She's not depressed. The whole point of the movie was to show all emotions are complicated and yet important. Sadness can also be nurturing, gentle, motherly, and understanding. It's the same with the dad, anger can be stern, it can be independent and passionate.
Remember what Joy said in the beginning? Anger is in charge of making sure things are fair--as a more mature emotion, Riley's father's Anger needs to be more concerned about what's fair for the family (moving for a job, fitting Riley's punishments to her behaviour, etc) rather than just what's fair for himself.
Yeah, nothing "secret" about the mom or the dad. They clearly explained how all the emotions work and how they eventually work in together. It shows Riley growing her emotions and eventually her emotions come to understand they are not black and white on their roles.
The movie really showed that when sadness took over Riley’s mind, the result was compassion. Her mom is not depressed, just a compassionate woman who is capable of empathy. Her dad is a mix of Anger and Fear - shows his a character of discipline at least that’s his role at the time.
the dads main emotion in charge is anger but the second ones in command are sadness and fear. the mothers main emotions in charge is sadness while the second in charge are joy and anger.
The mom's not depressed. When Riley's console goes grey is a true representation of depression because she can't feel anything. Earlier in the movie Anger was described as really caring about things being fair, meaning the Dad is all about fairness. He's never angry with Riley, he's just firm with a disrespectful daughter, but then goes to comfort her later. While Sadness literally helps Bingbong, meaning the Mom's a good listener, is insightful, and empathetic.
Yeah also welcome to motherhood. We have to be on alert and cautious, caring and careful all the time. We’re always worried about our kids. We have to be like this for self preservation and to keep our families running and safe. Try and find me a mum that doesn’t feel sad at least some of the time.
Not only that but if you’ve watched the movie the balls in the back with the different color emotions are memories. And as anybody can see most of them are purple meaning fear. As a mother you are always scared for your children
What I interpreted is that every emotion can be good or bad, Riley’s was happiness since she thinks positively and looks at the bright side. Her dad’s anger, and I interpreted it as him being confident, direct and able to stand up for himself and others. Her mom’s sadness, and I interpreted it as her being compassionate, understanding and having empathy. In the end, it was sadness what saved Riley in the film, and it snapped her out of her depression.
It’s not that she’s depressed or that he’s angry; but rather that, as we age, our sadness turns into wisdom and anger gives us a strength that nothing else can.

The probable reason why mom's main emotion is sadness is because it's a sort of gentle, nurturing, understandable motherly emotion, sadness doesn't equal depression.
They aren't just one emotion. They represent different things as well, like calmness, empathy, etc. Joy represents optimism. Anger represents bravery or courage, boldness.

I feel like mom has the best Balance of emotions. Sadness is leadingas it is keeping everything in check. Dad has anger which is amplifying his emotions, Riley is joy as it puts everything in turmoil, the eyeshadow girl had fear as leader which was constantly trying to overcorrect everything.
I don't think that's really accurate. I mean the dad's leading emotion does appear to be anger in his head but he never actually displays any signs of anger outwardly at any point in the movie. I think the idea that's actually being shown in the movie is that Riley being a kid, her emotions are more all over the place. We also see this at the end of the movie when we get a glimpse into the boyfriend's head. However the emotions inside the adults minds are working more together as a cohesive unit. I think this means that the father probably had anger management issues as a child but has since learned to regulate that anger with other emotions as an adult which is why he doesn't present as angry even with anger in charge. Notice how all 5 emotions are working together as a unit rather than fighting each other for control. The same can be seen in the mother's mind where sadness is in charge but the other 4 emotions are also working together as a cohesive unit. I think if she was depressed then sadness would be the only emotion in her mind, not just the leading one, showing that she isn't even capable of feeling any other way. Cause that's what depression actually is, your brain only produces those chemicals regardless of outside stimulus so you can't feel anything else. There is also evidence of this in Riley, when Joy and Sadness leave the control room Riley becomes incapable of feeling those emotions.
Couldn't agree more. The movie also gives a taste of what depression really looks like when they put the light bulb to run away in the control pannel and all the controlls stop working. Thats the numbness that's typical in depression.
You all really need to learn that depression isn't sadness and sadness isn't depression. If you ever had that...I'm more than sure you would change your mind.
i dont think the fact that sadness is leading means that shes sad or anything she may have a different perception of sadness that makes her act more calm and rational compared to any other emotion
For the record, as someone with depression I feel other things as well. I'm not some sad robot that the media makes you out to be as someone with depression. Sadness does not equal depression. Depression can be fits of extreme sadness, anger, fatigue, and even apathetic numbness. Depression is so much more than being sad.
To be an empathetic person, you have to recognize other's sadness- however hidden it might be. Being the kind of person who takes care of others means picking up on these things and seeing others' pov. I think the Mom's main emotion being sadness just shows that she's an empathetic person. She's also not afraid to let herself feel sad. There's no way the Mom has depression because Sadness was also working WITH the other emotions as a good team. Depression is NOT just sadness. Period.
@@followerofthechrist7233 In the plot, depression happens when both Sadness and Joy are GONE. Riley returns home because Sadness takes the controls. Riley was numb before. And when she felt sad, it let out all the pain she had been feeling and she realized how sad she would be without her parents. So she went home.
I think the point of the movie is that emotions aren't bad, in any form. Like how Joy was so intent on keeping Riley happy, pretending there isn't anything wrong. But, by doing so, she was denying Riley the chance to heal and move on. Keeping her sadness bottled up was unhealthy, Joy realized at the end that Riley needed to feel sad. She needed to moarn the loss of her old life, let herself cry about losing her friends, old team and childhood home. That way, she can move on from it and make new happy memories. I don't think Riley's mom is necessarily depressed, because sadness isn't always a bad thing. Perhaps she is led more by her nurturing and caring side. She might be more apt to empathy, feeling more easily what others feel. And with the father, he doesn't really show that he has anger issues. Anger isn't always negative either, it's a different intensity to sadness. It's passion, it's justice, it's stubbornness. I think together, they are what Riley needs as role models.

