I would like to add that many former AKG people work at Austrian Audio now. They (mostly) produce in Vienna again, in contrast to AKG who went to low-wage countries. You can tell there is a lot of experience and know-how
This afternoon I said, “I am going to watch some old Booth Junkie videos.” I do a search, and two years later you are still here killing it with awesome content! This is a great review! So many new mics are out there. I am still standing in my closet using my old CAD E-100 and a Zoom H5. Don’t laugh, it works very well and that is still my best Booth Junkie advice when asked what to buy when starting out. Thanks Sir, for what you have done for me.
I liked the way you put the word "subscribe" on the side of the mic in the first view. Almost subliminal! I can't answer for the "gap," but I can answer about a "second order" filter. A second-order filter is one that uses two elements, usually a capacitor and an inductor (unless it's an active filter, which likely uses two capacitors), and it changes the frequency response at a rate of 12 dB per octave. The pointed pop filter is not new. Look inside certain 1960's EV mics and you'll find something very similar.
All your work is terrific - but wow I loved this review. I have all the mics I need, but sometimes you wanna see a great review. You and Bandrew are my favorites and your tribute was touching. This review works for microphone junkies as well as good information for those just getting going. Well conceived and perfectly executed. All the way down to using a mechanical pencil to flip the switch :) Seriously authentic I love it
I had a mic for high ambient noise about 30 years ago. It had two dynamic elements with the polarity flipped on one. It didn’t matter which element you talked Into as long as you directed your voice into one of them. It actually did a decent job at reducing background noice.
Thanks for your extensive test. This mic has a nice sound to it, but the handling noise rejection is not up to what you'd expect from what is essentially a handheld mic. The Shure Beta 87A sounds nice too and does really do a much better job in relation to rejecting handling noise.
Sheesh, that handling noise is a dealbreaker for a vocal mic! Hey, Mike, any plans to review the OC16 recently released? I was leaning toward the Lewitt 440 Pure but I am waiting for a review of the Austrian Audio mic. There isn’t a single review as of yet. Thanks! Always great. Not only your voice but your mannerisms and gestures - compelling.
love your vids. would be interesting to hear the handling noise of the other mics as well because most companies claim to eliminate handling noise as well. Would be an interesting comparison. Keep on the good work
Second-order means 12 db per octave. That mic sounds great as a stationary mic. Great review Mike, thanks! This reminds me of my KSM 32. It does need a shock mount if used on a boom, and forget about using it on stage. However, if you are doing a podcast and like the proximity effect. I think the hyper-cardoid pattern would allow it to work well in a less than perfectly treated room.
They do mean rotated 180 degrees. This technique was made famous by HEIL audio with their PR (polarity reversed) line which includes the dearly loved PR40 broadcast mic and the PR22 vocal mic since it also helps with general background rejection.
i think the details are great. the lower frequencies are great as well, but the proximity effect is a bit too much for me, but that is easy to filter out. but what i really like is, that the esses are not too sharp. that means, that it is not fatiguing listen to it for longer while having good clarity in the mid section. i think it is a good mic and has a great value for the money.
Sounds great, but the handling noise is terrible, how are you gonna sing with it live? Can´t imagine even using it as streamer, which I was looking into use this mic for streaming, buying a shockmout for a mic which should already have build in shockmount is shame
Very nice sounding mic at the price point. It won't be replacing my OC18 or SM7B, but if I needed another mic for a podcast around a table with my SM7B I might consider it.
I took a Beta 58A and the AA 505 to the rehearsal room couple of weeks ago. I wanted to have a better clear-sounding mic for the rehearsal room ( I use a Beta 87A wireless for live shows) and the minute I sung on the AA I loved it. I hear all so clear and loud. My feeling was like the mic has a buil-in compressor on it. I could hear all my register cristar clear, loud and precise. Specially the low range I felt I had no need to push my vocal folds because it was all very present. For my surprise, the band didn't like it. All of them said "NO", take the Beta 58A. THey said (and that might be interesting for possible buyers looking for feedback about this product), that it sounded too "rough", too not-nice and harsh. That allthough yes, it was louder as hell with not a single feedback problem in the room and they all could hear me loud and clear even when the band was playing louder than usual for testing the mics, eventhough they all agreed taht it was a good thing, theyy all said, the BEta 58A was warmer, "rounded", "balanced" and nicer. I still wanted to get the AA 505 (and might get it for other acoustic band project I have) but for my electric band, they said, they were not sure the crowd would take it for a long period of time, the harshness and the very strong "pps" and "ssss" sound which was not present in the Beta 58A. And of course, there was the final point. the handling noise... way too much. In the electric band I sing jumping everywhere on stage. In the Acoustic band, I play guitar and I'm fixed in front of the mic. So that might maybe be a field for it.
@@zikamusic2364 Hi. Resuming my prior answer I would say, IF you have the microphone in the mic stand most of the live show, like if you are a guitar player or something like that, try the Austrian Audio. It is powerful and pristin specially in the higher frequencies. If you are a lead vocalist using most of the time the mic in your hand, go for the Beta 58.
Earthworks is just next level! The comparison does showcase the coloration referenced. I’m listening through HD58X. Bluetooth just wasn’t capturing the subtle nuances.
