What you are referring to is tipping and it's absolutely essential when trees are young.

RU-vid video called "How to prune - Canopy management for mango" has a ton of great info for this to improve yield & space trees closer since it keeps them smaller.

@@Gonzalo_M It works but I'd time cuts when growth is vigorous. They take long to recover going into cold weather. Perhaps a Valencia Pride rootstock will be best for this to shorten recovery times if you do this commercially. I have a really short M4 mango tree with a dozen branches already. In India they alternate branch counts so branches break less. So if the first cut gives 4, then the second cut select 3, and the third cut select 4.

@@crackyflipside Interesting! Alternating sound like a good idea too! I'd read from the book "Grow a Little Fruit Tree", that when you prune in summer, it slows down the growth since all the tree hormones are at the tips of the branches. This isn't ideal when you want growth in the first years. Then, when you want to keep the tree at a certain size (or small), you want to specifically prune in summer, so you'll reduce growth and keep it small! It all depends on what you want! Winter pruning is for shaping the tree. And those who are in dormancy (if it's the case depending on climate), will stimulate even more growth in summer. I recommend the book overall! They are more focused on deciduous trees, but the theory is still very relevant.

So basically whenever a branch is forming you want to cut it right around two fist lengths, no more than three. At that point where you cut it, it will start producing more branches, which will multiply the possibilities for mango production. Those new branches we also continue the cutting pattern at 2, no more than 3 fist lengths which keep the tree at a relatively manageable size, but increases the mango production. It’s as if you’re concentrating the plant’s energy towards fruiting conditions rather than producing wood and leaves. Thank you Paul.

I've been using that same technique and it's made my mango 🥭 trees look and grow a lot fuller.

Hello Paul! Nice video!. That is what I did with each of my 14 mango trees. I make the cut after every 8 to 10 inches just a little above the node. After using this technique for four years I have short trees with conplex canopies. More flowers, more fruits! Easy to maintain and easy to spray. ❤ 🥭 ❤

Do you think that you could do the same thing to keep a mango tree indoors?

There are some videos on RU-vid from mango farmers in India and Africa detailing this. Very similar, but they trim the branches to remain equally spaced, so they weight doesn't grow uneven. You can also train the green branches with string, like pulling two branches closer, or using a water bottle to pull branches slightly downward.

Excellent information Paul. Especially for growing in small spaces, yards, in conjunction with many other fruit trees. Pruning is necessary and the way to go.

Thanks Paul, some say cut at 18” as too short branches crowds the tree making the canopy too dense and not enough light coming through. That can lead to increased diseases

We had a similar situation on our daughter's seedling. We used scions from the top branches and grafted them around the main trunk. 2 yrs later still no fruit but we now have a full, symmetrical tree with multiple flushes up top.

Nice ive been doing that for 10 to 13 years on my fltree and its a perfect ball that i keep at 12 ft i probably get more mangos than people with 30 ft trees. I like my trees to be a shell with no holes in it so it can help protect themselves from cold in the winter and help keep the ground cooler in the summer

I usually follow 3 -2 -3- 2 branch pruning for a well balanced tree with lot of flowering and enough space in between beanches

That means prune above a leaf whorl and keep 3 branches, then let them grow 12-18 inches then prune each but keep 2, then 3.

@vballguy1 if 5 pop out, I keep all 5. With time, dominant branches will prevail

@vballguy1 more leaves 🍃 means more energy is being transformed for the tree's use. Gary Zill says sunlight is a mango tree's food.

Gray information Paul. Thank you. Can this method be done with Papaya, Jamaican Ackee and Breadfruit too? I will need to keep my trees to 10 ft tall as 4ft step ladder can be used to prune, harvest and spray. Keep up the good work buddy. 👊🏾🙏🏾

whats the white rock you putting next to your house? this to stop roots from growing to your house foundation? I dont have much room at my house, I was thinking I need to do a root barrier, any suggestion of what I can do? or how far down I need to dig next to my foundation, and what to put there to block the roots?, you have video on that?

My dad yells at me for how much I trim my fruit trees. More branches means more flowers and potentially more fruit. I trim the trees at around 2 ft for the first time. I normally let a couple branches grow out as I trim down the branches I want to keep. Then when those get bigger I cut out the ones I let grow.

I would leave the Kerry , you more than likely will want it in the future and there is no reason to work yourself to death continually changing the variety. What do you feed your small seedling miracle fruit trees in pots? Thanks Paul that was a good lesson.

not to change the subject on mangos, but you do the same cuttings on an avocado tree ?? would like a response , please..I have a very small space and growing mostly potted, but have some in the ground..need the space, so cutting is very important for myself as well as others with small spaces... thank you

I learned that mangoes grow at the ends of branches. I never knew this. Your children might like Kerry, so why not keep it. What kind of paint? I just watched the video about how UVC rays are making it to the surface of the Earth even though the industry denies it set the trees are being burned mostly on the south facing side. It's really sad what man has been doing to the planet.