We also see that adults' emotions are actually more in sync with each other. They kinda all behave in a very similar way while still remaining what they are. It's not as fractured nor as exteeme as children's emotions, and we see with Riney that by growing up, her emotions start to understand eachother. Riley's mom may actually not be depressed, more like her first emotional response to the world is a cool down one wich in this film would be translated in a "sad" type of emotion.

Let's not forget that Riley had such a hard time in the movie because Joy wanted to control everything. Nobody is always happy and other can being charged at other times.
I think the reason why sadness effects Riley's emotions so much is because sadness is- the most important emotion someone can feel. Sadness offers you stability, but it reminds people that they're still human bc having empathy, or sympathy, or feeling disappointed, or guilty, or feeling worried, or clueless, just struggling and being able to know you're struggling is the most human thing of all.
Empathy! As a mom, you need to be empathetic; sometimes, that means being sad when other people are sad, even if you have no other reason to be. Empathy is more nuanced--and more mature--than regular sadness.

The entire movie is about how sadness isn't always bad but can also be good, rational etc. Just because sadness is in control doesn't mean she's depressed :')
The lead emotion is not sadness or depression. It's empathy! Mrs. Anderson fully understands what can cause sadness. That allows her to be empathetic and caring.
Idk in the movie we see how it was sadness that was the emotion Riley needed to get off the bus showing that we can’t just live off happiness and in the background of the mom’s mind we can see the memory balls in all different colors. Maybe it’s cuz I’m sad but I don’t see that fact being all bad 💙
They made the mom’s leading emotion sadness because she is an empathetic person and is able to relate to people. In the clip shown you see her try to find out what’s bothering Riley. The dad is protective but also a little bit slow when it comes to picking up subtle emotional hints which is why his is anger. Riley’s is joy because she’s a naturally bubbly person but also still a child with a very naive and immature view of the world.
Probably sadness is leading, is because happyness is usually chaotic and gets out of hand, like anger. Sadness makes you slow down and think things through more carefully while happyness is a little more rushed.
The whole point of the movie is joy learning to accept sadness for being more than just sadness. Mother has mastered Sadness and it's shown to be in control.

True true and true. Women are just more prone to negative emotions. Its in our genes. Why? Because we are dealing with little babies who can hurt themselves all the time plus need to be taken care of for the first year of ther lives. On the other hand man is supposed to be taking care of his family = has to “show teeth” sometimes to protect and provide for his baby and wife. So yeah. He is supposed to be prone to anger and violence. The trick is learning to manage these emotions and actions.

