dog more easily than others bc I have training people without training no matter what the thing is should ALWAYS take more precautions. But those who know more about what they are doing might not always need to. It's a pity others can't see that. But like in this instance I'd NEVER suggest a random person try to just tackle an aggressive dog bc that wouldn't be safe. But if someone works in rescue like I do and knows what they're doing wants to try with less gear then they know the risks and can choose to take them. It's just common sense and I'm sure if she met an aggressive swarm she probably wouldn't even be recording it she'd be more likely to just suit up and deal with it bc it needs her full attention.

She never said she was trying to teach people how to reolcate colonies. She's literally just vlogging. I don’t understand how she’s getting backlash. She’s a PROFESSIONAL bee-keeper. She knows how to take care of the Bees and move them from one place to their new hive WITHOUT. the need for protection! Also she’s NOT an influencer, she’s not going out there saying people should do what she does without proper training and whatnot!

I think a huge misconception about her and about the many other beekeepers who choose to only occasionally wear ppe when tending to their hives is that they don’t get stung. They ABSOLUTELY get stung sometimes! Do they care? No. Do they get mad? No. Why? Because they love bees.❤🐝

Protective gear is not always necessary. I have worked my hives as an amateur beekeeper for over 30 years and normally do not use any protective gear, but I choose when I open the hives - or recover a swarm from a building. I do not even own a bee suit. If I felt that a colony removal required one, I would refuse the job. There are always members of your local beekeeping association who would be willing to do the job. Watch 628dirtrooster's videos about swarm removals from structures if you want to see videos where the beekeeper often gets stung. He always wears as little protective equipment as possible, which often is none at all, not even a veil. The only disagreement I have with his videos is that he often works too fast and sometimes gets stung quite a bit more than he should.

i've seen a LOT of bee keepers work without protection. It honestly comes with years of experience and recognizing early signs of a calm colony and an aggressive one. 100% she suits up if it's an aggressive colony.

You know, in rural village near where my grandparents used to live, people there take care and harvest wild honey bees in forests with their bare hands without any protective. And they have done that for hundreds of years. The honey from that region is famed throughout my country.

I've written to her many times in hopes of having a meaningful discussion about her approach to beekeeping. I do interviews with beekeeping experts, I hope she agrees to an interview. Her approach is so novel and I have many questions as a Master Beekeeper and educator. Looking forward to learning more about her soft-spoken dealings with bees in Texas. @@FrederickDunn Thank you for your kind response. My own bees are very easily to handle with my bare hands and i don’t need protection. Only when food is getting lost or something isn’t right.. i’m wearing protection gear. I’m teaching my friends and family about bees and how to take care of them. Bees are literally sitting on my hand sometimes or seeking help when injured. My “wild” hives is on our house wall & the other 3 bee colonies are in separate beehives on a lovely place. I’m feeding sugar water to injured & sick bees only when they are very exhausted. Sometimes i’m leaving water drops outside for bees to drink.:)

Ask her if she's doing anything to save Native Bees as opposed the the money making non-native honey Bees. Which are the only ones I've ever seen her save. She's so calming to watch as well, I follow her and I don't get why people are so worried about bees. I pick bees up with my bare hands all the time. (not bees in their hive, just bees I find on the lawn or whatever). Never been stung. All my school friends get really freaked out whenever I pick one up, and some of them will scream and run away, and I have to explain that bees won't sting you unless you disturb their hives or whatever.

what she is doing is risky, sure, but: 1) it is risky to herself only and has accepted that responsibility 2) since beekeeping is not a common job and only professionals do it, inexperienced people can't follow her example and get harmed 3) bees are actually really friendly, you can let one crawl on your arm and it is chill, af, plus they recognize faces, so what she is doing is not that dangerous 4) actually, for most people, even multiple stings are not dangerous, just painful, only people who are allergic are in danger, but those people already run the opposite direction in the face of a bee, so again, if anyone followed her example and went to pet a bee or something, they'd be fine if they got stung, its not a big deal I know I made tons of contradictions in my statement, but I made them on purpose to cover the multiple what ifs

This Friday never identified herself as a beekeeper, but as a removal specialist. More than likely, when she does a removal, she goes in fast and furious. When done, she does not put the combs and bees in a hive, but kills the colony and extracts the honey.

My friend’s grandmother was similar to this. There was a huge hornet nest right on her front porch, and she kept it there since they ate the flies and mosquitoes. She even laid out peaches to attract flies for the hornets. she’d sometimes even sit outside, literally covered in hornets. She put a net around the nest to keep her grandkids from bothering them. However, the net ended up destroying the next during a rainstorm, so -and I kid you not- She went outside in the pouring rain and took the net down, and then used masking tape to patch it back up. This entire time, she was coping these hornets, saying things like "now now, calm down,” and she took the masking tape off after the rain, so the hornets could repair their nest. She was like the hornet equivalent of the Crazy Cat Lady. She passed away a few years ago, and now my friends at her house.

I’ve seen her a couple of times before. She isn’t crazy, and she is actually amazing at her job. You don’t need a bee keeper suit, most people just prefer it so they don’t get stung. She tries her hardest to protect them and build a relationship with them! For my whole life I’ve been scared of bees, until I learned they aren’t hostile as long as you don’t scare them. Now my favorite insects are bees and I really hope the bee activists can save them!