I wish it sounded as good as it looked. Mic seems to have the characteristics of a condenser rather than a dynamic mic. Thanks for your great review. Fantastic channel!
Hi Mike, a nice review again; thank you. The internal circuitry (i.e. a low noise amplifier) adds some gain just like a mic activator would do -- in other words, it increases the sensitivity of the mic which tells us how much Volts are outputted at a sound pressure of 1 Pa. As to the handling noise, I do agree with that comment which suggests that this particular mic specimen must be defective with such a horrible handling noise when it is advertised as being good at handling noise rejection due to its innovative polarity flipped second capsule.
Active dynamics are starting to make their presence known. One wonders where it will end up. 25% of dynamics on the market? Whilst cloudlifters and the like exist you have the variety to boost passive dynamics. This is certainly more cost effective. But somewhere in the mix will be a happy medium. A great review. Thanks Mike.
2nd order is 40dB/decade or 12dB/octave by definition. The order is equal to the number of poles in the function describing the relation between input and output.
Oh man, the low-end of that OD505 is smootheroni AF, love it. Honestly in my opinion, the only mics that sounded better is LS208 and on par with SR314. AA did a superb bang for a buck here!
This is tangential but back in the "Wall Of Sound" days, the Grateful Dead would mic each singer with two condenser microphones that were out of phase by 180 degrees with one being used to cancel the crowd noise out of the vocal side. This microphone sounds.....well, I hear you.
I have a pair of OC18s and they are EXCELLENT mics. I would not trade them for the world. This handheld, sadly, is nowhere near as impressive. The tone is nice, but the handling noise is RIDICULOUSLY loud. I have owned $30 mics with less handling noise. Hopefully they can make some change and improve things. Maybe this is just a faulty one.
Hi Sir, Just want to ask is there any sounds difference about od 303 and od 505? Coz im planning to have one and i want to used it at Live band. Pls give me and advice.Thank you
@@gabejohnston1556 I could see that I suppose. I think I’ve been looking for something that cuts through clearly and the earthworks have sounded that way to me. I could do with a new set of monitors though. The research never ends 😂
I was really hyped for the 505, but.. damn this might be the first dud from AA. That handling noise is just awful, and the tone is strange, but I feel it could help my downright awful voice. Unfortunately it's $299 here..and the Procaster is $189.
I recently got myself a Rode Nt1a. So far pretty happy with it. In the instructions it says, that when not used, it should be put into a cover to prevent dust from getting in and to keep it somewhat dry. Is it really that important to cover up a mic when you're not using it?
Absolutely! Dust will slowly collect on the elements and change the sound over time. It's a bit annoying at first, but you get used to it. It's a useful habit to build early on as later you will most likely invest in more expensive microphones and at that point you want to really take care of them.
I’m looking for a dynamic mic to use at my desk rather than my booth. With the increased sensitivity of this mic, do you think it would be less suitable for an untreated space than an SN7b or RE20 for example?
Some of the worst handling noise I've ever heard. The reversed Phase capsule is just to create the Super Cardioid pattern. It's also why there are vents on any Cardioid or Super Cardioid mic, sound hitting the back of a single capsule is affectively the same as hitting a second capsule. It's how a lot of Large diaphragm condensers work too, a second diaphragm in the back that when mixed with the front create multiple polar patterns. Interesting mic. Passive Dynamic seems to be becoming a thing. It's been popping up in Ribbons for a few years and now in some broadcast types. saves you buying a Cloud lifter I guess.
I wonder if using the capsule version of this microphone (OD505 WL1) for the Shure Wireless units, helps reducing the immense handling noise of the wired version. Anyone have had tried this?
I bought that Austrian Audio in 2022 with great expectations but only got a disappointment. Almost never used in any situation, live or whatever else, the problem is that it's not particularly outstanding about anything and also lacks of a special personality. I haven't sold it yet only because probably in the future it will be regarded as a "pet shop curio" for its unique visual design and will become valuable (also because very few people bought it).
i need a 60$ mic for content creating and i have no clue what to get, could anyone help im just confused tbh there are so many options from like 10 years old like a Samson Meteor Mic and there are new stuff like a razer seiren mini and i have no idea what to get
Great review - the mic doesn't sound bad, but I could never buy it based on their marketing claims being borderline outright lies. 'Practically immune to handling noise', my ass. And the proximity effect is so aggressive it sounds like it started clipping on you when you got close. And it doesn't seem like that integrated pop filter really does anything. So it sounds alright, but hard pass thanks to their product marketing...
I agree about the proximity effect- would have liked to hear more of him working farther away. Also could try working a little off axis. On the other hand, it might be effective on a thin voice.
that Austrian Audio mic was so muddy and closed, liveless, sometime tubby, no detail. terrible handling noise. didn't stack up from the others. even that movo one sounded better.
Gosh, it sucks that RU-vid disabled the dislikes. I'd push it because this thing does not handle handling noises at all. Great review though! As usual 🙂
Like and dislike buttons are about the video, not about the product. If you think the review is good because it is fair and shows both weaknesses and strength of the product, helping you to decide whether or not it is for you, then the like button should be pressed. IMHO
Could always use the chrome extension to show the dislikes again so you can dislike the video lol. EDIT: It's called return youtube dislike if you're interested.