She's not depressed. Sadness is also responsible for regulating empathy and compassion, so being empathetic and all, Riley's Mum's leading emotion is Sadness.
The movie also shows that emotions are complicated. Happiness can be self-centered. Sadness can lead to kindness. And anger can motivate. These things aren't obvious to kids but it's shown that as someone matures, their awareness becomes more complicated. Likely, the emotion in control isn't the one felt the most but the one most relied on the most. The dad is shown to be stressed and upset, but he's also seen happy and patient. As well as moving his family and conducting business calls. Even if temporarily he's likely telluride on the motivation anger gives to get through a very stressful situation. The mom is shown multiple times trying to keep the emotional stability of her family through her empathy.
It’s more that her sadness emotion has matured and now can represent empathy as well, she is sad for others like Riley, not necessarily depressed herself
There's this theory that "maturing" is a concept all emotions go through which shape people into adulthood. Riley still has basic emotions as she is a child and her primary emotion is Joy. Riley's mom's primary emotion is Sadness BUT not because she's depressed, but because her sad emotions matured into "Empathy" which is ideal for a mother. The father has Anger as his primary emotion not because he has anger issues but that it matured into "Determination" and "Protectiveness".
Can we talk about how if you look in the background of the scene in the mom's mind, most of her core memories are purple, indicating most of them are fear-related...
She is not. We might say sadness is just sadness but for her sadness represents empathy. Also later on depression was showed as the controller turned grey. Where you are emotionally numb and can’t feel anything no matter how hard you try to pull any lever or push any buttons. Her mother is nurturing, caring, empathic and just an overall really good mother.
I think her mom has experienced a lot of sadness & it turns her into a calm wise mature woman who understands pain & compassion. That's why sadness is the leader in her mind. Her dad doesn't have anger issues but it seems like something that triggers anger/upset/stress in his mind is the driving force of his behavior & makes him fling into action.
Depression isn't the same as being sad. Sadness isn't even an emotion most people with depression feel. Anger is, though, particularly in men. Honestly, the adults don't have one leading emotion in this film. The larger consoles in adults is there because the emotions don't switch off like with children who are still learning to express and work through their emotions.
@craftysteve176 my depressive episodes are basically the lack of emotion, but not in the way my dissociative episodes are. I have no emotions, but I'm fully present in the world. I have Asperger's, so I rarely experience actually sadness. I don't really know how to react when I'm sad, as it is so foreign to me. I'm a woman, too, btw.
depression isnt the same thing as sadness because depression is an illness/condition and sadness is an emotion. most people with depression experience a lot of sadness. anger problems with depression is most common in people who have bipolar issues. i dont remember if anger is more prominent in men with depression (my last psych class talking about depression was like8-10 months ago)
@@joeyspagnola300 I have BPD and PTSD. I do not have clinical depression. I do, however, experience depression. People without mental illnesses experience depression. Depression is an emotion. Major Depressive Disorder is a mental illness. In order to be diagnosed with MDD, a person must experience persistent depression for at least 6 months. Also, anger is one of the most common ways for depression to manifest. I grew up in the mental health care system since I was 10 or so. I was in the behavioral health care system in general (I have developmental disorders) since I was about 8. I am now 33.
Another key difference with the parents emotional centers is that even though they have their one emotion that is the leader just like Riley, their emotions never fight for dominance or argue with each other. They work together as a team because as adult they are better at regulating their emotions and not allowing them to control their actions.
It's almost as if each individual person has their own unique personalities. Some people are hot-headed, some people are peppy, some gloomy. Don't overthink it because everyone has the capacity to be happy, angry, or sad
Depression and sadness aren’t the same thing. You can be sad or even have depressing moments in life but it doesn’t mean that you actually have depression.
I’ve seen a therapist look at the movie and he said that the mom probably used to be depressed but after the years sadness matured into empathy and the dads anger matured into authority
The dad isn't angry, can't anger also severe as protectiveness,bravery,fight,stand up and etc than just be angry but his anger emotion is more developed and more in control than Riley's anger who is more prone to dumb, problematic and emotional things
I don't think she's depressed, maybe she's just often emotional what doesn't mean that she has depression. Her dad is just often angry and riley is most of the time happy
I think this missed the point of the movie. Sadness did impact Riley, but not in an entirely negative way. Sadness was also associated with empathy. Riley actually went through depression when sadness wasn't allowed to show up and had to be held in. All of the emotions had their place and purpose. Anger was very concerned about what was fair. Riley's dad is likely very justice oriented. The whole point of the movie is that even emotions that can feel unpleasant have their place and exist for a reason and appropriate expression of ALL emotions is part of growing up and dealing with life.
there is a rumor that riley is adopted bc first her eyes are blue and her hair is blonde while her “parents” both have brown eyes and brown hair, and also in the first movie when it shows riley as a baby it shows the parents after, however the mom is not in an hospital bed or laying down but she is standing next to the father.