That’s cool! I always try to not hurt bees one time one was in my school so I caught it this light bag I had in my backpack and released it around the flower patch near my school I was a little nervous but I feel really bad when bugs get stuck in doors and try to escape same thing happened with a dragonfly hah I’m still kinda scared of bees and wouldn’t wanna keep em but it feel nice to do stuff for them!(just not being with them haha)

Erika is also AMAZINGLY slow and methodical in her handling of the bees. She doesn't care how long it will take to move a hive. The most important part to her is the health of the hive. Most likely she doesn't need protective gear because of how she handles them. Rushing the bees or not reading their attitude leads to stings. And I'm sure she has been stung...but she doesn't let it bother her. But typical how other women are jealous of her abilities, so they have to put her down. :-(

in summary, common sense is endangered also, chamberlain is a REMOVAL specialist. Erika intends to KEEP them and nurture them and grow their colonies. that’s the main reason (imo) chamberlains team has all the short hair extra prep etc, because they are going in aggressive, and the bees can sense it.

Okay, as a beekeeper I too will handle bees without any protection, every beekeeper has their own style and while most have some sort of protective layer on, some won’t, some feel that without any gear you get more of an experience with the bees, at least that’s how I felt. Let her bee keep the way she wants to bee keep. She knows what she’s doing and how she’s doing it. You can also see in her videos the smoke from a smoker so you knows the bees were being calmed down and weren’t aggressive towards her

I never hated bees, i once got stung when i was in kindergarden because i accedentaly stepped on her so i burried her next to a lot of flowers so that her friends would visit and just a while ago i saw one in my garden and put my hand next to it on the grass and it was just so fascinating, it was just walking around and exploring and i loved it, Weeks later my mom hasn’t mowed the lawn for a while and when i layed on the trampoline i was so happy because there were bees EVERYWHERE and they are adorable :’)

I honestly think that’s the issue. She’s a she. It’s ridiculous. I’d feel better having her transport a hive because they don’t seem to be stressed at all. The full suit ones are hella aggressive. That’s just anecdotal of course, but I live in almond country in California- TONS of beekeepers every year. The farmers have a list of favs and I don’t think any of them wear the bee keeper suits.

People tend to forget something: bees aren’t naturally violent towards humans, they don’t attack unless they feel at threat, they won’t sting you just for the fun of it like a wasp would do, she’s being careful and safe with them, so they’ll be nice to her. I can't remember the names, but just in the past 2 or 3 weeks, I've seen 2 other beekeepers like her in my shorts. The most protection I've seen between them was one wore gloves, once. And that was because the bees were already agitated. Now beyond the professionals, you can still see how groups of people from different parts of the world collect honey, and beeswax, without any protection or tools as well.

If you get stung by bees and get any reaction to it just go to the ER. It's not always easy to know when your throat is slowly swelling shut. There is no panic when you can breath normally but get less air and you get higher euphoria and get more sleepy (like it's hard to stay awake) the less air you get. It's really hard to notice if it happens when going to bed and if you never had similar reaction before. I got stung by 2 wasps or bees first time in my life, I took whole bee sting emergency packet (3 cortisol tablets) and felt much better but 24h later when going to sleep my throat started to swell. I noticed it when hearing rattling/gurgling sound when I was breathing and I felt very light headed when trying to get up. I noticed sudden sleepiness and good feeling before that but I was just happy for that since it was late at night.

My grandpa is a beekeper and he does not wear any protection, only the beekeper's hat when "bees are not in the mood". Thus, what she says and does completely correlates with the beekeeping I saw. Dunno why anyone would doubt it, if they have actually worked with the bees or at least searched info. However, my grandma is highly allergic, so she covers herself completely. Everyone reacts differently, but if you have any allergies - most likely the reaction to the bee sting will be aggressive. It's up to oneself if they wish to approach any potentially dangerous animal without any knowledge or at least protective gear 🤷🏻‍♀️ Swarm indeed will not sting you if you don't touch it and if they are in a calm mood, but it takes a lot of time and dedication to learn behavioural patterns for understanding the bees.

SHE'S A PROFESSIONAL. She knows how to handle things. She's been doing this for a long time and she's been taking good care of the bees. She saved/helped many colonies of bees. Goodness.... She's not a novice, she's a PROFESSIONAL.

"she makes it looks like anyone can do it " so does any professional in any kind of video. I've seen plenty of videos of a guy treating a cow's claws and i'm not feeling like it would be any easier for me. Can people start using their brain already ? Any artist at circ du soleil probalby makes a lot of stunts seem ridiculous and nobody is trying to do them at home, jesus

If you’re talking about LA bee Rescue (I can’t remember their name tbh) they use they/them pronouns. I got into a huge fight with LA after I told them that some of the things they said about Erika (Texas Bee) were very misogynistic.

Everyone is talking about Erika and how she's a professional who knows what she's doing, and I totally agree. But what I'm wondering is why Friday felt the need to include "all us FEMALE removal specialists." I don't see what being female has to do with this issue at all and why it's even being brought up.
