Hey, that's me in the thumbnail! Thank you Adam for the feature and your comments! I am using the Robert Van Sice mallets in this performance (graduated set of medium soft, medium, medium, medium hard). I was thinking of going with a softer set all around, but was worried that it would sound too feathery in the upper register, but what you said at 13:33 makes a lot of sense. I'll mess around with softer mallets for next time. The climactic octave section of Simple Song has been haunting me for months - I am very rarely happy with how I manage to play it. I usually keep the tempo more under control, but like many students, the performance nerves lead to me speeding up sometimes. I guess that getting over the nerves just comes with experience. And yes, the marimba is super beat up... My school used to loan it out to a local community orchestra, so it's had it's fair share of rides in the U-Haul.
Haha just saw this! It always makes me happy to see people have fun with my music, and I completely agree with all the things you mentioned in the video. I wrote and recorded this piece back in high school, but I now wonder how differently I would play it if I learned it today as a uni student. Thanks for all the kind words, Adam!
Thank you so much for the feedback and reviewing my video! I totally understand when you said that the piece may need more furiosity or intensity even! I don't think this would have been my first mallet choice, but these mallets were the only ones readily available that day for me :( thank you again for the feedback!
