Hi it is RJ... I know nothing about planes. I live in Auburndale. This is so cool. The videos are great. I'm a Vet at 72 soon. I wished that I could have got into planes. Back in the 90s a friend was showing me about them. Sometimes I think I'm flying. I watch's all that you do on the planes. It is cool to watch. Thank you.

Little bit of history’s from WW2, concerning the Supermarine Spitfire. Mushroom-head rivets are far less labour intensive than countersunk, but the countersunk are better in terms of drag. They want to have the Spitfire as slippery and fast as possible but with regards to speed of assembly. So, they made an all-countersunk Spitfire and then glued split peas of the countersunk rivets, in various positions and patterns, until they came up with a good balance between the mushroom headed and countersunk, in terms of speed of the aircraft and ease/speed of assembly. Aren’t people amazing?

I was working on my RV 4 one day( installing new baffles on the engine) , Herb Colbert came by and was looking at the insulation he said you're doing a good job there, but, when herb Culver says but I pay attention ! He sketched out a little baffle assembly to help clean up the air coming out of the engine cowling on the bottom, we picked up an average of five knots across the board I made it quick install/ removable so we could test performance. Hiya Jimmy - years ago Sun n Fun sponsored a race from some airport in GA to Bartow Florida. I entered the race with my Super Cub in the 150 HP Class. Us 3 cubs and a T-Cart has lots of competition including RV-4s with O-320's.. But...I wanted to make a good showing with my cub so I sealed all the gaps - it took a lot of tape. I don't believe I got much speed increase, but the fuel burn improved by more than 10%.

The most efficient planes in the air are sailplanes. Hold that thought. Things sailplanes do (gliders) to make them more efficient are: - use mylar tape tape on the seals - divert the exiting air from cockpit to a single spot (often at the base of the rudder) - seal up the air going from the cockpit into the wings (this one seal makes a significant difference)...having air exit at the ailerons = no bueno Those are all that come to mind.
@gmcjetpilot
@gmcjetpilot 2 года назад
What do you mean efficient? You mean impractical and unable to stay in the air without sun or winds for lift. Ha ha. I think you confuse efficiency with glide ratio and low drag. Yes they generally have better glide ratio and lower drag than powered planes. However there are powered planes that are very efficient, think of them as powered gliders. However an engine sticking out, higher aircraft weight causes loss of efficiency. Back to first 2 sentences above. You can't take 250 people from New York to Paris in 7 hours in a glider. Definition of efficient is vauge. Do you want to go to war in a F-22 or a glider.

That prop blade angle on Cameron looks pretty aggressive, if it's a ground adjustable and you have some wiggle room with the max engine RPM you should maybe try and decrease the blade angle to have more of a 'climb prop' than a 'cruise prop' for this competition. Fine wire spark plugs, solid state sparky boys and trying to lean for best power at wide open throttle frequently could make it competitive with the 401. Always love these videos, great stuff Jimmy! 👍👍

Jimmy, you should put a gear locked annunciator in the Lancair. I put one in mine, and it makes it easy to know when the gear is locked in position. In addition to the three green for down, it is a backup indicator for all three down and locked as well as when the gear is properly up, which is handy since our gear is only held in place by pressure.

Jimmy for future reference you should drill your holes in the trailing edge of all of your control surfaces so that in flight they drain if there is water and sitting on the ground when it rains they drain. Water in the ailerons is quite dangerous, they are counter-weighted against the occurrence of flutter and with any amount of water inside, the counterweights are no longer balanced and heavy enough to stop flutter. You had likely doubled the weight of the ailerons with all that water inside them. At higher speeds a serious hazard and catastrophic loss of both the ailerons was quite likely.

I have used soaring tape for years on my Debonair, sealing the wing root rubbers on the bottom sides of the wings. Installed flap and aileron gap seals years ago too. then did a very accurate rigging of the flaps and flight controls. It accounted for 8 kts difference in cruise and 200 ft/min climb rate increase, so you will see improvements. After seeing the water coming out of the ailerons, I had to stop the video and comment. The concern I have after seeing the water leaking out from drilled holes in the ailerons is flutter. With all that moisture in there I can't imagine your flight controls are balanced. Another point along those lines is the tape coming up from the seal around the flight controls. Steve Wittman died as a result of fabric separating (a bubble in front of an aileron) creating an aerodynamic imbalance which started a high speed flutter. The point is the faster you go the more critical the balance of the flight controls have to be. And a home built aircraft, built by someone else, needs to be carefully examined and checked. Anyhow, back to the video. w
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 года назад
Flutter from unbalanced control surfaces is certainly an issue with faster homebuilts, and while it's not good to have water in control surfaces throwing off balance, I doubt it would contribute to flutter unless the entire thing was completely filled. Sloshing water would act as a fluid damper and if anything, it would have the opposite effect. The mass of a surface has to be elastic in order to experience aeroelasticity, so that means the weight needs to be relatively stiff and at least fixed to the surface.

@Skinflaps_Meatslapper I'm on it already. The car has a aerodynamic skid on the bottom of it. I removed the mirrors and taped all the gaps in the body. The car is pretty well sealed from the factory. Something my wife just can't seem to remember. In winter she has to pull on the door pretty hard to get it closed. During summer, if I have any window or the sunroof open even a tiny crack she SLAMS the door soooooo hard.... I had it on the freeway once at sunrise with the whole road to myself coming down out of the hills on I-5 descending down onto the valley floor..... I slowly pushed the pedal down and let the car accelerate all the way to 160 mph before I got nervous. I took my foot off the gas and was amazed at how long the car was taking to slow down. I had turned off the a/c and it was a little warm in the car so I decided to crack open the sunroof and the pressure dropped and my ears felt it instantaneously. And the car started to slow down like I threw an anchor and chain out the back as I lowered both door windows. I have to say though, that car sucks down to the road like crazy at those speeds. I'd like to try a hill climb event. With the handling and the horsepower, climbing a hill would be a great way to race that car.

Jimmy: I would use Kapton tape to seal gaps, its very slippery, comes in the widths you need.

Just as I tip. I do believe, IIRC , that when the F15 did the time/height record, many years ago, it accelerated the climbed, then dived (dove?) to accel, then climbed again etc.

I owned and flew a PA23-160 Apache and setting 2450 RPM was a MISTAKE... He should have been at 2700 RPM and full throttle. The more RPM the more HP the more climb.... Also the Apache holds about 108 Gal of fuel.... How much fuel did he have in it. Solo light fuel the Apache performs well.

If it's possible, you should look into installing spoilers on the on top of the wings of that speedy little plane. They wouldn't have to be very wide and would help slow it down on landings and save brake wear, besides, "What could possibly go wrong?

Hi :) Maybe i´m wrong, but at 13:00 i can see, your aileron is slightly bent... Even better visible, when you move it up and down. It´s not much, but it´s not 100% straight.

Thrust required to go faster is the square of the airspeed increase (2X speed requires 4X moe thrust).

That was a great video. I guess old mags makes the plane slower.

Landing gear in general seems to be Jimmy's achiles heel.

That added weight and complexity and high insurance (consideration for gear up landings) is the reason so many General Aviation aircraft owners stick to fixed gear aircraft. 😙

Dammm Jimmy after listing the aircraft waiting for repair, might be time to find a cheap airport to buy.
